Project Boat Tail 18 Removing Rust with Electrolysis Keeperof Themountain 2021-12-12 | What's cooking? An ongoing battle for all car guys is the fight against rust. Exhaust parts are probably the worst. They are subjected to everything all the other parts are and then they get maniacally hot on top of all of that. To remove this rust, I have a few options. I can remove it mechanically, using a wire brush or a sandblaster, however, I would run into a few problems. First problem: A wire brush is mostly ineffective on manifolds. Sandblasting would work well on cast iron but, it is very messy and it takes way more air compressor than I have. I could also remove the rust chemically, however, that also has a few problems. Chemicals are expensive, messy and then there is the problem of disposing the byproducts. For electrolysis, you will need mostly things every shop already has.You will need;A tub big enough to submerge your part it. A battery chargerA sacrificial piece of metal. Some form form of electrolyte to make the water more conductive. Normal table salt will do, sodium bicarbonate. However, the best to use is sodium carbonate or washing soda. In my case I used what was available to me. Baking soda. The sacrificial piece of metal, needs to be cast iron or steel. No stainless steel. If you use Stainless steel, you will introduce chromium to your water tank. The reaction will produce hexavalent chromium, this is very bad for your health.Most people say you need one tablespoon of soda for every gallon of water. However if you hook up the power and it bubbles, You have enough.When hanging your part in the solution, use a steel wire. I used re-bar tie wire. You can buy it at the hardware store by the roll. A coat hanger will also work. Do not use copper or aluminum. Putting anything but steel in the solution will create problems.Critical is making sure that the sacrificial metal and the part are not touching. Then hook the positive lead to the sacrificial metal and the Negative lead to the part. I ran mine on the 12 volts DC setting. Once the electricity starts flowing through this, you will see bubbles coming out of the part and the sacrificial metal. The positive lead is the Anode. The bubbles coming off of the Anode are Oxygen. The bubbles coming off of the Cathode or the negative lead are Hydrogen. So do this outside if you can but in a well ventilated space. This is a slow process so be prepared to let it cook for a day or two.I hope this helps.Have fun cooking your car parts!This Video contains My Theme music which I own all rights to.
