Press Conference & Community Outreach at 46th St Station after Fatal Stabbing of 17-Year-Old Girl Passengers United 2024-05-13 | On the night of Wednesday, May 8, 2024, an altercation between a 15-year old and a 17-year-old (both female) broke out in Sunnyside, Queens, near the 46th Street 7 train station. It made its way into the station entrance stairs, where the 15-year-old pulled out a knife and stabbed the 17-year-old. The 15-year-old escaped onto a Flushing-bound 7 train, and emergency responders brought the 17-year-old to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.The NYPD's investigation has been hampered by the lack of functioning surveillance cameras in the station (they were covered up with black garbage bags). Many of the lights inside the station and station complex are out as well, creating an unsafe atmosphere at night.We responded to this tragedy the next day (May 9), where we not only held a press conference to demand better safety conditions but also to join the grieving community at their vigil (put together by friends of the deceased) and provide outreach and support to them when no one else would do so. Special thanks to our friend and fellow community activist Talea Wufka for stepping in, providing emotional support, and being of tremendous help to everyone involved. Man who sexually attacks 19 year old woman fires machine gun at MTA police in Jamaica Passengers United 2023-12-30 | From MTAPD: At approximately 2211 hours, a 19 year-old female complainant approached officers at the MTAPD Jamaica district office alleging that a man had grabbed her breasts and blocked her path on the sidewalk outside a few minutes earlier. She displayed a picture she had taken on her phone of the perpetrator, who is wearing a distinctive jacket. Officers begin within two minutes to canvass the area and at approximately 2216 hours two uniformed MTAPD officers observe the suspect, still wearing the jacket in the victim's picture, near 91st Avenue and Sutphin Boulevard, approximately one block from Jamaica Station. As the officers attempt to arrest him, the suspect resists, reaching toward his waistband, and refusing to comply with officers' requests to show his hands. At approximately 2219 hours, a shot is fired by the perpetrator. Both officers step back and draw their service weapons, as the suspect's MAC-10 submachine gun with a 30-round extended magazine becomes visible. Both officers then fire, striking the suspect in the head and elsewhere on his body. The perpetrator was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2320 hours. The suspect's gun was recovered at the scene (photo attached). Incident captured on officers' body-worn cameras. Both officers were transported with trauma to an area hospital. The investigation, which is in early stages, will be led by the MTA Police with assistance from the NYPD. Notification is being made to the Office of the NYS Attorney General and MTA Inspector General. Suspect is a 52 year-old male, with identification withheld pending family notification.

MTA Queens Bus Network Redesign Press Conference for the Final Plan Passengers United 2023-12-12 | The new Queens Bus Network Redesign plan still leaves many parts of Queens without adequate bus service. In some cases, it also creates transit deserts with extreme bus stop eliminations, forcing mobility-challenged commuters (e.g. senior citizens and people with disabilities) to walk longer, causing them to miss their buses and have to wait at least 15 minutes for the next one. Riders also don’t know if there service has increased or decreased.In today’s press release, the MTA mentioned that “83% of riders will continue to use the same bus stop that they do today.” This is not a convincing argument because it does not explain who the 17% are that will lose their bus stops. Keep in mind that, if we assume that everyone in Queens uses the buses, this amounts to nearly 386,000 people losing their stops.We fear that this plan may discriminate against the very riders the MTA is supposed to serve and, as a result, would violate Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. Furthermore, this final plan does not show existing and proposed revenue miles and hours. We also call for this new plan to be held off for another year so that the new ridership patterns caused by congestion pricing can be assessed and incorporated into it. We should note that congestion pricing will harm many community members who will already be harmed by this plan, as they may be compelled to switch to other transportation modes such as Uber and Lyft, which would have a greater monopoly in the city.———Note from the President: Passengers United was not allowed to stand at the MTA podium and our comments were not included in the final press release that the MTA sent out. The comments expressed in this video do not represent those of Passengers United. Unfortunately Riders Alliance was allowed to stand at the podium during this press conference along with transportation alternatives and go to the press technical briefing we however at Passengers United was not allowed to attend. The MTA is afraid of the truth and continues to discriminate on minority organizers.
