Shooting Football 4K Video with Sony a1 & Sony 400GM, and the still frame grabs that are possible PM-R TV 2022-09-13 | This is my second game of the season trying to figure out how to make 4K video of American football and then seeing how good I can get still frame grabs from that footage after the fact. In my first video, I tried using back button focus but the camera always forces you into AF-S when you do that, so this game, I let the camera AF using Zone focus. Neither is the correct solution. At the end of the video clips, I put some un-cropped still frame grabs that I only adjusted exposure on--so no topaz or other sharpening post. The results are pretty stunning. If I could figure out how to get the same AF tracking that I get on the a1 for stills to work for video, I think I'd stop shooting stills altogether. It's really something to say!!! I'd like to hear your comments, suggestions, and questions in the comments below, so please, let's figure this out together. One thing is for certain, touch AF does NOT work for the 400GM and 600GM on a monopod of moving action. There is no way that is going to work. I'm hungry to find a solution!

Fred (Fritz) Schmidbauer talks about being in the Pacific During WWII. He died today at 2pm EST. PM-R TV 2023-04-28 | My Father-inLaw Fritz died today from complications from a heart attack he suffered early this morning. He died at the age of 98 years and three months old, and just a few weeks shy of his 76th wedding anniversary. He was surrounded by family and lived a most honorable and simple life. Track Sports Photography Workshop with Former Sports Illustrated Photographer PM-R April 14-16, 2023 PM-R TV 2023-03-17 | The site of the workshop is at Maryville College's brand new Austin Coleman Piper Memorial Track, which will be used for the first time for the meet on April 15th. The MC Scots retired their track and field sport back in 1983 and after forty years, our workshop will capture the entire historic day when the sport returns to campus. The best images that chosen (selects) from everything we shoot on Saturday will be given to Maryville College, both the their archive to document the day for history, and also to Sports Information and the team to promote and support the sport. Participants will still hold the copyright for their images but must agree to share their use with MC in perpetuity. Our workshop will have two distinct parts: shooting all day on April 15th, and editing all day on April 16th. Maryville College is providing us with a secure classroom on campus near the track with WiFi.The instructor for the weekend is Patrick Murphy-Racey, a Sony Artisan of Imagery, and former Sports Illustrated Photographer. Sony FE20-70mm f/4G lens Review by Sony Artisan Patrick Murphy-Racey PM-R TV 2023-01-17 | The New Sony FE20-70mm f/4G lens is a focal range never seen before by any company. Sony says it's a "new standard zoom that covers the ultra-wide range." It weighs slightly over one pound, is just 4” long, and costs $1099. That it has a filter size of only 72mm instead of 77mm is amazing. It is a sealed lens against dust and moisture and has the same dual XD Linear AF motors found in the 50mm f/1.2GM, 70-200mm f/2.8GMII, 400GM and 600GM lenses. While only a 4mm difference, at 20mm, it offers 10 more degrees in terms of field of view than a 24mm lens. Sony a7RV Menu Settings for Shooting Sports with Tracking On 4K 60P 4:2:2 PM-R TV 2023-01-01 | This video explains how I set the menus up on the new Sony a7RV camera to capture 10 bit (4:2:2) video at 60P. It also explains how to task the AF-On button to make it become the "tracking on" button instead. This allows the Sony a7RV to utilize its new AI AF technology as well as giving shooters a new way to use tracking AF in video without using the touch screen to achieve focus. Instead, you can just look through the EVF (viewfinder) and target your subject by putting the center "tracking on" symbol over the subject you choose. Then you push and hold the #2 button (AF-ON) and the camera will track that subject until it leaves the viewfinder, leaving you to compose on the fly and watch plays develop. Shooting Video at a Bowl Game with Sony A7RV and 400mm f/2.8GM at 60P: Tracking On by pm-r :) PM-R TV 2022-12-31 | You know the only thing better than shooting at 30 fps with the Sony a1? Shooting 60FPS with the Sony a7RV!!! I truly believe that within the next three years more than 50% of us will be shooting sports this way. The only question I have is whether or not we will even pull stills out of the video in the future. The new "tracking on" feature exclusively in the a7RV is amazing as you get to apply all the new AI function + tracking AF without the need of touch focus on the back screen. The only drawback I see is that the rolling shutter on this camera is noticeable with the quick pans needed to capture both the release as well as the catch. I was shooting the game at 1/640th f/2.8 at 2000 ISO with the 1.4 on and 1000 ISO with it off. MotoPat Episode 7: Day 3, Chambers to Morenci, AZ on US 191 by Patrick Murphy-Racey PM-R TV 2022-12-10 | MotoPat Episode 7, Day 3 Chambers AZ to Gilbert, AZIt’s always the case that great motorcycle rides have a beginning, a middle, and somewhere in the middle part is the Best part of the ride, and then it inevitably ends. As I began day 3’s ride leaving Chambers AZ—I had to go a little East on I40 to reconnect with the 191 headed south from the town of Sanders AZ. To be honest, heading South from Sanders is pretty,… but not breathtaking. It’s mostly scrub in the high desert and that section of the road is 95% straight with occasional little canyons you get to dive down into and ride out of again. It’s peaceful, pretty, and the miles go by quickly. The 75 miles between Sanders and Springerville goes by in just a little over an hour.But then things change about 5 miles South of of the 60 and things get a whole lot more interesting. Now I have ridden in all 50 states, I’ve been to Prudhoe Bay some 250 miles North of the Arctic Circle and across Labrador to Happy Valley Goose bay on the other end of this continent too. Now, I’m trying not to build this up too much for you but the next 117 miles are in my top 5 rides — ever…. This was my third time through here in two years and I can’t wait to get back there again. The part I want you to concentrate on is the 117 miles part of this deal.This is not like running down 129 to Deals’s gap on the Dragon where you grab an adult beverage and turn around and go back the other way. This is hours of fun containing more twisty’s than I bet anyone has ever actually counted. When you finish this video, fire up google maps and plug in Springerville to Morenci and then start zooming in on the route. As you enlarge the map you will see what I’m talking about. This section of 191 is Called the Coronado Trail, named for Francisco Vasquez de Coronado who walked up here from Mexico in 1540. Coronado Trail commemorate his exploration, though as with the national memorial there is no visible trace of the expedition. US 191, is a showcase for the varied and spectacular scenery of eastern Arizona, from the Sonoran Desert grasslands and valleys of the southeast corner, across the steep and heavily wooded White Mountains, down into the more barren lava fields and red plains of the Petrified Forest region and finally into the sandy expanses of the Navajo Indian Reservation.So, You are zooming up and down in elevation, diving right, then left into long and short sweepers, following the contour of the mountains. It’s exilerating and more fun than I’ve had in a long time. It’s tough to describe the constant high you get running these ridges up and down and all around. Sometimes you are riding the wrong way as you can see the road that you were just on in a series of hairpins that drop you down faster than an elevator.I can honestly say that all the miles I logged in Utah were great, but I knew I was headed for this section and the wait was all worth it.The section between Chase Creek and Blue Vista is the most spectacular. The video doesn’t show you how gorgeous this section is.But the best part of this whole ride? Is that there are almost no vehicles on the road. There is no real population anywhere near this section of 191 so you are pretty much by yourself out there gassing up and down the mountains and having a big time. You use every throttle position, every gear, and your butt never gets tired or sore as you never stay in the same part of the seat for more than a few seconds.Then all of a sudden the landscape changes abruptly and you enter a vast mining area and the twisty are done. The Morenci Mine just goes on and on and you are struck by just how much rock has been moved around for so long. In the town of Safford, AZ, I take one last look at 191 and turn West on 70 towards Globe and eventually to Gilbert where my bike will once again be parked in my sister-in-law’s garage. This is the re-entry part of the ride that slowly introduces me to small towns, convenience stores, restaurants. As the population increases, so Dows traffic. I love the town of Glob eand often choose side streets to cruise the little town a different way each time I ride through. As you leave Globe, you pick up the 60 again and head into the grater phoenix area and back into the heat and traffic jam. Red-light multiply each mile so when you finally get back to civilization, you can barely move. Re-entry sucks as it means the ride is over and a plane awaits to take me back home and away from the bike that goes into storage until next time when I can visit again and continue my explorations of the west.Thanks for watching. It is one of the most beautiful routes on any three digit US highway in the entire USA. The scenery, beauty, and grandeur are hard to beat. Come join me as I ride from Moab, UT to Chambers, AZ as I ride from Utah to Arizona on one of the country's loneliest highways. Riding out West is a form of mental health for me so I bought another bike that I move around to different areas out there. I use the discount airlines like Allegiant and Frontier to fly and ride, getting on the plane with only a small backpack. Everything else I needed is already in the bike, waiting for me to arrive.

MotoPat DAY 1 - Episode 5- Motorcycle Ride on US50 from Colorado Springs to Moab, Utah October 2022 PM-R TV 2022-11-27 | Getting off the beaten path is what these rides are all about. It’s like taking great big breaths full of America and the parts almost no one sees anymore. Like most of you, I spend most of my life looking through the bars of my many appointments of ,my google calendar. These rides for me are where I get to be completely free of stress, schedules, worry, and reservations. I just ride and see how far I can get and what I can see each day. This day was a great one, with perfect weather and I never sweat once all day. The bike was flawless and ride was perfect. We’ll talk to you again tomorrow :)US hwy 50 was created in 1926. It runs from Sacramento, CA to Ocean city MD and is 3,073 miles in total length. The route runs through mostly rural desert and mountains in the western United States. Heading from West to East, US 50 leaves I-70 upon entering Colorado and heads southeast through Grand Junction and into the southern part of Colorado. Once there, the road climbs to its highest elevation of 11,312 feet (3,448 m)[4] over the Rocky Mountains and over Monarch Pass where it crosses the Continental Divide. After descending from the Rockies, US 50 passes by Royal Gorge near Cañon City and serves Pueblo where it crosses over I-25. The route then joins U.S. Route 400 in Granada and follows the Arkansas River all the way into into Kansas.The first time I can remember riding on us hwy 50 in CO was back in 2007 when I did my first trip to Alaska. I returned from the wooly North pretty busted up, sore, and in some pain after riding some 10,000 miles in just 21 days to that point. I rested up for a day in Colorado Springs with my Uncle Ed Murphy, and then rode down to Pueblo and hung a left on 50. I followed it all the way to St. Louis and decided the next day just to bust it home on the super slab because of how tired and sore I was.I traversed US hwy 50 four times in 2022, which is a record for me. I love 50 as it meanders through Colorado. It is absolutely beautiful, barren, with great rises and drops in elevation. There are plenty of curves to keep you busy and many signs of when the road was new. There are old picnic table rest stops along the way where you could take out a lunch and take a break from driving across country. The towns are sometimes really far away from each other and so I had to keep an eye on my fuel level on the new bike as it holds 2.7 gallons less than my BMW back in TN. When I left COS, I headed South on South Nevada Avenue which eventually turns into CO 115 South. Just past the town of Penrose, named for Spencer Penrose, I got onto 50 headed West. Once headed West, and after you pass through Canon city, you get a nice section that allows you to lean over pretty well for about 35 miles into Coaldale where 50 slides into a long canyon in between the mountains headed for Salida. You pass over 285 in Poncha Springs, and now your are lined up for the big pass at Monarch. Now, mountain passes with such high elevations, tight curves, and switchbacks are a nightmare for truck drivers who have to struggle up at low speeds and then engine brake down, sometimes only making 15 mph. Flatlander in cars often overheat their brakes, not knowing how to downshift. On a big 1200cc motorcycle with ABS brakes and good rubber, these passes are more fun than than a house on fire. Monarch is an amazing ride but you have to be ready for anything as people lose their brakes there all the time and there are always people pulled off the road just past where they overheated.After you come off the literal "high" of Monarch Pass you descend into another twisty section as you head to Sergeants where things settle down again and it’s just gorgeous till you pass through Gunnison and Montrose. Montrose to Delta is a long stretch of farming communities and there are lots of places to fuel up and eat. Once through Delta though, you are in a long high desert section that is mostly straight and boring. On I-70, the speed limit through there is 85, you can run 90 without fear of getting pulled over but it sure eats up your fuel economy. The Supertenere with me on it and all my crap gets about 55 mpg off road and running 45-50 mph. At 75 mph, mpg’s drop to 47. At 90 mph, you are getting in the mid-20’s but it’s fun after going mostly slow all day and we don’t have any 85 mph speed limits in Tennessee where I live—so you do the thing…. I ran I-70 all the way into Utah where it passes US191, which was my goal for the day and pretty much for the rest of the trip. I shot some gorgeous drone footage along us50 as it ran next to the AR river and even more footage around Moab and in AZ but I flew the damn thing into a perfectly good tree in AZ and learned why drone folks always download footage after EVERY flight. Sorry about that…. I found a place that made me a sandwich in Moab and located my hotel before turning in for the night.
Sony Creative Space NYC 2022 by Sony Artisan Patrick Murphy-Racey PM-R TV 2022-11-26 | Every once in a while, Sony will produce a "pop-up" creative space for people to come and play with new cameras, lenses, and technology that Sony is bringing to the marketplace. In the old days of the brick and mortar camera industry, manufacturers would hold new products until Photokina in Germany or at one of the big Las Vegas shows. So you could set your watch by when new stuff was going to come out. Sony lacks that history and they move much faster and so Creative Space was born. Not willing to wait on someone else's schedule, Sony delivers new product on their own schedule. Street Photography with the SONY a7C with the Lensbaby Composer & Sweet 50 in Toronto, ON Canada PM-R TV 2022-10-29 | Every once in a while I get to spend time in a city other than mine and I get the gift of time to shoot a little on my own, away from the normal assignments. Today was one such glorious day, when I had no agenda but discovery, no assignment but my own, and a whole gorgeous Autumn day to spend by myself in one of my favorite Canadian cities: Toronto. My choice of equipment was easy. I chose the SONY a7C because it is so lightweight and the battery lasts forever. I chose one lens which was the Lensbaby Composer with their Sweet 50 attached. I love dong selective focus photography and this setup is perfect for walking the 5.8 miles I managed today. I could literally follow the light, watch people, see things come together, be patient, and shoot to my heart's content. Typically, I shoot the Sweet 50 at about f/2.8, not quite wide open but almost. I then use the camera's shutter speed to control the exposure, using manual ISO set mostly at 160. I simply compose the shot by moving the front of the lens towards where the subject is in the frame, focus, and shoot. I hope you like the results. The new FJ Westcott FJ80IIS flash and FJ-X3S Trigger for SONY users!!! Finally!!! PM-R TV 2022-10-24 | The FJ Westcott solution for flash is awesome with their FJ400 & FJ200 strobes , and their FJ80 speed-lite but neither the FJ80 or trigger had a true Sony foot for the multi-interface shoe on the top of all Sony cameras. Now they have a brand new FJ80IIS speed-lite just for Sony as well as a new Sony specific trigger called the FJ-X3S. No more plastic foot!!! Awesome!!!
Sony a1 & 400GM lens 4K video 60P 4:2:2 over-cranked (1/1000th f/2.8 @ 100 ISO) [no sound] PM-R TV 2022-09-21 | I've now shot a couple of games with my Sony a1 camera and Sony 400mm f/2.8GM lens but I've been shooting video instead of stills. I have been using 120P and 60P frame rates but I've been going much higher with my shutter speed than most videographers would be comfortable with. Normally, you are supposed to shoot at one stop higher than your frame rate, so 120P is closest to 1/125th sec shutter speed. One up from 1/125th is 1/250th and this is the "normal" shutter speed for that frame rate, except that when I try to harvest still frames from that video, the images are not sharp due to motion blur. So I'm using 1/1000th - 1/1250th as my norm and the still frames I'm harvesting are looking pretty good. They are easily good enough to be published in a newspaper or magazine and even enlargements up to 11x14". I'm finding very few people are doing this but I think the video looks decent, though I'm breaking longstanding rules. What do you think?

Overcranking 4K 120P video at 1/1000th: It works and produces very usable still-frame grabs PM-R TV 2022-09-19 | This is the third game I've shot using a very unorthodox shutter speed at 1/1000th at the frame rate of 120 frames per second. Normally the rule of thumb (shutter angle) would be one stop faster than the frame rate, so at 120P you shouldn't go higher than 1/250th. But this shutter speed will not yield sharp enough images when you frame grab them. 1/1000th is about the slowest shutter speed that you can use to begin to stop fast action whether it's in sports or performance (think dance). The use of faster than normal shutter speeds when shooting video is call over cranking. I feel strongly that the still image is not dead yet but video is the preferred way to view content on phones and tablets these days. I'm trying to learning new tricks to remain relevant and try to stay ahead of the curve I know is coming. I'd love to hear your comments and if you have found any solutions for getting the a1 or a7SIII to track with the EVF instead of the touch focus screen. I used the Sony a1, the Sony 400mm f/2.8GM, and the Sony 70-200mm f/2.8GMII to shoot this video.
SonyKandoTrip 4.0: Day 3 Was all About Shooting for Me :) PM-R TV 2022-09-02 | The first two days of Kando was all about going to classes, participating in meetings, and spending time with engineers at meals. The 3rd day was all about shooting for me. Sony provides models so you can check in with Sony Pro Services, check out whatever gear you want, and then make appointments with various models to shoot with. It's all super close, and with the Idaho mountains as the backdrop, it's tough not to make amazing photographs. I did a first try using Sony's proprietary flash system and I really like the results. All of the offerings from GoDox and even Wescott are massive, huge speedlites that barely fit in a pocket. The Sony flash is tiny and I think it will get a lot of good use for me at wedding receptions and on more PR oriented assignments.Many thanks to two people who helped me on this shoot: @graceehoffman held the light for me outside while @kennypratt4 shot the BTS video for me. I offer what's in my top case on the bike to aid others thinking about long distance trips on two wheels. This trip mixes business in Little Rock and a bike exchange as I traded out my 07 Suzuki Vstrom 650 for a 2014 Yamaha Super Tenere 1200. It was a much easier trip headed West (S10) than the return trip back East to Knoxville (Weestrom) but the Suzuki help up its part of the bargain. Back in 2020, I gave myself 3 months to learn Affinity Photo and Dump Adobe. It took me 3 hours! PM-R TV 2022-08-01 | Back in 2020 I made a video about wanting to get away from Adobe's practice subscription based billing. I only ever used three of their titles and didn't want to pay for everything they sell. I planned to give myself three months to learn three new software titles, Affinity Photo (instead of PS), Capture One (instead of LR), and Final Cut Pro (instead of Premiere Pro). I started with Affinity Photo and three hours later, I was doing everything that I used to do in PS. My success in switching away from Adobe's PS encouraged me to push further and I learned Capture One and FCP in just a couple weeks. Instead of three months, I cancelled my Adobe subscription three weeks later and have never looked back. I am saving a lot of money!

How to set up the Sony a1 to do In-Camera Cropping on the fly while shooting assignments. PM-R TV 2022-07-25 | Many of us use the SONY a1 every day for shooting assignments whether for news, sports, or covering events. Social media is not going away and we need the ability to share images directly from our cameras to our phones fast. Sony's Imaging Edge software allows this but if you crop an image after it was sent to your phone, you are cropping a 2M file, which can fall apart fast. A better way is to use a built-in function of the camera to crop before you share. This video explains this process and how to set your a1 up to do this like me.

The new Sony E 10-20mm f/4 PZ G Lens is outstanding for video and stills on FF AND APS-C cameras PM-R TV 2022-06-28 | The new Sony E 10-20mm f/4 PZ G Lens is a great option for people that are shooting any APS-C sensor camera like the a6000, a6400, a6600, ZV-E10, FS7, and FS5, but it's also fantastic on the a1 in APS-C/crop mode. It is the smallest, lightest super-wide Sony has ever made and it ZOOMS without the hassle, weight, and bulk of servo-style lenses. By using the four AF motors inside the lens, Sony engineers figured out how to multi-task the AF motors and use them for zooming in and out at the same time. This saves weight. the lens offers the full-frame range of 15-30mm at a static f/4 aperture. I found it very sharp even wide open with almost no chromatic aberration. amazingly, the 10-20G shows almost no vignetting even when shooting wide open. I have been using it interchangeably between the ZV-E10 (for vlogging) and the a1 for shooting super-wide video.
