This Was the Toughest Decision of My Career
updated
When you can, let the ball rise, reach the top of the bounce, and start to fall.
The ball has slowed down, your timing gets easier, and you can play it with more control.
Use your feet early so you have enough space to let that happen.
Get behind the ball. Get balanced. Get still.
We get so worried about what’s coming next that we rush the shot in front of us.
Take care of this ball first.
🔴 Red: retreat and give yourself more time and space.
🟡 Yellow: stop, split-step if you can, and get balanced to control the shot.
🟢 Green: move forward behind a ball that’s going to bounce and force your opponent to hit up.
Your partner is already there. Join them and take away open court from your opponents.
Having two players at the line is better than having one.
Why did that work? What are they trying to do? What changed when you moved your target? 🤔
Every point is giving you information. You just have to pay attention to it.

1. Start with your paddle up.
2. Keep the path short.
3. Move straight to the ball.
Less movement helps you be efficient and gives you more time to react.
You’re also dealing with the conversation in your own head.
The doubt after a miss. The frustration after a bad decision. The temptation to force something because you’re trying to make up for the last point.
#Pickleball #PickleballMindset #PickleballTraining
1. Move your opponents with your dinks.
2. Target their feet.
3. Wait for the pop-up.
4. Then attack.
Placement creates the opening that earns you the power shot.
1. Keep the ball down.
2. Aim at their feet.
3. Add pace when the ball allows it.
1. Fight to get behind the ball.
2. Become stable before contact.
3. Watch the ball through the paddle.
4. Keep a relaxed grip on softer shots.
#Pickleball #PickleballMindset
If your opponent can hit the ball near head height, that’s a red light. Stay back, create space, and get ready to defend.
Otherwise, you’re (likely) running into trouble you didn’t have to be a part of.

You may only have about 0.3 seconds before the ball is back on you, so use these 4 adjustments to react faster:
1. Keep your paddle in your peripheral vision.
2. Keep the paddle in front of your shoulder.
3. Use a tight, compact swing.
4. On backhands, turn and punch with one hand; use a core twist with two.
Less backswing means fewer timing errors.
Instead of having your paddle down by your hip like you’re taking a picture at the DMV. Have your paddle up in a ready position ready to do something!!
🔴 Red: retreat for time and space.
🟡 Yellow: stop and split-step.
🟢 Green: move forward behind a ball bouncing in the kitchen.
Read the ball, then decide where to move next.
Oh, and one more thing… If you want to discover what kind of pickleball player you naturally are, comment PERSONALITY and I’ll send you my free Pickleball Personality Test.

Return the serve. Then RUN toward the kitchen. And JOIN your partner at the line.
With you and your partner up and both opponents back, your team controls the stronger position.

1️⃣ Aim deep to the backhand.
2️⃣ Stay behind the baseline after serving.
3️⃣ Move forward only after reading the return.
Slow your walk to the ball, take an extra breath, and add another bounce before serving.
You can’t slow the rally down, but you can slow down between points. WHICH in my experience, can be more beneficial than you think!!
Your result includes:
• One of four playing styles
• Your biggest on-court superpower
• The common trap that may hold you back
• The partner styles that may fit you best
Actually, that can hurt more than it helps. If you hit a good ball that gives you time to move forward, do that.
But then, when your opponent goes to hit again, split step and prepare for the next shot. Repeat on your way into the kitchen.
Long story short, forward progress is good. Forward progress under control is better.
1. Fight to get behind the ball.
2. Become stable before contact.
3. Watch the ball through the paddle.
4. Keep a relaxed grip on softer shots.
If they hit up, more likely you’ll be able to hit down. If you hit down. You’re probably going to win the point.
It's not rocket science, even if sometimes, it feels like it. 😅
❌ Swing harder after every successful drive.
✅ Move your opponents.
✅ Target your opponents’ feet to earn a pop-up.
✅ Attack after the opening appears.
Placement creates the imbalance that makes your power more useful.
✅ Above the face: hit with pace.
✅ Below the chin: hit with spin.
1. Hold the paddle below your chin.
2. Keep your arms tucked.
3. Move forward to contact instead of back and then forward.
1. Start 1–2 feet behind the baseline.
2. Return deep through the middle.
3. Run to the kitchen.
Moving forward leaves less open court for your opponents and makes their next shot harder.

🔴 Red: retreat from a high, attackable ball.
🟡 Yellow: stop, split-step, and get ready.
🟢 Green: move forward behind a ball that will bounce.
The quality of the drop determines how much you move in (or don’t).

Pickleball tips are easy to hear and hard to remember once you're mid-rally, so here I'm narrowing it down to the 3 things that matter most: how you serve, how you return, and how hard you actually should be swinging.
If you take just these three ideas with you next time you play, you'll start winning more points by simply not beating yourself.

I brought in two of the best pickleball players in the world, Angie and Alex Walker, to break down why women's doubles looks so different from men's. We covered why women stand off the kitchen line, take bigger two-handed swings, and attack the body, plus how to handle counterattacks in mixed and the one tip every rec player needs: get the ball down first. Tons to take from this one whether you're chasing 4.5 or just love the strategy.
