My name is Aaron Jepson, and I have autism. For 15 years, I was unable to communicate with my parents, with my brothers, with anyone. Three years ago, I learned how to communicate my thoughts and feelings. They all realized how smart I was this whole time. The first thing I communicated was how much I hated my life. How could a loving God do this to me? Though I was bitter, I knew my parents loved me. They taught me that I was a child of God. I came to understand that my autism has given me a voice. My life has purpose and is meant to be full of service and love, to share the light of Jesus Christ with everyone. For this, I rejoice and am exceedingly glad (see Matthew 5:12).

So, if church exists to help us feel closer to God, it needs to be bigger than a Sunday service. What if believers didn’t just form a congregation? What if they formed an extended family of faith? No matter where Latter-Day Saints live, and they live all around the globe, one thing remains constant: Every member of the Church belongs to a local group of believers. It’s called a ward. Here’s the Relief Society. Every ward has one, and together they form one of the largest women’s organizations in the world. Tonight, it looks like they’re putting together care packages for neighbors in need. It’s not easy being a teenager these days, so every ward has a strong youth program to reinforce values and let the kids know they’re not alone. It looks like someone needed some help moving. Oh, it must be Monday! Time for family night at home. Tomorrow is a neighborhood party, and it looks like everyone’s invited! Sunday the ward meets together, but there’s no paid clergy. Everyone volunteers their time., That includes duties in the church, and service projects around the community, or just dropping in to say hello. It’s what Jesus Christ did, and that’s why it’s what Latter-day Saints do wherever they are all over the world.

Annie was vivacious and fun and loving. Fearless all the way. It didn’t matter if she had to bushwhack from her car straight to the place she wanted to go. I had never felt that kind of distress before; it’s a weight that would crush you. If it weren’t for others, I don’t think we would have been able to deal with it. We received a lot of letters from these little children. They said things like we are praying for you, and it brought me so much comfort. It was amazing to have a couple of really close friends drop everything and just be with me. It was so comforting and gave me strength that I didn’t know I had. To have people mourn with you, to be sad with you, that you knew that there were those that cared—it was that kind of love and support that we felt from people that was absolutely overwhelming. We just hope that we can be half as good as people were to us for the rest of our lives, that we can give back because we know how much it meant.

That’s on purpose. So, what makes it different? Well, let’s go back to biblical times. From the very beginning, God’s people have built temples. Moses had his tabernacle, a sort of traveling temple. Then Solomon built a temple—one of his greatest achievements. During His life, Jesus Christ spent a lot of time in the temple at Jerusalem, helping, healing and teaching. And basically, that’s still what happens in temples today. Here, let me show you. A temple is different from other church buildings. Inside the different rooms, people make promises with God. Promises to keep His commandments. Promises to be good husbands and wives. Promises to share what we have to help take care of each other. Because Latter-day Saints believe families are eternal, temple marriages are performed to last forever, so families can always be together, and that includes our ancestors too! So, who can go inside a temple? Well, first, everyone. When a new temple is built there’s an open house for the public. Afterwards, it is only open to members of the Church who have prepared themselves to make sacred promises with God. The truth is, temples aren't special because they look pretty from the outside. Instead, it’s about what happens in the hearts of the people inside. Because that’s where God does his most important work.

They channeled their grief into a sense of peace and purpose by hosting an annual “Hero-Up Half Marathon” to raise money for children’s cancer research. We live in Portland, Oregon, and we created a race that we do every year in our community that raises money for children’s cancer research. The race is the Hero Up Half Marathon and 5k, and then we also do a kids race. I'm always the Hulk, always. It’s just allowed everyone to come together and have a really fun day on a day that for us normally would be really difficult, and that’s pretty special. When our son Keith was three years old, he was diagnosed with a form of brain cancer. He fought for 19 months, and eventually he passed away. His treatment was miserable, and yet he was not a miserable kid. He would just always say, “I love you., I love you” over and over again. When he passed, I couldn’t just sit still, because it just hurt. I needed to keep busy, I needed something to do. I was running one day, and I just thought, you know what? I think I can put together a run to raise the money and have it go specifically to children’s cancer research, and I started thinking about how we could make it unique, and Keith just really identified with superheroes. That’s kind of how it started. Children’s cancer treatment is brutal. I just feel like we’ve got to come up with a better way to treat these kids. That’s my goal is to keep raising money to feel like it’s helping others, even if it helps in a small amount. It just helps me feel like I’m doing something worthwhile and something meaningful. This specific piece of equipment here is one that the lab purchased with the funds that we donate from our children’s cancer race. We have people who show up from work and Church. I’ve never felt more peace, seen more compassion from people. The strangers that want to do something to contribute to this cause that is so personal to us, it’s just really inspiring every year. I think compassion is love, it’s empathy, and I think we’ve just learned to think more like the Savior, and when we’re hurting, it actually helps to reach out to other people and let them know that they’re not alone. Christ taught us compassion is something that should be part of our lives, because we are all sons and daughters of Heavenly Father trying to show compassion to others like others did to us. That’s where I find peace; that is healing for me.
