I've been wanting to build a level like this for a while now, but eventually para's "untitled unmastered" gave me the ultimate determination to do so, I think it came out really nicely :)
I'm still looking forward to fixing a few visual aspects of this level when I come back from vacations, so the final product may or may not vary ever so slightly from what's in the video

song: Crop Circles by flashHideOut by BrainETRorots2025-02-25 | While the format for unrated level reviews will stay intact, I'd also love to talk about levels that have already gained some traction, something that isn't really possible to fit into a single bundle just once a week. That's why I'm going to try managing a separate schedule exclusively for these "hot topic" levels, hopefully once every Tuesday. (Edit: on second thought, I'm actually gonna do both on Fridays)
First up is HideOut by BrainETR, a creator most people should be familiar with by now. His unique blend of modern and effect styles has made him one of the most beloved creators in the game, though his style hasn't evolved much over the years. That’s why it was nice to see him branch out more into art this time. Some of his recent levels have been definitely teasing this direction, but it was still surprising to see him lean into it this much.
This level is a submission for the Space Gauntlet contest, being released approximately 1 month before the deadline. You’ll still get about what you’d expect from a quality BrainETR project, except this time, everything feels noticeably more refined and polished. The gameplay stays slow and chill throughout, which definitely helps the quirky visual style stand out a bit more. Admittedly, at times, it feels like you’re just autopiloting through very monotone click patterns, but that’s a much better alternative to having the gameplay obscured by overbearing visuals (case in point WANNACRY).
While there isn't much else to say about the level itself, I want to quickly point out how much the consistent color scheme matters here. Besides some obvious references to the lyrics, there isn’t much worldbuilding going on, as it kind of feels like you're passing from one part to another, with only a vague portrayal of an apocalypse tying things together. Normally, this would make the level feel like a disconnected set of idea pieces, but thankfully the playfully saturated, eye-pleasing color palette brings everything together in a nice way. It gives the level a unique charm and makes the experience feel a lot more cohesive than it actually is. I thought that was worth mentioning, since you rarely see that in XL levels nowadays.
This might be BrainETR’s best level so far, or at least in terms of visuals. Again, I wish that the gameplay was a bit more imaginative, but it’s by no means bad. It’s catering to the broader audience, and I can only respect that.
Song: Trippple - Hideout newgrounds.com/audio/listen/1248887I SAW A SAVIOUR by swshi - Level Revieworots2025-02-21 | I've decided that for this new "series," I want to maintain a consistent schedule, ideally every Friday at 5:00 PM CET. I'll always try and find an unrated level interesting enough to yap about since there isn't really a way for me to have unique input on rated ones. I also may do voiceovers in the future, but idk about that yet.
For this week, I chose I SAW A SAVIOUR by swshi, a very creative level that sacrifices its playability for more unique song representation. That’s not to say these two can’t coexist, but one can certainly suppress a lot of potential in favor of the other. The unwritten rule to cater to the average player with all kinds of different gameplay elements or visuals is completely dismissed here. It stays unwavering in its commitment to the song, and that decision pays off well.
As you'll see, the gameplay only consists of a 2 section spider corridor that is repeated throughout the entire level to the drum riff of the song. The only thing that changes as you go on is the environment around you. To paraphrase what I said about it on twitter, I absolutely love the setup for the progression that later happens in the song, the claustrophobic spaces you're thrown into and the initially cold color palette help elevate the rising temperature of the air around you and amplify your sense of danger. The immersion is definitely the greatest strength of the level, the only time that gets broken is at the very end, where the screen goes black and you're instantly thrown to the endscreen. In the moment, it comes off as kinda goofy, but it's nothing to the detriment of the experience as a whole.
This may sound silly, but if I had to really cherry-pick another complaint, it'd be that swshi didn't actually title the level after the song, Machine Gun by Portishead. Going so far to stay as integral to the song as possible should warrant naming the level accordingly, right? I get that "I saw a saviour" is in reference to the very first lyric, but in this instance it just feels iffy. Regardless, it's still an amazing body of work. I'm in an awe of how perfectly the musical elements were transformed into the visuals here. This level lives and breathes in its song, it exists in it, and highly respects its confines.

song: youtube.com/watch?v=SLj50h7D2QcGLORIOUS FORTRESS by JamAttack | Geometry Dashorots2023-10-16 | Glorious Fortress is yet another JamAttack banger that showcases his competence with the gd editor. every part beautifully segues into one another, and together they create a very fun and cohesive theme. it was great watching the absurdly drawn-out development process on his youtube channel in the form of a 3 episode series, and i have nothing but admiration for the determination that went into creating this monster. all in all, this is a fantastic addition to an already exceptionally high-quality catalog of JamAttack's levels.

Speed core feels like a sister level to another previously released one of theirs, Awakening, which is actually one of my favorite level to have come out this year so far. this level leans into a more core-style approach while still maintaining the beauty of what made Awakening so special to me, and i can't help but admire it. this style is so easy to accidentally botch and Tabu somehow nails it effortlessly every time.

this level does a relatively good job matching its song and creating an unearthly atmosphere, although i can see more potential in carrying over the emotion of some of the passages in the song that unfortunately haven't been fully explored here
i'm quite confident this will end up getting a feature, if not an epic rate, and if it does, it 100% deserves it. i'm a huge fan of what this level aims for and its worthy of receiving some appreciation for it. great job nick, can't wait for cloudscape, however long that still needs to take

Song: newgrounds.com/audio/listen/639410Motion Picture Soundtrack by gecko0, rafer and StarkyTheSalad | Geometry Dashorots2023-01-16 | There's just so much in this level that I absolutely adore. From the very beginning where (I'm guessing) rafer and gecko went absolutely crazy with the littlest details that synchronize to the subtle sound effects in the song, to the very end that concluded the entire thing so beautifully, this level expresses the song pretty much flawlessly. Obviously the music representation is what makes this level stand out the most. The black screen fading at around 3:05 and the transition to Untitled at 4:20 both gave me mad goosebumps. It felt like the sweet relief of death and final ascension to afterlife. I HIGHLY doubt we'll see another level to a Radiohead song executed so perfectly.
The level is called "MPS" in-game btw.

Today I saw Max's post about Arpeggi on twitter and decided to try it out. I can't describe how much in love I am with this level. Everything from start to finish is just perfect. Despite a couple of roadblocks here and there, especially in the first 3 parts of the level, this might be one of my favorite demons that I've ever played. While ImMaxX claims that the difficulty is estimated at around a hard demon, I personally think this is a high-end medium demon, mostly because of the highly accurate sync that greatly diminishes the actual difficulty. I can see people thinking otherwise, partially because of the first couple of parts being a little harder than the rest of the level.
Decoration-wise there's not much to highlight other than the uniqueness of ImMaxX's style. It's very strange yet endearing, to the point where it's pretty hard to pinpoint the genre that it fits best. I'm super excited to play more levels of his soon.

For some, it may come off as iffy, often resulting in arguments whether certain levels of her should be rated or not. While not every level of her fits into the rating standards, this specific one caught my eye. I'd consider the main highlight of it the gameplay, which gave me by far one of the most enjoyable experiences with a non-demon level. Although a couple of orbs were skippable, it felt more satisfying to play through the level the intended way. As for the decoration, it is much how you would expect a Braeden level to look: eerie colors, unusual structuring and unconventional designs. It's hard to identify Braeden's approach to each of her levels, so the best way to refer to it would be probably just calling it her own style.
Hot Sauce deserves to receive a feature, potentially even an epic rating for its extraordinarily fun gameplay. The contentious thing about deciding whether each of Braeden's should get rated or not is that for a lot of people her amount of creator points raises the standards of rate worthiness, which makes it harder to specify the rating prediction. Despite that, I think it's a really solid and underrated level.

Song: newgrounds.com/audio/listen/862408to the stars by popugauchegg | Geometry Dash Review Time #6orots2021-09-26 | to the stars is a simple modern level made by popugauchegg. Most of the level keeps up great colors and awesome attention to the detail, in addition to the great glow usage. It starts right off the bat with a very bright color scheme and it keeps up the theme for the rest of the level. Colors seem to be always either blue or pink and it's not particularly a bad thing. I do think there could be more variety in the level as it appears to be a bit lackluster in that aspect though. Generally speaking, there's nothing too interesting about the visuals, but it still presents itself very well. I really liked the very simplistic cityscape in the first part, which while it looks a bit bland, it works perfectly well in the context of its part. In a way, I wish the decoration here was a bit more imaginative, but there's nothing wrong with a simple modern level like this one. It's still upbeat, works well with the music, and plays very well. Unfortunately, I didn't like the song representation here. The main reason for that is how poorly popugauchegg made the pulses sync with the music, often leaving them feeling awkward. Despite the gameplay matching the song decently well, there's nothing else going along with it. I wish there was just a little more to it, but nevertheless the designs were enjoyable to look at. This will most likely get featured!!
Song: newgrounds.com/audio/listen/729484Harian by Xaiomy | Geometry Dash Review Time #5orots2021-09-17 | Harian is a modernistic level aiming to create a huge variety throughout the level. It gets its job done pretty well, as the parts differ quite decently from each other. The modern style included in the level is clean most of the time. The main elements that you may notice in the level are the background arts, which were executed pretty well in my opinion. While some of them had some flaws, like the unnaturally bright shade on the shirt at 0:13 or the cup at 0:54, most of them felt okay. One more complaint i could add about them is how some of them felt more simplistic than others (for example the game boy at 0:23 had much more attention to detail than the other ones), leaving this weird inconsistency in quality. However, the rest of the scene was done pretty well, which makes this flaw not as noticeable.
Unfortunately, I have more gripes with this level. First of all, Harian contains pretty strange air decoration elements to look at. A great example of that would be green pillars at 0:01. Something about them just feels wrong, and it might be the half opaque black shade behind them that creates this weird contrast to the part. The pillars themselves could also get either a color change, or be completely removed. They seem to not work well with the block design in particular. Similar assets to those pillars can be also found at 0:23, where they are replaced with multiple circles connected to each other, and at 0:45, where they are white instead. There's the same issue in both of these parts, where either the outline or the shadow is too dark. Since they're filling in the foreground, it's very easy to pay attention to them. Some of the transitions could also get a rework, as most of them are limited to simple black gradients, which feels rather lazy. I also feel like the blue orb at 0:35 is completely out of place. It serves no good gameplay purpose as I managed to die there 4 times, which was more than any other place in the level. I think it blends in with the rest of the designs too much, making it really hard to read.
Despite these gripes, Harian is still a pretty decent level. Although there are a couple of things that need to be changed, I found Xaiomy's style to be very clean and fresh. I really loved the bouncing art elements at the drop, and little details like this mean a lot. Additionally, Xaiomy is a creator with no creator points at the moment, therefore I think this level deserves to receive at least a star rate, if not a feature.
Song: newgrounds.com/audio/listen/986283Robust by ReinnCloud | Geometry Dash Review Time #4orots2021-09-11 | Robust is a pretty simplistic level, however it pushes its designs pretty far. Although it uses pretty basic modern structures and miscellaneous decorations, it fills in empty space with black borders, smooth transitions, fantastic movements and glow. These aspects are the most noticeable at 0:03, where there's little bloom on every block and every structure bounces, making the level feel super alive. Also, every part here has a very fresh color scheme, therefore not requiring many more details to feel more finished. I do think it's a little empty all the way through, as the things mentioned above can't really stand on their own. Many assets have been copy pasted and it's really noticeable, especially at 0:39, where all the structures and air decoration are pretty much the same and don't change. My recommendation would be either to make the structures more varied, or make the copy-paste seem less relevant, by for example adding more intense color pulses to distract from it.
Despite some minor flaws, I really enjoyed this level. It is rather short, but goes straight to the point. The bouncing objects that move to the music feel really smooth and satisfying to look at, and it's possibly this level's biggest strength. There could be more things put in each element of the song as some parts felt a bit too drawn out, though. Gameplay was really fun as well, it's synchronized to the music nearly all the way through, but kind of loses its focus in the last wave part. I wish the quality was a bit more consistent here, because I liked the beginning a lot. Still, I think this level deserves to be featured. It was really nice.
Song: newgrounds.com/audio/listen/912055Yatagarasu Easy by DiaboloHD, Arrownote and Babaisme | Geometry Dash Review Time #3orots2021-09-02 | Yatagarasu Easy is a collaboration between DiaboloHD, Arrownote and Babaisme. It's aiming for that simple modern level aesthetic, and it achieves its goal pretty well. I see, however, a lot of potential in the level that could've been realized to make this level even better. DiaboloHD's part in particular is really clean, and I like the way it uses gradients for block decoration. Those colors change as you're progressing throughout the part too, which is a really awesome detail!!. Sadly, Yatagarasu Easy looses a bit of that charm after this part. The rest of the level seems to be pretty random and completely irrelevant to DiaboloHD's part, which was a great first impression.
While the rest 75% of the level is a small letdown compared to the beginning, I still thought it was okay. Arrownote's part has lots of fantastic ideas, but it's not using them the right way in my opinion. Pink outlines look weird when they're pulsing in the dark color, and the background seemed a bit off. I could say the same thing about what Baba built; if it had more heart poured into it, it'd be a really solid part of the level. It looks rather unfinished and empty, and I didn't really mess with the monochromatic colors. There are a lot of things that could've made it stand out from the rest if those two parts were worked on for a bit longer, and adding things like a blending overlay, more color variety or effects would've helped immensely.
I still think that this is a fairly reasonable level. I just wish the ideas were a bit more fleshed out, and that the quality was kept after the first part. Personally speaking, I think this could get a feature.
