Starboy | The Weeknd ft. Daft Punk | Violin Looping Pedal Cover albie 2016-12-11 | Hey all! Recently I've been listening to The Weeknd's new song (and album) on repeat, so I decided to do my usual thing and create a looping pedal cover of "Starboy." However, this time I had the opportunity to record this cover with a wireless microphone courtesy of the company, iSolo.Usually when I do looping pedal arrangements, I have to either record it on studio microphones which are not very portable, or through my violin's DI pick-up which sacrifices sound quality for convenience. With the iSolo, I found you get a nice medium between the two; you get a condenser microphone quality in a small wireless package. I can see this being super useful, especially for live performances where I want to be able to move freely on stage. Everything you hear (excluding the piano synths) were recorded with the iSolo wireless microphone. And since the song has some fairly vivid lyrics, it turned out to be perfect for this concept.For the music, I produced the cover track, featuring my friend David Kim on vocals. He told me:"Just weeks after graduating high school, one of my closest friends suffered a sudden, massive bleed in his brain that sent him into a deep coma. The bleeding was due to genetic disorder that tightened the blood vessels in his brain and caused them to burst from the increased pressure. The disease is called Moyamoya, which is the Japanese word for "puff of smoke," named so because in scans the bleeding spreads out like wispy tendrils of smoke. After two months in a coma, Carol passed away at age eighteen from an illness he didn't even know he had. These are my words to him."I was immediately on board after I heard him perform his piece. When I went to compose the music, I drew inspiration from a video by Shane Koyczan and Hannah Epperson. In their spoken word piece, "Remember When We Forgot?," Hannah accompanied Shane's voice on the violin, using a looping pedal to create the illusion of an orchestra being present. For me, I found that by using a looping pedal, we would have the intimacy of only having a single voice and violin, but be able to shape the intensity of the piece by adding and subtracting melodic layers. Later, we performed this piece live at our college and received great responses from our audience. Therefore, I thought I'd like to share that performance to a larger audience here on my channel, in the form a short film. We had so much fun setting up a fake crime scene, and then re-enacting the crime itself in this very tongue in cheek recreation of a "Sherlockian" mystery. The Hobbit - Misty Mountains Orchestral Cover albie 2012-12-29 | I've always been a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings soundtrack, so when I heard the Hobbit was also going to be made into a movie, I knew I had to play it. In order to emulate the feel of song, "Misty Mountains," sung by the dwarves in the movie, I decided to ask 12 of my friends (total of 13 - same as the number of dwarves in the book) to help me out with this project. Many, many hours later, here is our orchestral rendition performed with 6 violins, 6 cellos, and 1 cajon.
