A step-by-step online tutorial course teaching you how to paint with acrylics.
Acrylics can be the simplest and easiest way for a beginner to learn classical painting techniques with professional artist Will Kemp
Acrylics can be used in thin layers like watercolours, or in thicker, more opaque applications of paint, like oil paint. Acrylics dry quickly and can be diluted and cleaned with water, making them simple to use, odourless, and accessible to all.
In this course, Will Kemp takes you on a journey that will unleash your inner artist, providing an introduction to the materials and techniques used in acrylic painting.
The course follows a progressive sequence, covering beginner and advanced acrylic painting methods, from underpainting and glazing to impasto and textural effects. It also addresses setup and materials, colour mixing and pigment choice, brush-handling and palette-knife techniques, as well as gels and mediums.
By the end of the course you'll have a final still-life project you can hang with pride, and a solid foundation of painting knowledge, making the transition into more challenging subjects or mediums much easier.
Topics Include: Choosing a brush, palette, and canvas Altering acrylic paint with water and other mediums Blocking in and underpainting Adding glazes Choosing pigments Understanding basic colour theory Creating texture Signing and protecting your work

Market Day Peaches Acrylic Painting Course. Easy-to-follow single-project courses; you can complete them in just a few 1hr painting sessions.
Each one follows the same approach. A single painting from start to finish. A limited colour palette. A handful of brushes. A small canvas. A simple subject. 4 x short lessons (under 45-minutes each) I’ve taken all the principles of a traditional still life but kept the composition informal.
This subject has expanded from the first simple modern still-life painting course of a jug and three pears; we’re now introducing folded fabric, adding glass, a vase of flowers and a bowl.
We’ll cover the preparation of your surface & drawing out, mixing colour strings and blocking in.
So although we are expanding our horizons a little bit, the course has been designed with simple learning blocks—clear step-by-step instructions to keep you on track.
We’ll only use six colours, including white, and if you’ve been following some of my other courses, you will already have most, if not all, of the colours.
The focus of this piece is those beautiful colourful peaches, but I’ve designed the lessons, so you approach them last.
We start with just two colours, looking at the subtle shifts between the cools and warms, building up the shadows and shapes so that when we get to the peaches, and you extend your palette, all of a sudden they’ll come together so real because you’ve spent the time doing all the supporting work up to that stage. (The counterintuitive approach for this painting is to spend more time with the first stages to balance our form and tones.)
So find a comfy seat, grab a brew and a biscuit and let’s get painting!
Morning class, I’m Will Kemp and welcome to Market Day Peaches Still life.
PAINTING TUTORIAL for beginners. ‘The Morning Paintings’ are designed to be easy-to-follow single-project courses; you can complete them in just a few 1hr painting sessions.
Each one follows the same approach. A single painting from start to finish. A limited colour palette. A handful of brushes. A small canvas. A simple subject. 4 x short lessons (under 45-minutes each)
I recently came home from the local market with these amazing-tasting peaches and just dropped them in a bowl on the kitchen table, and they looked good enough to paint. The placement felt more casual, like a snapshot of everyday life, which inspired this painting.
In this third short course, I’ve taken all the principles of a traditional still life but kept the composition informal.
This subject has expanded from the first simple modern still-life painting course of a jug and three pears; we’re now introducing folded fabric, adding glass, a vase of flowers and a bowl.

Morning class, I’m Will Kemp and welcome to A Cornish Seascape.
PAINTING TUTORIAL for beginners. ‘The Morning Paintings’ are designed to be easy-to-follow single project courses; you can complete them in just a few 1hr painting sessions.
Each one follows the same approach.
A single painting from start to finish. A limited colour palette. A handful of brushes. A small canvas. A simple subject. Taught over 3 x 45-minute lessons.
I’ve started this series because sometimes you can find yourself overthinking the end result of a painting, and the pressure of having to make it a masterpiece can keep you from even starting!
I find setting aside 1hr every morning really helps overcome this feeling of being overwhelmed; in this second short course, we’re tackling a glittering seascape from the south coast of Cornwall.
This course has been designed with small, bite-sized lessons; you’ll be building your knowledge and your painting without the task becoming too much. I’m keeping it very simple with just a handful of materials, but we’ll still get a good range of mixes even using a minimal palette.
In this seascape, the two sailboats give us a great focal point; they also provide a real sense of scale. Having a contrasting focal point against a smooth blend of a sky and cooler softer tones of the far hills sends your eye into the distance. Framed by contrasting values of dark rocks, set against the gradation of the depth of tones within the sea creates realism.
We’ll cover the preparation of your surface & drawing out, mixing colour strings and blocking-in. Starting with just two colours, showing how important it can be to get a grounding in your painting, establishing a tonal range so you can start to judge everything from that initial set-up.
I’m super excited about this new course because it's an easy-to-follow single project course. that you can complete in just a few 1 hr painting sessions.
Each one will follow the same approach:
A single painting from start to finish. A limited colour palette. A handful of brushes. A small 8 x 10 canvas. A simple subject.
Taught over 3 x 45-minute lessons.
In this first course, I’ve taken all the principles from a traditional still life composition but kept it simple and contemporary. You’ll learn classical principles that are the building blocks of all great old master paintings.
We’ll cover the preparation of your surface & drawing out, mixing colour strings and blocking-in, and how to create the illusion of a three-dimensional shape by observing the cast and form shadows. We’ll understand the importance of harmonious colour and adding texture to the surface to control the viewer’s gaze.
It’s been kept to be really really simple, like when we paint the pears, we only use two colours for most of it, and then adding a few extra little magic bits of glazing just to give you a little zing of the end.
So find a comfy seat, a strong cup of coffee or a pot of tea, and see what can be achieved in a 1-hour painting slot, thoroughly engage in the process.
How to loosen up your acrylic painting, how to paint fast and loose with Acrylics. In the second part, we approach the painting without pre-mixing the colours using our intuition and being a bit looser with our brush marks I've used a limited palette and simple painterly techniques with just two brushes and four colours.
Morning class, this week we're going to look at how to paint fast and loose with your acrylics in this two-part apple study. I get lots of emails from students who want to develop a more painterly impressionistic style but find when using a photo reference; they get too obsessed with the details, and the whole piece gets a bit overworked.
So in the first lesson of this two-part still life, I approach the drawing out of our apples in a bit more detail. The method I demonstrate is sometimes called 'Envelope Drawing' and is an approach that helps you to draw something more accurately.
We take more time with the drawing so we can paint quicker in the next painting lesson.
Morning class! This week I’ve launched a brand new downloadable Absolute Beginners Water-Mixable Oil Video Course, designed to help aspiring oil painters understand the theory and practice of painting in water-mixable oils.
If the thought of using traditional oil paints, cleaning up your brushes with strong-smelling solvents in a small room just isn’t practical – you might find that Water-Mixable Oils are a perfect balance – the blending time of oils with the super easy clean up of water.
Water-mixable oils are real oil paints, they have a lovely buttery consistency, a long working time which enables you to make changes over a longer period of time, blending colours, adjusting shapes, or working wet-into-wet with thick impasto marks.
They can be mixed with water, low odour mediums or natural drying oils. So if you paint in an enclosed space without good ventilation or you’ve developed a sensitivity to turpentine, working in a fume-free painting environment makes water-mixable oils really appealing.

Amongst the copious footage, I wanted to share an introductory lesson where I compare the dilution of acrylics to water-mixable oils.
Simple but fundamental observations.
You may find there are times when acrylics dry off too quickly or are difficult to blend especially when you're painting in thin layers. Using water-mixable oil's can be fantastic because they give you that extra working time. Painting wet-into-wet is one of the significant advantages you’ll notice because you gain a lot more time for smoking together colours.
So in this video, I paint a graduated sky, blending really thin applications looking at the differences between diluting with water and then a medium.

Morning class, I’m Will Kemp from Will Kemp art school and this week we’re taking inspiration from around your home.
In this beginner acrylic tutorial, I go through the steps of how I think through my colour composition from choosing the coloured ground to introducing the pigments to slowly building up the piece.
I really liked this little collection of terracotta pots, they were part of a cottage garden potting shed I’d visited recently and I loved how it had the strong orange of the terracotta next to the muted oranges of the red brick which was then broken up by the cool greens on the leaves.
On the website, I’ve got an article that talks through the thought process of how I approach this piece and a reference image you can work along from but for now let’s grab a brew and any remaining biscuits you’ve got left and let’s get painting.
You might have always wanted to capture the corner of your sunlit living room or an interesting collection of books stacked up on your coffee table or a section of your garden or patio with all the vibrant greens and spring colours
But when faced with a new painting subject, where do you begin?
How do you decide on the pigments to use or what’s important to focus on?
The tendency can be to just get started and ‘work it out’ as you go along.
But without adopting a systematic approach to your painting, you can be faced with frustration with your colour mixing, wasted time on your drawing and an unsatisfying end result, I want to show you an easier way.

When I’m walking around the streets of any new town or city, I always carry a small sketchbook in my backpack and a couple of tonal sketching pens, trying to keep my kit as simple and minimal as possible.
I was walking through the old town of Bastia when I came across this beautiful tranquil garden with these fabulous ornamental pillars and wrought iron gates.
Often when you're out on location, you develop a series of drawings that build on each other. So I did a quick 15-minute plein air black pen drawing to get the information down in my sketchbook, and then when I got back to my studio, I spent more time developing a sepia pen sketch and working up a watercolour
The pens I use for this sketch are:

Yes, although the lessons are with acrylics, the colour theory is exactly the same for oil painting and the process of creating the paintings is very similar.
Is there a time-limit to the class?
No, it’s a self-paced class, there isn’t a time-limit to the lessons, once purchased they are yours to keep forever.
I purchased your first version of the colour mixing course, what’s changed in this one?
The colour mixing theory sections are exactly the same so you wouldn’t need to purchase the course again but there are 4 x brand new still life painting tutorials.

The video tutorial looks at how you can combine a monochrome underpainting with colour glazes to create a luminosity in your acrylic paintings. We’ll keep the freshness of the piece by building up layers of clear transparent glazes and all we going to be using is 5 paints and a couple of brushes.
I’ll be using a stay-wet palette to hold my tonal colour string mixes in, and then any leftover colours from the painting, can go back in there ready for my next piece.
You can download the reference image below to work along from, so grab a brew (maybe a couple of biscuits) and let’s get painting!
The new Floral Still Life Acrylic Painting Course is now available!
I’ve developed this course to show you how you can transfer the feeling of simplicity and light into a studio floral still life by the arrangement of colours, composition and tonal value range.
Taking classical painting techniques to build up an in-direct painting in acrylics you’ll create a more contemporary still life painting that allows you to use a light modern palette and still see good three-dimensional form.
Really hope you enjoy the course! Will

Morning class, this week we’re looking at comparing the similarities and differences between Water-Mixable Oils vs Traditional Oils.
If you like the idea of trying oil paints but the practicalities of cleaning up your brushes with solvents are out of the question, then painting with water soluble oils might be the answer.
You could paint in a small room without good ventilation or you've had to stop using traditional oils due to skin sensitivities or asthma.
How about a real oil paint that can be mixed with water or natural drying oils and cleaned with soap and water. Long working time, soft blends, buttery consistency, solvent-free oil painting and a super easy cleanup.
Mmm, sounds too good to be true, so what's the catch?
In this video, I show how to use water based oils and the different handling properties between water-mixable oil paints and traditional oil paints and demonstrate some best practices for achieving great results if you're a beginner to oils.
I demonstrate with Duo-Aqua water mixable oils from Holbein, and I'm using Permanent White, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, and Ultramarine Light. And in the traditional oils, I'm using Titanium white, Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna and Ultramarine Deep.
Morning class, this week I've been in Mallorca soaking up the scenery and enjoying painting outside. I found this secluded tree within a lemon grove that I thought would work well as a little Plein air sketch tutorial with acrylics.
I’ve developed this acrylic painting course inspired by a Venetian Sunset to help guide you through the process of moving from small-scale to large-scale acrylic paintings.
What will the Impressionistic Light & the Landscape course cover?
1x large-scale finished painting of a Venice Sunset taking you step-by-step from drawing right through to the final glazes. 3 x small supporting studies to practice your techniques and refine your vision.
The course is studio based and split into 8 downloadable video lessons, with each lesson made up of separate chapters that follow on sequentially.
There are reference images jpegs and drawing worksheets to work alongside from, including a mapped out grid for scaling up your drawing, black and white print outs and full material list.
Each portrait tutorial looks at a different complexion and builds progressively so by the end of this course, you’ll be creating realistic luminous portraits and have a really great understanding of how to utilise glazing in your own portrait practice.
The course is split into 18 downloadable video lessons, with each lesson made up of separate chapters that follow on sequentially.
I’ve taken care to film everything from my perspective so I could ensure you can see exactly what I’m doing as we go through the entire portrait process in real time giving nearly 6 hours of video instruction, alongside full-colour photographs and drawing guides. How to Paint an Impressionistic Snowscene in Acrylics - (Part 2 of 2) HDwillkempartschool2016-02-29 | http://willkempartschool.com/how-to-paint-a-snowscene-in-acrylic Part 2 of 2 Snow. Ever felt frustrated having worked so hard on a painting -- only to find it still looks 'flat'?
Is it the proportions? The perspective? Perhaps the composition?
Whilst these all play an integral part, the most effective method of making your drawings appear three dimensional, is understanding how light logic works.
If line drawing creates the proportions, handling of tone creates the form.
The theory seems simple and the changes in technique small, but applying the principles of how tone, light and shade work, will improve the illusion of form in every drawing you do -- regardless of the subject.
And the exciting part about it is, once you 'get' lighting, the principles never change.
In Part 2 of this 2 Part painting video demonstration we look at the theory, the drawing and then paint a simple form focusing on shadow, light and edges.
