This is a re-edit of my original music video "Big Blue Dress". Many people have been asking for me to upload a better version to YouTube now that it supports higher resolutions and wide screen. Also since I've started using YouTube to post my videos, some people wanted them all in one place. In converting this old video to wide screen, I actually had to edit it from scratch because just trimming the original didn't work as you might expect. As a result, there are some minor differences between this video and the original. Since I was doing it from scratch, I did change a few things that you might notice. However, I tried to keep these changes very small.

For you machinimators out there, I strongly recommend that you archive your footage and your project files because you never know when you might want to do something like this.

I wrote this song and shot all the footage in 2005. Not only was this before the Burning Crusade expansion pack, but also it was before the first "mage love" patch which made the mage more powerful. So please don't focus on the numbers you'll see in this video. The video was never about the critical hits. If I could have removed that text, I would have. In some cases I was able to because I was using a "camera man", but in other cases it was live footage with the UI turned off (try it some time), but I couldn't turn off the damage numbers. That said, these crits were about as good as it got in early 2005. I could have gone bigger with trinkets and arcane power, but this was considered bad form in videos at the time.

How do you fly?
That's not flying. That's falling with style. :) In this video, most of the flying is performed by casting Slow Fall, a mage spell that causes you to ... fall slowly. Then I mount up on my epic mount and run and jump off a cliff. You can jump from the Lumbermill to the Blacksmith in Arathi Basin, for example.

How do you cast a giant fireball while moving/flying?
The mage talent "Presence of Mind" (aka "POM") causes your next cast to be instant. So I cast this spell and then cast Pyroblast. Since it's instant, you can cast it while moving/flying.

What's that white horse? Where do you get it?
The white stallion was the original human epic mount. It's no longer available in game. Only those who kept their original epic mount still have one.

Brill

CraniusPresents 2022-12-16 | Upon encountering the town of Brill some time in the early days of WoW, I recall thinking "these are the same human buildings as in Goldshire, just broken and corrupted". I found myself wondering what Brill looked like before it was overtaken by the Plague of Undeath, and realized it probably looked very much like Goldshire. As I explored the undead areas of Azeroth, I considered what it must've been like for the citizens there to live through the events that led to the destruction of their land and people. In particular, I imagined what it must've been like to first encounter the Plague as their friends and family mysteriously died and were then transformed into undead. Later as I was poring over lore about the Plague to write this song, I discovered that Brill was one of the first places where shipments of plague-infested grain was sent and that regional defenders failed to protect the villagers and were driven out. This helped me to choose Brill for the setting of the song about the day the Plague came, and it informed my understanding of what the citizens of Brill must have gone through: They had no idea what was happening until it was too late.

I'd like to thank my lovely wife, Legs, and my son, Crowbadour, for the many hours spent putting this movie together. It wouldn't have happened without them.

"Dragonborn" is an original song based on my first complete play-through of "Skyrim", which is one of my favorite games ever. My decision on which side to support in the rebellion was actually the hardest gamer decision I've ever had to make. It literally took me days to decide and I did a lot of research to help inform that decision: Religious freedom. Racism. Politics. History. Corruption. Abuse of and thirst for power. A Rock song is pretty short though, so I distilled it down to one aspect of that decision - they tried to kill me and I wasn't on their damned list! Bitches.

Legs and I submitted this movie to the Blizzcon 2009 movie contest, and we took first place. When they played the movie on Friday night at Blizzcon, the house was packed. I was there and the reaction to the movie was better than any prize I could have won. The crowd was literally screaming by the end scene.

"Don't Make Me Get My Main" is a story about a guy who is being camped in Stranglethorn Vale while leveling an alt. He tries to convince his attacker that messing with him is a bad idea because he's a skilled PvPer. Eventually he has to logout and get his main character to come to the defense of his alt.

Last Man Standing

I was in Stranglethorn Vale scouting out locations to film a movie for the 2009 Blizzcon video contest when Short John Mithril announced the Gurubashi Arena event:

"Arrr, Me Hearties! I be havin' some extra Treasure that I be givin' away at the Gurubashi Arena! All ye need do to collect it is open the chest I leave on the arena floor!"

When I arrived, there was a Paladin and a Death Knight duking it out. I figured I'd wait until one killed the other, then jump in and finish the winner off and grab the loot. Easy right?

Well... not quite. There were a few surprises hiding in the darkness. What transpired was pretty amusing and I just had to share. While this fight was going on I just kept singing to myself "Last Man Standing!".

Our interpretation of their song is a tragedy which unfolds as you see flashbacks from the perspective of an undead warrior who recalls how he fell in love with a beautiful blood elf, a forbidden love which was unacceptable to her people. What transpires afterwards will (hopefully) chill you to the bone.

The Lament of Captain Placeholder

One tragic day when the ships in Menethil Harbor had gained the reputation of dumping their unsuspecting passengers into the ocean and sending them to a watery grave, our dear friend, Captain Placeholder, came to our rescue. He met us on the dock, more than willing to immediately and safely transport us to the farthest shores of the globe. We became accustomed to this convenience and thus Captain Placeholder earned a place in all our hearts.

Some time later when the ships were repaired, Captain Placeholder's mission had been fulfilled and he left our presence, never to be seen again.

Eledainn, Night Elf Priest of Graystar, penned this song, "The Lament of Captain Placeholder", so that we would never forget. This is my rendition of that great song. I dedicate this rendition to mariners everywhere.

Greatfather Winter

CraniusPresents 2008-12-24 | When I set out to write "Greatfather Winter", I really wanted to create a Winter Veil classic. Only time will tell if I actually achieved that, but it was a goal of mine while writing, recording, and editing. I got the idea for the song last year at this time as I was flying a reindeer over Shattrath. I took some screenshots back then for inspiration because I knew I'd be writing the song this year when those scenes were not available in-game to provide inspiration. I started writing the song several months ago, but the final verse and chorus only came together yesterday, and the video editing was an all-nighter. Fortunately, I use a very simple machinima style with no composite editing or model viewer work, and so I was able to put the video together relatively quickly.

As the snow was starting to fall, I was worried that I wouldn't be able to finish because we frequently lose power during snow storms, and when we lose power, it can be days or weeks before it comes back on. As I was almost finished, the power went out and I thought I wouldn't get it done before Christmas. Fortunately, it was a short outage, and it actually inspired me to stop the minor tweaking I was engaged in when the power went out and wrap it up. Of course, then the power went out 3 more times while trying to upload this. :)

I tried to include hints of other Christmas classics in this video. For example, the line "don't you shoot your eyeballs out" is inspired by "A Christmas Story". There are many other such references and other stylistic references as well. I encourage you to find them and reply here.

CraniusPresents 2008-12-17 | I spent many weekends in 2007 filming the Seattle rock band "Peratus" to make this music video. I had my pick of songs from their new album "Equilibrium", and "Wrought" was my choice. This was the very first song I heard them play when I showed up to that first rehearsal in their basement and I couldn't believe how lucky I was to be the only one there to hear it, camera rolling.

Highwayman Wide Screen

Here is what I had to say on my blog about the song when I released it:

My next song, "Darrowshire", was inspired by the quest in the Eastern Plaguelands. The story is a heart-breaker as you find a little girl named Pamela wandering around in the Eastern Plaguelands looking for her family. Your quest is to set things right, which my brother, Tydup, did with style while filming this movie. There are many such stories in the "World of Warcraft", some of which I've tucked away in the back of my mind to write songs about some day.

I wrote this song on vacation last summer with a Martin backpack guitar, sitting in a folding chair at the mouth of beautiful Lake Chelan in a little town called Stehekin. The town can only be reached by ferry. No Internet access or phone in the cabin where we stayed. Perfect for writing music. I highly recommend it if you need to just get away.

I had been wanting to write "Darrowshire" ever since I first experienced this quest in roughly early 2005. The little girl's story grabbed my attention, and as the song says, "will not let me go". What I didn't know was that by making the movie, I'd be exposed to lore that probably most people never see. For example, I had been trying to figure out how to create a scene where father and daughter are reunited. I figured I'd have to use the model viewer to composite this scene. What I found, however, by having to repeat the quest several times to get the necessary footage for the movie, was that the scene was already in-game - I just had to capture it. You just have to hang around town for a few minutes after completing the final stage of the quest to see it. As the movie shows, the father walks up to their home, summons Pamela, she comes running out, and the two are reunited.

Note that the 3 gnomes, Ei, Ohi, and Fahrenheit from "Big Blue Dress" are singing the backup vocals in this song too. I was planning on putting them in the movie, but when I did, they sorta trivialized the drama of the story. Don't worry though. You'll be seeing them again soon.
