The Hidden Connection Between Sleep and Dementia FoundMyFitness 2021-04-21 | New research has identified associations between poor sleep and increased risk for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. More than 2,800 older adults participated in the study. They completed questionnaires about their sleep quality, including how long it took them to fall asleep, how long they slept, and whether they snored. The study investigators collected information about the participants' cognitive health or if they died from any cause during a period of five years after completion of the questionnaires. The findings revealed that participants who reported getting fewer than five hours of sleep per night were twice as likely to develop dementia compared to those who had seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Taking a long time to fall asleep (more than 30 minutes) increased the risk of dementia 45 percent. The authors also found that getting fewer than five hours of sleep per night, having daytime sleepiness, and taking regular naps increased the risk of all causes of premature death. Dr. Steve Horvath on epigenetic aging to predict healthspan: the DNA PhenoAge and GrimAge clocks FoundMyFitness 2020-12-22 | Steve Horvath, PhD, ScD is a professor of human genetics and biostatistics at UCLA's Fielding School of Public Health. Dr. Horvath is the creator of the Horvath Epigenetic Aging Clock. His work incorporates elements of biostatistics, genetics, epidemiology, epigenomics, and other fields of study. He applies his understanding of this diverse range of disciplines to study a spectrum of chronic diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegenerative disease, and other diseases of aging.Dr. Horvath's so-called "pan-tissue epigenetic aging clock" is an algorithm that accurately predicts a person's chronological age from marks on the DNA across multiple cells, tissues, and organs, and even mammalian species. Further refining this initial algorithm, Dr. Horvath built on this to develop second-generation clock algorithm that could predict time-to-death among people of the same chronological age, as well as lifespan and healthspan. NAD+ in Aging: Role of Nicotinamide Riboside and Nicotinamide Mononucleotide FoundMyFitness 2020-01-28 | In this episode, Rhonda explains what NAD+ is and why it declines with age. She discusses some of the popular NAD+ boosters like nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide, what animal and human data says and some concluding thoughts. NAD+ is crucial for our survival. Small amounts of it can be obtained in the diet, but the body recycles it to get most of what it needs. Unfortunately, day to day living plus normal aging can cause NAD+ levels to drop. This causes metabolic and mitochondrial dysfunction, as well as many of the other problems and conditions associated with aging like elevated DNA damage. NAD+ levels can go up when we exercise or fast, but NAD+ precursors like nicotinamide riboside and nicotinamide mononucleotide can also increase NAD+ levels in a dose-dependent manner. However, most of the data on NAD+ boosters comes from animal studies. Dr. David Sinclair on Informational Theory of Aging, Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, Resveratrol & More FoundMyFitness 2019-11-06 | ⏳ David A. Sinclair, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Genetics at Harvard Medical School and co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging. He is the co-founder of the journal Aging, where he serves as co-chief editor. Dr. Sinclair's work focuses on understanding the mechanisms that drive human aging and identifying ways to slow or reverse aging's effects. In particular, he has examined the role of sirtuins in disease and aging, with special emphasis on how sirtuin activity is modulated by compounds produced by the body as well as those consumed in the diet, such as resveratrol. His work has implications for human metabolism, mitochondrial and neurological health, and cancer. Dr. Sinclair obtained his doctoral degree in molecular genetics at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, in 1995. Since then, he has been the recipient of more than 25 prestigious honors and awards and in 2014 was named as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.
