How to make emergency survival biscuits (Hardtack) IslanderHero 2016-04-09 | If you have flour and water, you can make hardtack, a biscuit that will stand the test of time with proper storage. This extremely cheap and easy-to-make survival food was rationed out to soldiers and sailors throughout history. Union soldiers in the Civil War received nine to ten of these biscuits daily, and one soldier's memoir in particular (John Billings), documents a hilarious view that he, and most soldiers, had of this bland cracker back in the day.According to Wikipedia, one museum purportedly contains a biscuit from 1852 that amazingly still appears to be edible.A 50gram biscuit will contain just a little over 180 calories, 38 grams carbs, 2 grams fiber and 7 grams of protein. It is not the most nutritious thing, but it will keep you going until you can find the next steak and salad. There are variations of the recipe, and in mine, I leave it out salt. You can certainly tweak things around by adding sugar and other ingredients to boost flavor and vitamins, however you do so at the expense of longevity. If you have no intentions of storing this for long periods of time, then by all means, have at it! Review: Esbit 5-piece cooking set IslanderHero 2016-03-14 | Esbit 5-piece cooking setamzn.to/2NEfb2cGreetings! I review the Esbit 5-piece aluminum cook set and point out its features as well as give a quick demonstration of the wonderful art of boiling water and cooking eggs with this system. You can find this on Amazon.com for around $44 currently (Jan 2016). Personally, I like the convenient nature of this stove and you get quite a bit for under $50. In the package, you get a large pot that holds 33 ounces, small pot that holds 16 ounces, stove base, solid fuel stand, brass alcohol burner and a mesh carry bag. As far as cons, I'm not a fan of the solid fuel tablets and this stove is easily affected to wind, much more so than something like the Solo Stove. In addition, it is made of aluminum and some of you may have concerns with that.Despite the cons, I think having this in your camping/hiking arsenal can do you no harm. I show you some of the powder and bullet-seating combinations that I used along the way. Eventually I find a magic combination that surprised the heck out of me. In all honesty, this was something I did out of sheer curiosity because this is my hunting rifle and I have no intentions of turning it into a target gun. Still, I had a ton of fun and learned a lot during the process. The Remington 783 is chambered in a number of cartridges, however I'm using the tried and true versatile 308 Winchester. Cold Steel Torpedo - Hits like a sledgehammer! IslanderHero 2016-02-15 | Cold Steel Torpedo:amzn.to/2Zxq6x9The Cold Steel Torpedo is an interesting weapon. Can't say I've ever seen anything like it. It weighs 2 lbs, is 15" long, made of 1055 cold rolled carbon steel and pointed on both ends. You can stab with it, bludgeon with it or chuck it at zombies or, as shown in the video, wood boards or old computers.The Cold Steel website states that you can use this to hunt animals up to the size of a Coyote. Although this is a deadly weapon and the sheer force of it hitting most small animals is enough to kill, unless you are accurate with this, I would look at other methods to dispatch game.As a self defense weapon, again, because of its size and pointed tips, it will go through layers of clothing easily and will most definitely crack bones and skulls. As a stress-relieving toy, it is freaking excellent!
