Zoo and Plaza de la Raza Cultural Center for the Arts & Education are excited to announce the third year of the Beloved Pets Ofrenda in observance of National Hispanic Heritage Month and Día de los Muertos. The ofrenda is designed to honor the memory of cherished animal companions that have passed away. All Zoo guests are welcome to place photos, drawings, and momentos of their pets on the ofrenda – located at the Zoo’s Front Entrance Plaza near Sea Life Cliffs. It smells like the first annual #InternationalManedWolfDay! These striking South American canines are sometimes described as a “fox on stilts.” However, genetic studies show that they are neither a wolf nor a fox, but a unique species that belongs in its own genus. At the Zoo, you will likely smell the maned wolves before you see them. They mark their territory using their own pungent scent glands and latrines. They also roll around in other strong scents, which is a behavior thought to cover their own odor to hide from prey or other predators. “Maned wolves love all things stinky,“ says Animal Keeper Monica Richards. Our maned wolf pair enjoys novel fragrance enrichment like cologne, musk, or other animals urine. The stinkier, the better! #ManedWolf #Canine #EnrichmentMeet Marshall The Rhino!LA Zoo2023-10-04 | Something BIG has come to the L.A. Zoo! Introducing Marshall, a four-year-old male greater one-horned rhinoceros. 🦏 Marshall arrived Saturday, Sept. 9 from Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. He has spent the last month in quarantine, which is a requirement for all new animals, and helps veterinarians and animal care staff monitor behavior and health to make sure that he is acclimated to his new habitat. We are happy to report that he is settling in nicely. “Marshall’s arrival in Los Angeles is truly a moment of pride for our City,” said Denise Verret, CEO & Zoo Director, Los Angeles Zoo. “The L.A. Zoo has a long history in providing husbandry, care, and wellbeing for rhinoceroses and supporting their conservation in their native habitats. The Zoo is thrilled to bring this keystone species back to L.A., which will allow Angelenos to form deeper connections to rhinos and support these animals both in Los Angeles and in the wild.” Classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), conservation efforts have helped increase the greater one-horned rhinoceros' population to around 4,000 individuals. This species of rhino is largely solitary in nature. Zoo visitors can view Marshall in Rhino Plaza, located across from the Sumatran tiger. #Rhino #GreaterOneHornedRhino #LAZooSave The Birds With Coffee!LA Zoo2023-09-29 | Celebrate #NationalCoffeeDay while helping birds in the wild! ☕🐦 You can purchase bags of Bird Friendly certified Birds & Beans Coffee in our gift shops. Zoo animal care staff recently joined conservationists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to release approximately 170 endangered Zoo-bred southern mountain yellow-legged frogs into native habitat in the San Gabriel Mountains. Most of the frogs were hatched at the Zoo and raised by the Aquarium of the Pacific and Santa Ana Zoo. “This release is momentous for the L.A. Zoo as it marks another key milestone for our southern mountain yellow-legged frog breeding program,” said Ian Recchio, L.A. Zoo Curator of Reptiles and Amphibians. “We are proud to be part of this long-running recovery effort with the USGS and partners. We hope Angelenos will see this effort in their own backyard and think about actions they can take to help conserve wildlife.” Since the Zoo’s breeding colony was established in 2007, nearly 6,000 L.A. Zoo-bred frogs have been released into the San Gabriel Mountains and surrounding habitats.

He still has a long way to go before then and will be cared for by his parents to learn the necessary social skills to become a well-adjusted adult condor. ‟Mandan and Jan will teach LA123 how to function within a social landscape and read subtle cues from other members of the flock,” says Animal Keeper Chandra David. ‟This will pay dividends for a smooth transition from human support to a life of independence.” #IVAD #InternationalVultureAwarenessDay #LAZooCondorStories #Vulture #CondorGo Bananas For Primates!LA Zoo2023-09-01 | What's *your* favorite primate to see at the Zoo? Zoo is home to four species of crocodilians: the American alligator, dwarf caiman, Indian gharial, and tomistoma. The gharial is the only surviving member of a group of animals that arose in the Cretaceous period, about 144–65 million years ago. Now, they are critically endangered, with fewer than 900 mature individuals estimated to remain. Tomistomas are considered vulnerable to extinction as well, due to habitat destruction. Both are protected by the Endangered Species Act. Your visit and donations to the L.A. In the wild, this Madagascan species has an average life expectancy of 15 years. Fossas are tree-dwelling animals known for making spectacular leaps, but as she nears the quarter-century mark, Brittany’s not as spry as she used to be. She’s being treated for arthritis and has also experienced hearing loss. When Brittany was younger, her keepers would routinely hide or hang food items at various heights throughout the habitat to encourage her to climb and explore. “But at this point, we pretty much serve it up on a silver platter,” says Sgriccia. “It’s fun to cater to her,” Gorowski adds. “At this age, she deserves to get what she wants, as long as it’s balanced and appropriate and approved by our nutritionist.” Read more stories highlighting the care that our senior animal residents receive at the Zoo in our member magazine, Zoo View! bit.ly/3NlwELf 📹: Animal Keeper Molly SgricciaMountain Tapir Inca Munchies ASMRLA Zoo2023-06-09 | Inca the mountain tapir knows a tasty snack when she sees one! Servals, like other wild cats, often "play" with their prey. Even though this serval is being fed a frozen and thawed rat for breakfast, the instinct is still strong. These instincts, such as batting and pouncing, are derived from hunting behavior. Servals do this to tire out prey before eating it, which reduces the chance of injury to the cat. #Caturday #Serval #Cat 📹: Animal Keeper L'Oréal DunnCute Francois Langur BabyLA Zoo2023-05-26 | A helpful dose of serotonin cuteness via our François’ langur infant to get you through the weekend!
