About the chant:
Ave Maris Stella is a popular liturgical hymn of unknown origin. It can be dated back to at least the 9th century for it is preserved in the Codex Sangallensis, a 9th century manuscript now in the Swiss Monastery of St. Gallen. Its appearance in the Codex points to a composition possibly in the 8th century. The hymn is frequently attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) and sometimes has been attributed to King Robert (1031), both of whom are too late to have authored it. It has also been attributed to Venantius Fortunatus (d 609) and Paul the Deacon (d 787). It is found in ancient codices of the Divine Office for Vespers on Marian feasts. Today it is still in use in the Divine Office and in the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin.

About the chant:
Schubert’s inspiration was the epic poem of Sir Walter Scott, The Lady of the Lake, written in 1810. The poem tells the fictional tale of 16th century Scottish clans at war with each other and in rebellion against the king. Schubert wrote a cycle of seven songs based on the story, using the German translation of the poem by Philip Adam Storck.
The heroine of the poem is Ellen Douglas who has fled with her exiled father to a mountain cave to escape the pursuit of a rebel chieftain. While in the cave, Ellen sings a song praying to the Virgin Mary for help, accompanied by the harper Allan-bane.

About the chant:
At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Other kings had done the same, of course. Louis was different in that he actually interpreted his kingly duties in the light of faith. After the violence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice.

The axis of the song centers around Louis' appeal to his barons, who have doubts and excuses for not accompanying him. However, the king will contest his objections one by one. At the end of the song the king will succeed in convincing his vassals to accompany him, and then they embarked for Egypt.

Louis deserves credit for extending justice in civil administration. His regulations for royal officials became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the use of written records in court.

Francis vir catholicus, lauds Saint Francis orthodoxy, describing him as the “wholly catholic and apostolic man,” making clear that the way of life Francis lived and proposed is in accord with the teachings of the church. This antiphon is based upon the Vita Prima, which states that “Francis put the faith of the Holy Roman church above and beyond all things, preserving, honouring and following it, since the salvation of all who would be saved was found in it alone.” It also echoes some of Francis’ letters where he refers to a certain individual as “catholic” and exhorts reverence toward the ordained clergy, especially because they minister the body and blood of Christ in the eucharist. Christians have always prayed for their country, even when its leadership was persecuting them. The Lord Jesus was displayed on the cross as an anti-Roman revolutionary, yet He never advocated revolt as many Jewish zealots did. His approach was rather, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17). The apostolic writings, composed when Roman officials began repressing Christians, still insisted, “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities” (Romans 13:1). St Paul here offered his most elaborated statement on supporting the civil authority by prayer “For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. About the chant:
On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII infallibly proclaimed the dogma of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Of course, belief in Our Lady's Assumption into Heaven was nothing new, as testified by the 5th Glorious Mystery of the Rosary and a Mass in honor of her Assumption, titled Gaudeamus omnes.

To honor the declaration of the dogma, Pius XII commissioned a revised set of Mass propers for the feast (similarly as Pope Urban IV did for the Feast of Corpus Christi in 1264) which were introduced into the Missale Romanum in 1951.

Chief amongst the revisions was the composition of a beautiful new Introit by a Benedictine monk of Solesmes, starting with the words Signum magnum.

About the chant:
This is a very moving hymn, expressing love and desire for Jesus Christ and His reign over the hearts and minds of men, but also over society at large. This is a doctrine that has always been taught by the Catholic Church: namely, that Jesus Christ should reign even in the public sphere. His laws should be helped and fostered by the civil laws, which in turn should never contradict the Divine Law.
Many people today, without putting it into words, think along these lines: "Jesus is nice, He is sweet and He makes me feel good, but He has no place in public life. Real problems need REAL, practical solutions, not silly grandma stuff like prayer and total submission to God's will. That stuff is fine for nuns, but we're grown men, enlightened citizens of the 21st century! We don't want to regress and devolve into Theocracy like all those backward states. Man has evolved far since the dark, ignorant days of the middle ages, when the Church had great influence over society and public life -- but now, Man has evolved so highly, he scarce has any need of God. In fact, he is now very close to God Himself!"

About the chant:
At his coronation as king of France, Louis IX bound himself by oath to behave as God’s anointed, as the father of his people and feudal lord of the King of Peace. Other kings had done the same, of course. Louis was different in that he actually interpreted his kingly duties in the light of faith. After the violence of two previous reigns, he brought peace and justice.

The axis of the song centers around Louis' appeal to his barons, who have doubts and excuses for not accompanying him. However, the king will contest his objections one by one. At the end of the song the king will succeed in convincing his vassals to accompany him, and then they embarked for Egypt.

Louis deserves credit for extending justice in civil administration. His regulations for royal officials became the first of a series of reform laws. He replaced trial by battle with a form of examination of witnesses and encouraged the use of written records in court.

About the chant:
Forty days after the resurrection, Jesus and His disciples went to Mount Olivet, near Jerusalem. There, Jesus promised His followers that they would soon receive the Holy Spirit, and He instructed them to remain in Jerusalem until the Spirit had come. Then Jesus blessed them, and as He gave the blessing, He began to ascend into heaven. The account of Jesus’ ascension is found in Luke 24:50-51 and Acts 1:9-11.

It is plain from Scripture that Jesus’ ascension was a literal, bodily return to heaven. He rose from the ground gradually and visibly, observed by many intent onlookers. As the disciples strained to catch a last glimpse of Jesus, a cloud hid Him from their view, and two angels appeared and promised Christ’s return "in just the same way that you have watched Him go" (Acts 1:11).

The "Anima Christi" (Latin for ‘Soul of Christ’) is a Catholic prayer to Jesus of medieval origin.
For many years the prayer was popularly believed to have been composed by Saint Ignatius of Loyola, as he puts it at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises and often refers to it. In the first edition of the Spiritual Exercises Ignatius merely mentions it, evidently supposing that the reader would know it. In later editions, it was printed in full. It was by assuming that everything in the book was written by Ignatius that it came to be looked upon as his composition. On this account the prayer is sometimes referred to as the Aspirations of St. Ignatius Loyola.
The invocations in the prayer have rich associations with Catholic concepts that relate to the Eucharist (Body and Blood of Christ), Baptism (water) and the Passion of Jesus (Holy Wounds)

About the chant:
This is beautiful sequence used by the Catholic Church, written in 1048. Sublime, poetic, and beautiful, this hymn is considered extremely precious by the Church. She only makes use of it once a year, during the greatest feast of her liturgical year! This hymn expresses a simple, living and childlike faith that the Saints were known to have. How beautiful it is, to see that the same things were believed at the beginning of the second millenium! This hymn is almost a thousand years old, yet our Faith is the same today as it was then. How marvellous is the Catholic Faith, which doesn't change with the times, but always remains the same - "Jesus Christ yesterday, today, and tomorrow". The essentials of our Faith must never change, as there is no change with God or Jesus Christ. God is the Unchanging One.
Easter is indeed the greatest feast, even greater than Christmas. There is at least 40 days preparation for Easter, but only 4 weeks for Christmas. Furthermore, Our Lord was born in order to redeeem us -- so the feast celebrating his life's mission (the Redemption) must be the most important.
This sequence is sung during the Day Mass of Easter Sunday (after the Alleluia). It is sung acapella, but can also be used during Benediction as a hymn. The version on Compendium 1 does have organ accompaniment since it was recorded during Benediction.

The sixth and last Sunday of Lent and beginning of Holy Week, a Sunday of the highest rank, not even a commemoration of any kind being permitted in the Mass.....The Greeks celebrate the day with great solemnity; they call it kyriake or heorte ton baion or heorte baiophoros or also Lazarus Sunday, because on the day before they have the feast of the resuscitation of Lazarus. The emperors used to distribute branches of palm and small presents among their nobles and domestics. The Latin liturgical books call it Dominica in Palmis, Dominica or Dies Palmarum. From the cry of the people during the procession the day has received the name Dominica Hosanna or simply Hosanna

About the chant:
On the Saturday before Holy Week, the Orthodox Church commemorates a major feast of the year, the miracle of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ when he raised Lazarus from the dead after he had lain in the grave four days. Here, at the end of Great Lent and the forty days of fasting and penitence, the Church combines this celebration with that of Palm Sunday. In triumph and joy the Church bears witness to the power of Christ over death and exalts Him as King before entering the most solemn week of the year, one that leads the faithful in remembrance of His suffering and death and concludes with the great and glorious Feast of Pascha.

Each year, Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent and is always 46 days before Easter Sunday. Lent is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays) marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration. The 40-day period represents Christ’s time of temptation in the wilderness, where he fasted and where Satan tempted him. Lent asks believers to set aside a time each year for similar fasting, marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.
For fifteenth-century Christians, frequent meditation was necessary to condition and re-form the soul.In general, the goal of contemplation was to bring peace to the soul and direct it towards salvation. Devotional aids provided material for reconstructing one’s soul for the purpose of attaining Heaven instead of damnation.

Chevalier, Mult estes guariz is a crusade song from the central Middle Ages. It remains anonymous and is one of the oldest songs to have come down to us. Following in the footsteps of Joseph Bédier and his joint work with Pierre Aubry (Les chansons de croisade, 1909).
Around the middle of the 12th century, and more precisely in 1144, the fortress of Edessa (Rohais, the present-day city of Şanlıurfa or Urfa in southern Turkey) fell to Imad ed-Din Zengi, atabeg of Mosul and Aleppo. Still known as Zengi, the man was also nicknamed 'the bloody one' by the Christian chroniclers of the time (quite a programme). Very advanced in Islamic lands, the county of Edessa, which was one of the first Latin states in the East, was then under the regency of Queen Melisende of Jerusalem. Her heir Baldwin III was only 13 years old and still too young to govern.

About the chant:
Abbess Hildegard of Bingen presents a number of paradoxes to the "modern" mind. She was a woman in a man's world, yet she rose to command an abbey and wrote political advice to Holy Roman Emperors.
O pastor animarum's text simply and directly prays to the divine Son, whom Hildegard names "shepherd of souls...by which we all have been created." She asks this shepherd to liberate the pray-er from misery and languishing. Despite the simple and brief nature of the text, appropriate for a liturgical antiphon, the poetess deliberately invokes the most splendid antiphons of the church year, the great "O" Antiphons sung before Christmas. Her music, as well, transcends the mundane. In the first seven notes, Hildegard makes a characteristically dramatic leap up a melodic fifth, then completes the ascent of a full octave. The second phrase effects a balanced descent, and the third descends to the depths and races forward in a melismatic exploration of the word "created" before returning triumphantly to the tonic. The petition that forms the second half of the text perfectly echoes the same melodic pattern. Thus the singer of Hildegard's music literally touches God, as she literally sings His music.

About the chant:
This is an intriguing record, illustrating some aspects of the musical life of a community of Benedictine nuns in the great French double monastery of Fontevrault, an early medieval royal foundation. In 1304, Eleanor of Brittany became its sixteenth Abbess, having been trained as a nun in the English daughter house of Amesbury. The Gradual that bears her arms contains, in addition to the normal chant repertoire, a special repertoire of its own. It is this collection of miscellaneous pieces that throws special light on the musical life of these nuns. Some items were undoubtedly intended to embellish parts of the liturgy itself on high feast days; others are more likely to have been used as pious entertainment during moments of recreation.

Written by Fr. Juan Escollar (d. 1700), this hymn was formerly used at Matins for the feast of St. Joseph, Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary (March 19). It is still used for this feast, but for Lauds instead. It is also the hymn for Lauds for the Feast of St. Joseph the Worker on May 1.

About the chant:
Burned at the stake as a heretic after a politically-motivated trial, Joan was beatified in 1909 and canonized in 1920.

Born of a fairly well-to-do peasant couple in Domremy-Greux southeast of Paris, Joan was only 12 when she experienced a vision and heard voices that she later identified as Saints Michael the Archangel, Catherine of Alexandria, and Margaret of Antioch.

During the Hundred Years War, Joan led French troops against the English and recaptured the cities of Orléans and Troyes. This enabled Charles VII to be crowned as king in Reims in 1429. Captured near Compiegne the following year, Joan was sold to the English and placed on trial for heresy and witchcraft. Professors at the University of Paris supported Bishop Pierre Cauchon of Beauvis, the judge at her trial; Cardinal Henry Beaufort of Winchester, England, participated in the questioning of Joan in prison. In the end, she was condemned for wearing men’s clothes. The English resented France’s military success–to which Joan contributed.

The chant's text comes from Galatians 3:27
Paul has just made an enormous statement. In the previous verse, he declared that all who are in Christ Jesus "by faith" are the children of God. Gentiles no longer need to think of themselves as God's step-children. The rights and privileges of a full son or daughter of God are available to all who trust in Christ for their salvation from sin.

Now Paul describes this connection we have with Christ, the Son of God, as even closer than siblings. Those who trust in Him "put on Christ" like a garment. Paul likely has in mind the kind of robes worn in the Roman Empire during his day. To put on Christ is to be completely covered up by Him. To be "in Christ" is to be so closely identified with Him that we experience life through Him, in a sense.

O Ierusalem celebrates Saint Rupert. Hildegard re-founded his monastery in 1150 and moved there with her nuns. The original buildings were destroyed by the Normans (the ‘fools’ of the Sequence), providing Hildegard with a potent but implicit comparison between her monastery and Jerusalem, destroyed on Earth and rebuilt in Heaven (Revelations 21, whence some of the imagery of this Sequence is derived). The ‘living stones’ (‘vivis lapidibus’) have been taken from the hymn Urbs beata Ierusalem for the dedication of a church (but compare 1 Peter 2: 4–5). Perhaps Hildegard composed this Sequence for the dedication ceremony, or for its commemoration. In this case the ‘ostensio’ of stanza six may be an ostension, or ‘showing’, of the relics of Saint Rupert during the ceremony.

As the first poem composed in Polish, Bogurodzica has a firm place in Polish cultural history. The hymn is an instance of the most archaic form of the Polish language and an example of medieval religious ‘high art’ music.
The name of the hymn, Bogurodzica (‘she who gave birth to God’) was actually a translation from the Greek ‘Theotokos’. It dates, most likely, from the thirteenth century. Several versions of it, together with musical notation, have been preserved, and, as a matter of fact, the song became, for few centuries, a kind of national anthem.

Absolve, Domine is the Tract of the Mass of the Dead. In the Tridentine rite it follows the Gradual, with which it is sometimes combined in a single movement. It is usually omitted by Viennese composers or set separately, as Fux did.

The requiem mass, musical setting of the Mass for the Dead (missa pro defunctis), named for the beginning of the Latin of the Introit “Requiem aeternam dona eis Domine” (“Give them eternal rest, O Lord”). The polyphonic composition for the requiem mass differs from the normal mass in that it not only includes certain items of the Ordinary—e.g., Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei (the joyful portions, Gloria and Credo, are omitted)—but also contains the Introit and Gradual from the Proper. A tract, followed by the sequence “Dies irae” (“Day of Wrath”), is substituted for the Alleluia and often is a major dramatic element in the composition. Sometimes responses and other text are added from the burial service, which follows the mass.

Non nobis Domine. Latin, date unknown. The phrase ‘Non nobis Domine’ comes from the Vulgate (Psalm 113: 9). In the 1611 translation of the Bible, the King James Version, it opens Psalm 115 (‘Not unto us, not unto us, O Lord’): the Latin phrase appears at the head of that Psalm in the Book of Common Prayer. It is a prayer of thanksgiving for some great achievement which avoids the sin of pride by ascribing the credit to God. The phrase begins ‘Non nobis Domine, sed nomini tuo da gloriam’.

About the chant:
Hymn of the Cherubim is an excerpt from the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Op. 41, a sacred, a cappella choral work Tchaikovsky completed in 1878. It was the first “unified musical cycle” of settings of the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom, one of the central eucharistic services of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The core of the text is attributed to Saint John Chrysostom, Archbishop of Constantinople in the 5th century.

“A vast and untrodden field of activity lies open to composers here,” wrote Tchaikovsky to a friend regarding the text. In a letter to his close patron, Nadezhda von Meck, Tchaikovsky mentioned the “poetic” meaning he found in attending church services:

At the time, Russian church officials were quick to censor and ban the performance of new settings of sacred texts they found unacceptable. Much of Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy was quickly confiscated by the director of the Imperial Chapel in Saint Petersburg. Tchaikovsky’s publisher, Pyotr Jurgenson, entered into a long legal battle and eventually won.

This psalm is short and sweet; I doubt the reason why we sing it so often as we do is for the shortness of it; but, if we rightly understood and considered it, we should sing it oftener for the sweetness of it, especially to us sinners of the Gentiles, on whom it casts a very favorable eye.
A solemn call to all nations to praise God, ver. 1. II. Proper matter for that praise suggested, ver. 2.
We are soon weary indeed of well-doing if, in singing this psalm, we keep not up those pious and devout affections with which the spiritual sacrifice of praise ought to be kindled and kept burning.

In the period of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, many Christians fled, bringing the Bulgarian Church chants to other countries; features of the Bulgarian chant are found both in Orthodox and Latin manuscripts. In the mid-17th century, some Bulgarian chants came into use in Russian church singing. The chant is performed from the Synodal Lenten Triodion with an ison by Alexander Semyonov.
“Joseph with Nicodemus takes Thee down from the tree, who clothest Thyself with light as it were with a garment; and when he saw Thee dead, naked and unentombed, he mourned with compassionate wailing and said: Alas! Ash Wednesday comes from the ancient Jewish tradition of penance and fasting. The practice includes the wearing of ashes on the head. The ashes symbolize the dust from which God made us.
