Most of my scores up until now have been for very "big" stories using epic characters from Chinese mythology, and it was a challenge to tell a story that was "small" and focussed on mostly monologues and introspection.
For inspiration, I listened heavily to the music of Jóhann Jóhannsson (The Theory of Everything, Siccario) whose style has always spoken to me about the human experience. Like him, I chose to make this music with all real players - a live string quartet and a couple outstanding vocalists - accompanied by all real analog synths to give a warm, expressive human feel to these long, minimal soundscapes.
Jóhann Jóhannsson died the day we mixed this. The title of the film then took on on a new meaning for me, since the film music world will always be missing a unique, irreplaceable voice without him.

Virtus Vitae is a CINE Golden Eagle winning short animated film by Laszlo L. Ujvari, which was the focus of the CINE 2013 Film Scoring Competition - All entrants re-scored this film, and Seth Tsui and Ken Pierson became the winners of the competition.
After the competition, DePauw University commissioned Seth Tsui to notate his winning film score for live orchestra, and return to DePauw on November 3rd, 2013 to attend the premier.
Big thanks to all the DePauw University Orchestra members for their masterful playing, soloists Emily Barnash (voice) and Lizzy Wen (piano), Laszlo J Ujvari for his incredible film, Dr. Eric Edberg for the wonderful interview, and Dr. Orcenith Smith for his impeccable conducting and making the whole thing happen.

First place winner of CINE's inaugural film scoring competition!
Seth Tsui re-scored this excellent short animated film in early 2013 for a scoring competition; all the music is original and created from beginning to end in Pro-Tools.
Nichole Dechaine was the soprano voice soloist (and she did a beautiful job).
Here are the Italian lyrics, with English translation, that Seth wrote for the aria in the film: Se il pianoforte vive Mi sveglierò dal mio sonno e canteremo insieme tra rovine di questo luogo
If the piano lives I will wake from my sleep and we will sing together in the ruins of this place
The rest of the score came together in the following ways: All the brass are real, played by Seth (tenor, alto and bass trombone played and manipulated in creative ways for a full brass section sound) Most of the violins are real, played by Seth (layered 11 to 33 times for a full section sound) The rest of the instruments were created with EastWest Complete Composer's Collection (the piano is sampled from an exceptional Bösendorfer concert grand) Synths and additional Foley created in Reason, Absynth, and Xpand. For the score, I wanted to create a piece of music that really defines the building in the film as an opera house, and brings to life the implied character of the woman seen in the painting at 0:33 and 3:03. I figured the best way to do this was to have her voice coming out of the phonograph that the robot starts at 1:30 (made it sound "vintage" by recording her voice with a Placid Audio Copperphone) and gradually blending that with audio from the clean-sounding vocal mic to convey what her voice was like coming out of the character's memory.Using WiiMotes as MIDI ControllersSeth Tsui2010-07-10 | For Aaron, because he requested it!
This is day 2 of testing WiiMotes to work with various software synths. Right now I'm using them to control the Mastrom synth and ReDrum drum machine in Reason.
Please note, I put this together for sake of demonstration, not as a piece meant to have musical integrity.
Everything is controlled live, via the Wiimotes. The only thing pre-programmed is the drum beat pattern, but even that is triggered on/off via the B button on the white Wiimote,
The patches are very simple - The motion controls on the black Wiimote control a notch EQ to sweep up and down and process the output of the Malstrom synth (for those of you who use Reason, you'll probably instantly recognize the stock Amp Sweep patch on the Malstrom synth). The motion controls on the white Wiimote do the same thing except for the output of the drum machine. All the notes are keyed via the wiimote buttons, and I'm still working out the most ergonomic way to cram a workable keyboard onto the 11 buttons of the wiimote.
It's all done using a very user friendly piece of software I got for $19 called OSCulator (yay, I don't have to program my own MAX/MSP patch this time!)Seth Tsui Trombone Foo Fighters AuditionSeth Tsui2008-01-19 | This is my submission for the Foo Fighters' "My Grammy Moment" competition.
I'm doing this because it seems like a great opportunity to further my goal of closing the gap between classical and rock music. Listen to more of my work at www.myspace.com/sethtsui
Note: I don't have the copyright to the 8 bar tune that I play at the beginning, so I can't upload that (but you can find it on the leadsheet they had for download while the contest was running, or just figure it out. It's not that hard.)
