EXPERIENCE #2 👉Single hydrogen bubble growth by water electrolysis
Let us introduce you to Alexander Bashkatov from Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf
.
👨‍🔬Alexander is working on the hydrogen generation in micro gravity and specially on #Marangoni convection.
In your opinion, why study bubbles in microgravity is extremely important?
.
🌿The main motivation is that the hydrogen gas produced via water electrolysis is a clean and renewable energy source that can be used directly as a fuel or can be compressed-stored and later converted to the electricity via fuel cell. A better understanding of the bubble evolution might bring new ideas on how to improve the dynamics of hydrogen bubbles and hence its production in general.
.
👩‍🚀Moreover, on #ISS there is a severe problem for the hydrogen production, the bubble cannot detach efficiently from the electrode surfaces, and this retard the efficiency substantially.
.
So, why is it important to study it inside the Airbus A310 Air Zero G?
.
✈️Microgravity environment suppresses natural convection due to buoyancy, and static pressure, while the surface tension, electric force, Marangoni convection and inertia due to bubbles coalescence will dominate.
.
👨‍🔬By means of the parabolic flight experiments, Alexander want to understand :
.
1. How the shape, growth rate of the bubble and current response (resistance) will change under different g levels?
2. Bubble-bubble interaction and the role of coalescence of the small bubbles with mother bubble along growth and detachment periods with lack of buoyancy force might be clarified.
3. The Marangoni convection was related to solutal- and thermal- effects. By study of the Marangoni convection at the bubble foot at different bubble size, the question which effect dominate might become clear.
4. Bubbles of different size will be guided to an electric field. By analyzing the movement of the bubble inside the electric field, the zeta potential of the could be calculated.
.
😃✈️ Enjoy your flight Alexander!
