Domestic demand is gradually picking up, mainly in facility investment and services, but recovery rates vary across sectors."The government has been consistently diagnosing domestic consumption as showing "signs of recovery" since May, citing improvements in the services sector, among other factors.However, it has also noted a disparity between the recovery of exports and domestic demand.Service production increased by point-2 percent in August compared to the month before, marking the third consecutive month of growth.Retail sales an indicator of consumer spending were also up by 1-point-7 percent month-on-month.However, compared to the same month last year, retail sales decreased by 1-point-3 percent, showing an ongoing downward trend.The government reported that it expects an increase in retail sales to be tallied for September due to recorded growth in credit card spending and domestic car sales also noting that the Chuseok holiday and the release of the new iPhone series could have an impact.While domestic demand has shown mixed signals, exports continued to perform well on the back of the booming IT sector.Exports increased by 7-point-5 percent in September, marking 12 consecutive months of growth.Driven by strong export performance, manufacturing production also increased by 4-point-1 percent in September compared to the previous month, and by 3-point-8 percent compared to the same period last year.The government maintained its assessment that inflation is stabilizing.Consumer prices rose by 1-point-6 percent year-on-year in September, marking the first time since March 2021 that the growth rate has fallen below 2 percent. Compared to ten years ago, the number of people who read more than one book over a year has decreased from 70 percent to nearly 40 percent, which is the lowest on record.With more exposure to digital gadgets, we are definitely spending less time on our traditional means of reading, which is why the expert I talked to suggested we cultivate an environment where more people can read. Arirang News 2024-10-17 | 이자 줄고 투자자금 늘고… WGBI 편입 의미와 효과는?After years on the watch list, South Korea's government bonds will soon be included in the World Government Bond Index.To delve into what this milestone means for the nation's economy, our finance correspondent Moon Hye-ryeon joins us here in the studio.Hye-ryeon, first of all, what exactly is the World Government Bond Index?Well, Jung-min, it's a prestigious global index that tracks the performance of high-quality government bonds from developed and emerging countries.If a country’s government bonds are included, it can have major economic implications.FTSE Russell announced last week that South Korea would be officially joining the ranks of its benchmark index starting November next year, after being placed on its watch list since 2022.To be included, strict criteria related to market quality, liquidity, and accessibility must be met, and there was speculation that Seoul would only be given the green light next year.The inclusion was therefore reported to be something of a surprise, but a number of reforms to increase accessibility for foreign investors ticked the boxes needed for the FTSE to make its decision.South Korea already met the requirements for market size, but it extended its foreign exchange trading hours and simplified procedures for foreign investors earlier this year.You mentioned that being listed on the index could have major economic implications. Our government considers this a very serious issue."The government underscored that such actions would fall under international scrutiny and sanctions, calling once again for a halt to the illicit military cooperation between Moscow and Pyongyang.The response from the government came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy repeated his recent claims that North Korea is now sending military personnel to help Russia’s war effort, as well as transferring weapons.Experts in South Korea say Pyongyang likely would have sent the troops, based on the recent comprehensive strategic partnership treaty between Russia and North Korea that states military coordination in the case of foreign attacks."I think the claim made by the President of Ukraine is credible. It is likely that Pyongyang will gradually escalate the intensity of its troop deployments to Russia in line with this agreement."Russia's foreign ministry was quick to dismiss the allegations, calling them "irrelevant." "North Korea and Russia both deny this but there seems to be rather strong evidence.
