If you’re at all up to date with comedy as a genre these days, you may have noticed the popular trend in comedic media like movies, tv, certain stand-up comedians, and even some commercials, where instead of making jokes that relate to the characters or their situations, they seem to be more aimed at… you.
The voice of today is all about getting deep, getting under the skin of what even counts as a joke. This special self-aware, self-destructing brand of humour is called “Meta”, and this is what comedy is nowadays, whether it’s the high performing blockbusters, or the memes you share in your group chat.

I wanted to talk about something that has been bugging me for a while - not just the title of the WRECK-IT RALPH sequel, but what other people seem to think it should have been called.
BORAT SUBSEQUENT MOVIEFILM was powerful in a lot of ways, from its comedy to its politics, but compared to the original BORAT film, as well other contemporary edgy media from 2006, the BORAT sequel is surprisingly earnest and mature and progressive - today we explore why and how BORAT 2 redeemed the character, the franchise and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Thanks to all the comedians and creators who provided Borat impressions! Welcome to the Director Project! A monthly playlist series where creators from all across film Youtube make a bunch of video essays analyzing a chosen director. For February 2021, we're looking at Nora Ephron!
While it didn't do well with critics and is mostly forgotten today, Nora Ephron's 2005 BEWITCHED remake/reboot/reimagining starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, actually has quite a lot to say about filmmmaking and the film industry. So what better way to explore this concept than by comparing it to STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER?

Welcome to the Director Project! A monthly playlist series where creators from all across film Youtube make a bunch of video essays analyzing a chosen director. For January 2021, we're looking at Christopher Nolan!
In the age of the sympathetic villain, why is Heath Ledger's Joker still the king? We've had some of the most complex and compelling blockbuster villains put to screen in the past decade and a half, from Thanos, to Kylo Ren, to Killmonger, to Joaquin Phoenix's Joker - and they all share a deep tragic backstory and sympathetic motivation.... Except for Joker from Christopher Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT, a villain so chillingly devoid of sympathy. He's two dimensional, pure evil with no to speak of. So why do we still love him, even today?

For our submission, we look towards PORCO ROSSO, an outlier in Miyazaki's mostly feminist filmography... Or is it? Is Porco's sexism and misogyny meaningless? Or is it an avenue for Miyazaki to discuss and critique toxic masculnity? All men are pigs! Or are they?

KNIVES OUT is the hilarious compelling blockbuster of the year! But, looking a little deeper, what does the movie say about the divided political landscape of the 2010s?
The BACK TO THE FUTURE animated series is a weird forgotten pop cultural relic, lost to the sands of time and better cartoons.
