Most parts are junk ā but I want to save the core board. I've already done 2 board transplants with different donor boards ā neither worked. There are some scratches on the CPU and eMMC. I'm sending you the whole mess plus a good bottom board. Please see if there's any hope ā keep whatever you can." šThat's the message we got from a fellow repair technician. He's persistent ā two transplant attempts is serious effort. But the Air 3S was a complete disaster from the start.His journey:š§ Step 1 ā The purchaseBought a crashed, waterādamaged Air 3S on Xianyu (China's secondāhand marketplace). The shell was cracked, gimbal dead, motors seized ā but the core board looked okay.š§ Step 2 ā First transplantMoved the core board to a knownāgood donor drone. No power.š§ Step 3 ā Second transplantTried again with another donor board/drone combination. Still no power.š§ Step 4 ā InspectionNoticed scratches on the CPU and eMMC ā possibly from the crash or mishandling. Sent it to us with a good bottom board (the one with the ESC/charging circuitry) for further testing.What we found:š CPU pads ā visually okayWe put the core board under the microscope. The scratches on the CPU and eMMC were superficial ā no missing pads, no ripped traces on the main chip.š Power delivery ā completely deadWe tested the voltage rails step by step:Rail Expected Measured StatusVCC (main power) ~3.8V 0V ā Dead5V rail ~5.0V 0V ā Dead3.3V rail ~3.3V 0V ā Dead1.8V rail ~1.8V 0V ā DeadNo power anywhere. Not even standby voltage.š Root cause ā likely internal damageWithout visible shorts or blown components, the most likely scenario is internal damage to the main processor or power management IC ā possibly from the water damage or impact. These chips are multilayer BGA packages ā damage can be internal and invisible.Verdict:This core board is beyond repair. No power, no voltage rails, no signs of life. Even with a knownāgood bottom board, it won't boot. Air 3: Fellow Tech Killed Two Boards ā We Resurrected Both šš§ JANGYAO 2026-08-24 | "I'm a repair tech too ā and I just killed two Air 3 core boards. I was trying to fix the vision pairing by moving data from a locked board to a working board. Now neither one powers on. Please help ā I'll pay anything." šThat's the message we got from a fellow repair technician. He was trying to solve an Air 3 vision issue ā the drone wouldn't pair with the vision sensors, likely due to mismatched calibration data. His plan was smart: move the calibration data from a locked board to a good board.But the execution was a disaster.His plan (and where it went wrong):š§ Step 1 ā The theoryVision calibration data is stored on the core board. If you have a board with good vision data but a locked/broken main processor, you could theoretically move that data to a working board to fix the vision issue.š§ Step 2 ā The executionHe started flying wires (jumper wires) between the two boards ā trying to transfer the data directly.š§ Step 3 ā The disasterHis soldering wasn't precise enough. He overheated and burned multiple resistors on the signal lines. Shorts were created. Power rails were compromised. Both boards died.The locked board ā now even more dead.The good board ā now also dead.He sent both to us with a simple request: "Save them."What we did:š Step 1 ā Isolate the damageWe put both boards under the microscope. The burned resistors were easy to spot ā but we also had to trace whether the damage had spread to the CPU or other ICs.š Step 2 ā Reāsolder the broken connectionsWe removed his damaged work, cleaned the pads, and reāsoldered the resistors with proper temperature control.š Step 3 ā Test each boardThe locked board: power restored ā still locked, but now functional (can be used as a donor or reprogrammed)The good board: power restored ā fully working, vision data intactš Step 4 ā Final verificationBoth boards powered on. The good board was returned to full working condition. The locked board was recoverable for future use.The drone is back in the air.
