Digital Foundry’s Misleading Monster Hunter Wilds Review

I'm gonna be honest with you here. some people trying to play monster hunter wilds are having a bad time (tm). a lot of people are experiencing technical issues with Monster Hunter Wilds on PC. the pain is real, and these issues deserve attention.

If you're one of these people, it’s important for us to figure out what’s really going on—whether it’s hardware limitations of your system, driver issues, or game-specific bugs.

That's why its even more important that performance reviews of monster hunter wilds are honest, accurate, and conducted with care. Unfortunately, Digital Foundry’s recent “review” of Monster Hunter Wilds fails on all these fronts. From improper testing conditions to misleading hardware choices, their analysis is not just flawed—it’s actively deceptive. And it's causing a backlash brigade of trolls flooding comments and forums, from people parroting DF's talking points. Largely people who haven't even played the game. Just like DF hasn't even played the actual game.

If you're still in disbelief that they could get this so wrong, just keep watching, because I'm gonna lay it all out for you.

Improper Testing Conditions

The foundation of any credible performance review is proper testing conditions. Unfortunately, Digital Foundry’s review of Monster Hunter Wilds fails at the most basic level. The reviewer didn’t even engage with the game properly—they clicked through the default character creation settings and got to the first place in the game where they could start spinning the camera in circles.

I don't know about you, but I get a bit suspicious when people who don't actually play the game start telling me how well that game runs.

and then, At 4:23 in the video, DF confidently states, “I’m a performance reviewer, I know what I’m doing.” This is the perfect ironic setup for what transpires over the course of the rest of the video.

Maybe someone can tell me in the comments why a knowledgable performance reviewer would spend almost the entire video showcasing 1440p performance using a 1080p GPU? That's right. the video predominantly shows the rtx 4060 running Monster Hunter Wilds at 1440p.

Now before you tell me that the 4060 should be able to run 1440p, let me just remind you that DF THEMSELVES consider the 4060 to be a 1080p card. their OWN review of the 4060 benchmarks it at 1080p. it spends almost its entire run time showcasing its performance at 1080p. For the 4k performance, they aren't running this card native 4k. they are UPSCALING from much lower resolution.

So why would a knowledgable performance reviewer make such a huge oversight?

I've been playing Monster Hunter Wilds for a several hours now, and I've gotta say, I'm impressed.

Some things I want to get out of the way right up front, because that's what you're most interested in.

number one, this game runs exactly as I expected it to: pretty damn good. The performance easily outpaces that of the beta and the benchmark, and it actually LOOKS so much better than either of those as well.

for everyone who is still doubting, or still uneasy, all i can say is, im running a 6650xt, and im able to play this game in 1440p. Yeah. one tier higher than what my card is rated for. This is an AMD card, and that probably has something to do with it. And this is all without the day one patch.

it's unfortunate that certain channels gave you guys such a negative impression of the game's performance, but i'm hear to tell you, as someone who actually PLAYS monster hunter, and actually LOVES monster hunter, that it is far exceeding my expectations in terms of performance and visual fidelity on PC. So if you are also a monster hunter fan, then maybe don't take advice from people who don't even really play video games...

The other thing people were concerned about was the difficulty level of the game. I can say with 100% confidence that monster hunter wilds early game is extremely EASY...for someone who has spent ten thousand hours over the last decade playing games in this franchise!

literally everyone saying the game is too easy, is someone who cannot even recall what it felt like to play through the first few quests in their first MH title. For someone coming into this game brand new, i assure you that the challenge is there. Not too hard, mind you, but nobody is gonna breeze through this game on their first go.

now if you know me at all, you know I don't really care for story or cutscenes or dialog in my video games.

That's my personal preference, and most people I know don't share that preference. But I like what capcom has done here in allowing me to click through dialog quickly and skip ALL the cutscenes.

That said, I'm actually liking the story so far, at least the parts I haven't skipped. I also like that my character talks during the cutscenes, something that was sorely missing from World. Overall the dialog isn't really annoying at all. It doesn't feel like a chore to sit through, or to skip. It doesn't really feel like dialog at all. It just feels...natural. I think a lot of it has to do with the understated interface. no real screen clutter and just a smooth exerience overall. Clicking on someone to talk to doesn't take me out of the game the way most dialog scenes do in games.

and the way all the npcs move and interact with you is just so much more natural. when you walk into them, they actually react to that, rather than you just ghosting through them!

And the coolest feature i've seen yet: there is a pause button for the cutscenes! insanity i know.

Other things I'm liking in this game: The changes made to CB are awesome. Everything is consolidated into one tight, efficient package. I like how you have to do something special to activate savage axe, but there's like three different ways to do it, so the uptime on it is close to 100%.

Mounting is great, and you can do this from the seikret at will. you do have to build it up of course. Speaking of the seikret, I thought the mounted healing and sharpening would be gimmiky and kind of a cheat, but it feels good. it feels natural. a lot of people did this in rise, and it actually works a lot better here.

Another big concern I had was: is this game going to look washed out? and i'm glad to report that, no, it does not. There are weather events that occur that will change the look of the maps, but on clear days, everything looks beautiful. I think this was actually a good choice artistically, because it makes me appreciate how well designed these maps are visually, rather than taking them for granted. Will I get sick of it after a while? that remains to be seen.

this is the first monster hunter where the very beginning of the game feels awesome. aside from my first monster hunter. how did they manage to recapture some of that feeling of being brand new to me? by making these early monsters look awesome. You're not just sitting her spamming great jaggis and ludroths.

Concerned that Musk might file lawsuits against publishers who haven’t licensed his AIDS technology, Capcom has filed patents for their Dynamic Drop Adjustment System (DDAS) in 37 countries. These patents are designed to protect Capcom from any legal shenanigans Musk might try to pull."

According to leaked documents, Capcom’s legal team is preparing for a potential showdown with Musk. One internal memo reads: ‘We must protect the integrity of the Desire Sensor. If Musk claims ownership, we risk losing control of a core mechanic that defines our games.’
