1990s Jolly Roger Coin Operated Aeroplane Kiddie Ride - Edd the Duck (800 Subscriber Special!) The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-08-12 | Manufactured by Jolly Roger Amusement Rides, Edd the Duck was their very first character ride, released in late 1991 or early 1992. Only twenty five were made, operated at Children's World stores across the UK on a profit share basis between Jolly Roger and Children's World's charity.The ride features Edd dressed as a pilot, seemingly based on this clip of Edd at London City Airport which aired on BBC around 1991. youtube.com/watch?v=eBSXoqVcC34 When the rides were removed from Children's World, the Edd figures were scrapped and the planes repurposed as ordinary bi-plane rides.However, this one example somehow survived, having been either sold or donated to the Caernarfon Airworld Aviation Museum. It was sited in their gift shop until last summer when I noticed it up for sale on Facebook Marketplace and immediately recognised the ride I had once thought scrapped out of existence. 1980s RG Mitchell Coin Operated Skunk Kiddie Ride The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-26 | Filmed at The Arkade, Minehead on September 23rd 2020.I was absolutely thrilled to find this rare ride, although its history is a little unclear. As far as I am aware, MK Chester Engineering released "Sammy" the Skunk in 1973, although I believe the fibreglass skunks themselves were manufactured for MKC by Modern Products. However, the skunk seen here has obviously been manufactured (or refurbished?) by RG Mitchell, probably in the late 80s or early 90s. While the base looks remarkably like those used on Diamond Electronics' rides, I understand that was manufactured by Fibrecast...whose rides were sold by Eddie Brookes...who was later bought out by BAFCO...hence the footplates being identical to those used on BAFCO's Futuristic Rides. Confused yet? I certainly am!I believe RG Mitchell took over both MK Chester Engineering and the sales division of Eddie Brooke's company in the 1980s, which could explain how they had both the mould for the skunk and spare parts from Fibrecast. There is also a very rare "RG Mitchell" cow which was sold on the same base and had originally been part of Mike Chester's range under the name of Daisy.So, to cut a long story short, this ride is basically a Mike Chester/Modern Products/Fibrecast/RG Mitchell hybrid! 1980s Whittaker Brothers Coin Operated Dragon Kiddie Ride - Puff the Magic Dragon The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-22 | Filmed at Let's Go, Barnstaple on September 22nd 2020.Originally released as a red dragon specifically for the Welsh market in the late 1980s, this dragon was made by Whittaker Brothers. The dragon was recoloured in green with a red cape (decorated with yellow flowers) in the early '90s and quickly became one of Whittakers' most popular rides. There was also a far rarer blue version of this dragon made in the mid-1990s.I have very fond childhood memories of two of these on Brighton's Palace Pier in the mid-1990s, so seeing Puff always brings back a wave of nostalgia. 1970s Edward Savill Coin Operated Deer Kiddie Ride - Bambi The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-18 | This deer was originally manufactured by Edwin Hall of Streatham, and released in 1965.Edward Savill, Hall's distributor, also based in Streatham, later used an updated version of the mould for his Bambi ride in 1978, as seen in this video. The Edward Savill Bambi was apparently made in both single and twin versions. 1960s RG Mitchell Coin Operated Giraffe Kiddie Ride - Jerry The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-15 | Filmed at Folly Farm Adventure Park, Kilgetty on June 5th 2019.This giraffe was named Jerry and made by RG Mitchell. Several versions of Jerry were made over the years, starting with a wooden model released in 1960. The fibreglass versions began to replace their wooden predecessors in the mid-60s and, as far as I know, this was the original mould used. There are two fibreglass variations which made appearances on and off throughout the years but this one was by far the most popular and would also be the last version of Jerry produced. It's hard to know when particular units were made as I now understand the rides were often used as part of Mitchell's own operation, then brought back to the factory, refurbished and resprayed and sold as new. This particular model was probably sold in the early 2000s.Jerry is a ride who is very close to my heart, being the very first ride my mum ever photographed me riding back in 1993. 1960s RG Mitchell Coin Operated Deer Kiddie Ride - Danny Deer The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-14 | Following on from a wooden version released at the Amusement Trade Exhibition in January 1963, RG Mitchell recreated Danny Deer in fibreglass form in the mid-1960s. The fibreglass Danny was larger than his wooden predecessor. His design was changed several times over the years, with at least two different moulds used and many different paintwork variations.This is the rarer version of Danny Deer. I have only ever seen three of these, including the one in the video. 1990s RG Mitchell Coin Operated Steam Engine Kiddie Ride - Thomas the Tank Engine The History of Coin Operated Rides 2024-06-13 | Filmed at Merrivale Model Village, Great Yarmouth on June 22nd 2023.RG Mitchell released the first Thomas the Tank Engine ride in 1994. It was a relatively large two-seater ride which moved gently backwards and forwards while playing the Thomas theme tune. Interactive features included a display screen to make you feel as though you were really rolling along the railway tracks, and four push buttons for sound effects taken from the TV series.This was a very popular ride with arcades and shopping centres alike as you might imagine of a ride based on such a popular children's character.
