Retro-Futuristic EngineerEvery Retro-Youtuber needs a project - and mine is the RetroARDUInput. Reasons to use USB keyboards, mice and joysticks on old computers are plentiful. You have bought an old computer on a flea market and don't have the matching input devices? You want to create the ultimate KVM from past to present, with USB input devices, HDMI monitor and USB/HDMI KVM switch, from C64 or Tandy 1000 over Amiga and Apple up to PCs from XT to modern Ryzen or Core-i? Anything shall be possible - shall...
Inspiration was Adrian Black from Adrian's Digital Basement. His project "Build an adapter to use a cheap PS2 keyboard with a Tandy 1000!" brought my attention to the Arduino and his code snippets were the firestarter. And so the result is that, besides of PC/XT, PC/AT and further computers, also the Tandy 1000, extremely rare in Germany and unfortunately missing in my collection, appears in the compatibility list.
This was also a chance to refresh my rusty programming skills after 15 years of work in satellite communications and broadcast system integration and also to explore totally new fields like PCB-design and 3D printing - Things I never done before.
The project is Open Source and can be freely built. All required files including Arduino sketch, PCB as KiCAD project and Gerber files for direct order, case as FreeCAD project and STLs for direct printing or order, as well as a German and English documentation are all placed on Github.

In this video I analyze a seemingly quite common error with Arduino USB host shields that I bought from several vendors in Germany over a long period of time. I can't fix it, but I have found a workaround. This has inspired me to lower the priority on the software backlog (ADB mouse and keyboard, PS/2 mouse) and work on the hardware platform. Since a bugfix cannot be implemented in the RetroARDUInput Classic, or only with a lot of effort, I have brought forward my future step "RetroARDUInput Modular".
And this will not only be bigger and more beautiful, but will also have another rare protocol: Joysticks can work as C64 and Atari Paddle and a USB mouse becomes a 1351 Proportional Mouse for the C64.

After a short technology overview, which besides the consumer-accessible technologies FDM and SLA also briefly takes a look at inkjet and SLS/SLM, we compare FDM and SLA with each other and what particularly speaks for one or the other technology in the retro area, if you want to print parts for computers, video recorders or even cars. We also take a look at tricks that are not quite official, such as printing on T-shirts or exposing circuit boards.
Since FDM has a special appeal in the retro-computer sector, we will look at a few peculiarities of different filaments.

And today I want to introduce you to a very special DOS game, which you surely don't know, unless you attended the same school as I did in 1995 and took computer science as an elective subject in the 10th grade.
It's called "Spiel des Wissens 2001" ("Spiel des Wissens" = "IQ 2000" or "Game of Knowledge") - 2001, because 2000 was already quite worn out in 1995 and we had to change a few things in the game anyway due to programming peculiarities - so the action was moved from the galaxy to the sea in order to be able to display the game field still meaningfully with the limited 640KB RAM.
Besides multimedia features, based on help from the Data Becker books "PC Intern 4", "PC Underground" and "Das große Soundblaster Buch", things relevant to teaching were implemented in the programming language given by teaching, Turbo Pascal 6.0, among others verification of answers, free text input, including a spell checker, which should also allow small typos - this also had a small bug, which was then left in as a feature, as a cheat.
Since the game concept for "Spiel des Wissens"/"Game of Knowledge" is of course copyrighted by Milton Bradley (MB Games), questions from the Spiel des Wissens expansion pack (other general knowledge questions, other question areas for the planet fields - in our case ships, poison barrels, oil rigs and everything else that swims around in the sea) were used and furthermore some samples from 90s music underpin the gameplay, I never published the game anywhere for download. Nevertheless I would like to present it to you today.

Alles sollte gehen - sollte...

I did not manage to mod the c't V20 XT BIOS. The Turbo-XT BIOS, for which the Assembler code is available, the mod can be easily integrated into the BIOS before the Build. But I like the PC20 for the chirping noise after the selftest, also known from the PET, so I'm glad that this mod worked that easily and I could mute the Tandy soundcard without impacting the originality of this computer.
Tandy Sound in a standard XT Clone? #SepTandy (English version)Retro-Futuristic Engineer2021-09-26 | It's #SepTandy, the month in which the retro community celebrates the products of the American manufacturer Tandy RadioShack. And as Tandy was only available as import in Germany and I don't have anything from Tandy in my collection, but I always wanted this legendary Tandy sound, of which you could read in so many games, back then in the late 80s, I now have equipped my XT Clone, a Commodore PC20-II with a card which I would have bought back then, would it have existed then, a Tandy Sound Board.
This video introduces the card, the setup and some games and how good they run - or don't run

Except of having a TTL output and a CGA/EGA switch. In the retro month of EGA graphics, the #EGAnuary, we have a closer look at this thing.
In this video, I show the device itself, explain the reason why we have composite video and composite decoders, explain some basics about CGA and VGA TTL and then show some cartoon and series intros (partially, muted audio because of copyright) that show how this device can give any DVD the look of an 80s PC game. And in the end, I also make some assumptions about the use cases for this device, as a professional use case requires some power of imagination.
#DOScember? If you are emulating in DOSBOX or ScummVM, capturing and streaming game footage is an easy thing. But if you want to play on real hardware, e.g. because you want to use native 3Dfx Voodoo Graphics using GLIDE API, because emulation is not working properly for your game or just because you are a retro hardliner and real retro gaming requires real retro hardware, you might experience some challenges.
This video gives you a short overview on the MCE2VGA as one possibility to raise the standard of your Retro-PC's output to a slightly more modern level that is supportet by at least some capture devices, some chinese VGA to HDMI Dongles and a really universal standalone capture and streaming device, the Cloner Alliance HDML Cloner Pro / Cloner Box ProDOS auf einem Amiga 500 - Vortex AT-Once Plus 286 #DOScember (Deutsche Version)Retro-Futuristic Engineer2020-12-31 | Es ist #DOScember, der Monat rund um MS-DOS.

MS-DOS was an OS for Intel 80x86 based systems? Sure, but it was also possible on other platforms.
The Amiga Series was, as a very capable competitor, a computer with a lots of add-ons that allowed to run MS-DOS. This was surely intended, as so it could bring best of both worlds, DOS-PC productivity and Amiga gaming experience.
For the Amiga 500 and Atari ST line of computers, German manufacturer Vortex assembled some AT-class boards which brought different x86 CPUs to these computers, allowing to run MS-DOS. And one of their products, the AT-Once Plus 286, is introduced in this video.
