117jamesYep, that's right. It's finally over. After over two and half long awaited years, I have finally made the fabled DS Desert Hills Ultra Shortcut. But it wasn’t easy. Let’s go back to where it started, in April 2022.
As some of you know, I started playing the game in March 2022, and like any new player, I was not good at the game. However, MKW’s ultra shortcuts always fascinated me and I wanted to give the rDH (Retro Desert Hills) glitch a shot. At the time, I had no idea what I was getting myself into, and I had no idea how hard this shortcut actually was. On April 27th, 2022, I started to figure out how to bounce off the red pole the correct way, and not long after that, I had gotten my first ever OOB (Out of Bounds) Bounce. At that time, I thought that attempt was quite close, and I actually thought that it would only take a week or two to successfully pull off the glitch. Boy was I wrong. Through May and into June, I continued to attempt the glitch, getting OOB bounce after OOB bounce. On June 13th, 2022, I got my first high bounce. Unfortunately, the angle was too far left, making it impossible for a successful lap count. Not long after that, I started to lose motivation, realizing the glitch was probably a lot harder than I had previously expected. In mid september, I returned to the glitch, wanting to make it to 50 OOB Bounces, and once I did, I made an update video. Not long after, I learned more about how getting a “high bounce” works. It requires a nearly frame perfect taildive or neutral input roughly 15-20 frames before landing, followed by a frame perfect hop. Even with the correct inputs however, it’s still super rare to get, as it entirely comes down to QM (luck) at that point. You can expect a high bounce on average about 1 in 25 normal OOB Bounces. On November 10th, after weeks of applying these new inputs, I finally got another high bounce, however it crossed backwards into checkpoint 55. As it turns out, the angle required to stay in checkpoint 0 (required for a lap count) is STUPID precise. There were many instances in which I thought I had stayed in CP0, even though I had actually not. The area of the angle needed can vary but typically it is like the image shown at 1:34 . So what I knew at the time is you must land in a very small area on the horizontal axis. What I had not known at the time, however, was that you also need to land in a very precise and specific place on the vertical axis as well. At 1:34, the red line indicates exactly where you MUST land in order for a lap count. Many of my high bounces in late 2022 and early 2023 failed, due to nosediving far too early, making a lap count impossible even if I did stay in CP0, and I would soon find this out. On January 31st, 2023, I finally had a high bounce that stayed in checkpoint 0. Unfortunately, It did not have enough distance on the bounce and did not land in the right area. Despite this, I still got the correct respawn which baffled me. Soon after that, lowercaseletters pointed out that that attempt had actually counted as a “glitch” run on CTGP. I stayed in CP0, and bounced into CP54 like you’re supposed to, but due to the 95% rule, The lap did not count. In April 2023, I finally got Dolphin to work, and I was able to test and mess around with the rDH glitch. I discovered that the 95% rule was very, very precise with this glitch in particular. In order to get a lap count, it requires a perfect angle and bounce. After the OOB bounce, you have to land on the very backside of the final key checkpoint (CP54), otherwise the game counts you as skipping more than 95% of the track and the lap will not count. The further to the left you are in CP0 (the most lap completion), the easier it is to obey the 95% rule. With this knowledge, I finally understood the full potential of this glitch and how hard it truly was, which was quite the demotivator. Getting the perfect angle and perfect bounce, while very possible, seemed so incredibly hard to do all in one run. You would need a miracle to get everything needed in one run. In mid to late 2023, I didn’t spend much time on the glitch, but I did get better at the game, which would help my attempts in the future. In January 2024, I returned to the glitch. Over the span of 3 weeks, I got 2 high bounces, one in CP0. Unfortunately, I landed too far forward on the vertical axis, and the high bounce actually would have bounced directly past CP54. Once again, I realized how hard this actually was and stepped away from the time being. In May, I came back, and spent another 3 weeks on the glitch, this time not getting much at all. Once again, I came back in august for 2 weeks and despite getting many OOB bounces, a lot of which stayed in CP0, I was not fortunate enough to get any high bounces.

Clearly many mistakes. The ghost in this video is my best pace, which could've been a 48 and WW tops but unfortunately landed too far right on the lap 3 glitch. I might go for WW tops but I'm not sure if I should do the new lap one strat, its kind of hard.
This run is 11th Worldwide and 8th American at the time of recording. Nice.

Lap 1 | 28.427 - Any lap under 28.5 is a really good lap. I was very surprised that this clip made it far enough. Usually, if you have to adjust mid-air like I did you don't get a good bounce off the rail, which gives a worse clip. On top of that, it also gives you a less-optimal angle, which requires more distance to make it across the gap. Both respawns were on par with what I am expecting for my runs. I FINALLY aligned good for the lap two straight. An easy time save over my previous fast laps. Solid lap.
Lap 2 | 53.613 - mehhhhhh. Happy to finally get a good straight, and on top of that I was able to split between the two thwomps in the big room. Driving after the big room was sub-optimal, and I had to go wide on the turn before the bridge because I was fast enough where the sliding thwomp is a big problem. Got a bounce on the stair turn causing me to mis the MT upon landing, though I was able to get the wheelie. This is probably the main time loss in this lap. good U-turn, and decent ending besides a few micro-adjustments. I'm always expecting my lap 2 to be slower than my lap 3 due to both more obstacles in the way, and more nerves after hitting a fast glitch.
Lap 3 | 53.251 - Average. This lap was driven very well despite a few adjustments up until the stair turn. I didn't get bounces on the stair turn, but unfortunately missed the wheelie despite getting the MT. good U-turn. Pretty decent ending besides once again some wheelie turns. My current PBS is 52.945. The best no glitch lap I have hit in a glitch run is a 53.015.
This run is only a few small mistakes away from being the 2:14 More to come soon :) (hopefully)

I have plenty to say about what has transpired in the last month or so, and I may have told some of you personally, but I do plan on writing up something large summing it up once I get the 2:14.
As for the run itself, well, obviously I am not satisfied with it. Good glitch, slow-ish post-glitch lap one. Terrible first straight on lap 2, though it was better than my former WR. Driving was good lap two up until the stairs, where I missed the wheelie, but oh well. Rest of the lap was decent besides a bad landing on the rail and wide rail-cut. I think you can tell just by watching lap 3 that I was struggling quite a bit with nerves. the beginning of the driving lap 3 was very bad. I nearly hit the sliding thwomp as well. Bad stair turn once again, but the rest of the lap was ok besides yet another bad rail landing and wide rail-cut. Though this is not the run that I want, I am still happy that I was finally able to get the first 2:15 here. There is definitely more to come, and I am positive this run will not last long, as either myself or the other talented rBC players will soon top this. The end goal is now in sight. the 2:14 will come soon. My splits give 2:14.2, so it is very doable. Thank you everyone for your continued support.
Music: Flashing Lights by Kanye West: youtube.com/watch?v=ZAz3rnLGthg【Former WR】N64 Bowsers Castle (Glitch) - 2:16.222117james2025-01-09 | Shoutout to @idk_maniac for implementing the railcut into Spear Time Trials! Maniac has been making some insane progress on both the Spear no-glitch BKT here, as well as getting closer to a glitch run of his own. This run would not be possible without the amazing work Maniac has done. He recently got the first 2:36 no glitch with spear, definitely worth checking out to see the potential of spear no glitch laps.
I have been trying to learn and understand how the railcut works with spear on and off since November, yet I still could not make it consistently at all. That was until yesterday. Yesterday, I found out I had been too aggressive with the spin drift, which always caused me to fail. fixing this issue has allowed me to start to become much more consistent with the tech, and today I think I was hitting it almost every time. Railcut alone saves between 400 and 500 ms, so a large improvement is quite easy when implemented. This is the 3rd glitch I've made since returning. Unfortunately, the previous two were faster, yet I failed the respawn boost on lap 1 BOTH times. Each of these 3 glitches could've been a new BKS lap one, but as you saw, even this one had it's own problem. Unfortunately, I missed the final MT on lap one, costing roughly 300 ms. If this wasn't worse enough, on the following lap 2 straightaway, I had a terrible chain wheelie which caused me to need to wheelie turn to correct my line, this also costed roughly 300 ms. The rest of lap 2 was decent, with a suboptimal stair turn, and a bounce when landing on the rail. Because of railcut, I then returned to almost even with my former WR. Railcut turned a disaster of a lap 2 into an alright one. And then I actually ended up gaining on the former WR on the following parts of lap 3. The 431 ms. time cut you see here is pretty much just the result of adding on railcut onto an already decent lap. a 53.390 is the no glitch lap I have hit in a run, but my best ever (PBS) shroomless lap I have hit (this was actually today too lol) is a 52.958, which is really really good. Adding railcut, my splits now give a high 2:14. My current goal is just to get a mid to high 2:15, but in the future I do hope to get a 2:14. Expect more improvements soon. :)

After a half hearted attempt at picking up some random ng track, I quickly found myself back to rBC. I knew that the rBC WR was still up for grabs, so I really wanted to improve it. I set the goal of a 2:16, though I wasn't sure how easy it would be. After some messing around in dolphin, I found that 2:16 was slightly pacelocked due to the thwomps on lap 3. At first, I didn't think I would be able to beat the pacelock, however over the following weeks, I improved my ng driving by a large amount. I quickly found myself easily hitting 53.7 laps, with my best being a 53.4! With this driving, I knew I could beat the lap 3 pacelock. I also tried to align for my glitches as fast as possible, which resulted in faster lap ones at the cost of missing the pole very often, which was kind of annoying. There was a week where I almost completely lost my curb-hop consistency, and on top of that I went 124 pole hits without a highclip, which was very unlucky (my normal clip rates are roughly 1 in 25). Despite this frustration, I did not give up. Just one of those thing you have to power through. I went on to hit the thwomp on lap 3 two times. Last week, I drove a 28.909 53.605, which is the current BKP (The ghost raced in the video), and also beat the pacelock lap 3. Unfortunately, I hit the grass after the very precise stair U-turn. As I went on, I kept getting more and more consistent with my driving, and I knew it was only a matter of time before I would finish a monster run. Thankfully, that run came just a short while later. While this run wasn't on as great of a pace as the BKP, it had much better lap 3 driving which made up for it. I am so happy with the result.
Lap 1: 28.852 - Very solid. We are finally starting to reach the limit of glitch lap ones. I think the lowest it can go is like 28.5 with perfect alignment and perfect respawn strats. I aligned quite fast, and the following respawn and turnaround were decent. The final respawn and trick were average, but I finally didn't bounce when landing from the final trick which saved a lot of time. Really nice lap one, a new flap WR by under 50 ms.
Lap 2: 53.808 - Decent. This lap had a very well driven beginning, up until the stairs. Though I did get the MT into the stairs, I did not get a wheelie, which lost some time. The rest of the lap was below average. Bad bridge turn, and a bad spiral. As you saw with the ghost comparison, this lap was easily on pace to be a 53.7 or lower. Definitely room for improvement.
Lap 3: 53.993 - Not Ideal. Decent beginning driving. Once again missed the wheelie on the stairs, and the following U-turn was below average. The rest of the lap was below average because I played it pretty safe. Definitely a lot of room for improvement
Overall, I am quite happy with this run, and I'll probably step away from the track for at least a little while. In the future, I plan on taking it to a low to mid 2:15 by implementing the final rail cut, which saves around 450 ms. Thanks a lot everyone who's stuck with me through this!
As for the glitch, I know I said its much easier with my setup, but I want to rephrase that. While the actual barrel roll itself is just as hard as it used to be, my method just takes a lot of the luck factor away from the glitch, which makes it possible to have enough distance on every high clip. This is because with the old method you needed to get a really lucky bounce before the clip in order to get a clip that makes it far enough. Due to my setup, you always reach the pole going max speed, as well as more bike tilt from holding a down-input longer, which both increase clip height. Thanks everyone!
Controller: Nunchuk Date Set: November 5th, 2024 Name: 117james Ghost:【Former WR】 N64 Bowsers Castle (Glitch) - 2:17.369117james2024-10-07 | I started playing this game less than 3 years ago, in 2022. I got my first world wide tops in January 2024. Even then, if you would've told me I would eventually hold my very own World Record, I would've thought you were crazy. MKW's Ultra Shortcuts were what brought me to this game, and not only have I pulled off every single one possible thus far, I have also achieved a record on a global scale.
One fateful night in mid September, I found myself watching Logan's WR run of 2:17.997 for some reason. Before that point, I guess I just assumed his run was near perfect, like most of his are. But then, I noticed key mistakes that not only could be improved upon, but I could improve upon. Obviously I knew I could improve the glitch lap one, due to the way I set up the glitch (roughly 400-500 ms faster). As for Logan's Lap two (53.783), though the first half of the lap is near perfect, the rest of the lap after the U-turn could be pretty easily improved by more than 300 ms. The biggest time save however, was of course lap three. Unfortunately, Logan had to slow down immensely to avoid the offroad on the lap three U-turn. With all of this said, I had a new goal in mind. I was going to go for the 3Lap World Record.
Most of my time in the beginning was spent practicing driving, which involved both RTA practice, and section-specific practice in dolphin. I was able to lower my average lap time from a 54.4 to a 54.0 (towards the end of the grind I was in the high 53 range with ease). To this day the best lap I have hit is a 53.713 . Once I was confident in my no-glitch laps, I started real attempts. My first minor goal was to get 2nd Worldwide. On Saturday, September 22nd, I got my first high clip of the grind. Unfortunately, I messed up the following shroom timing which ultimately made me fall short of the proper checkpoint to land in. I corrected this lap to a 29.3 . On September 25th, I finished a 2:18.726 (2nd WW), starring a new flap world record of 29.672 . I was very excited about this at the time, as it was my first ever flap WR, but I still wasn't finished. I made a glitch on September 27th, starring a 29.888 lap one, however I hit the offroad on lap 3 after a very well driven lap 2. The next week of attempts would turn out to be very crazy. Fortunately, I had a decent amount of free time despite college and had a few hours each night to play. On October 1st, I hit a new flap WR of 29.307. Unfortunately I got some unlucky QM on a well driven lap 2 and later hit the wall on lap 3 due to a combination of nerves and not remembering the thwomp cycles. This fail haunted me at the time (real ones in Owen's server know). The nerves I feel on a strong WR pace are unbelievable, which is what caused driving well on a run to be so hard for me. The next day, I hit a glitch, but unfortunately I played the respawn too aggressive and missed the normal checkpoint required to hit the final KCP. I then proceeded to drive a PBS lap 2 directly after (which made me die inside). The following day, THE SAME THING HAPPENED. On Friday, October 4th, I had a lot of time on my hands. For whatever reason, My high clip luck was insane. I hit 4 high clips (3 made glitches) in ONE day, on only about 25 pole hits. Each of these runs failed. one started off with another flap WR of 29.231, and then hit the wall on laps 2 and 3. The second run was on a very promising WR pace into lap 3 (less than 50 ms behind logan heading into lap 3) unfortunately I barely clipped the thwomp on lap 3, and then proceeded to drive well enough to almost beat my PB at the time. The final glitch of the day was once again a new flap WR of 29.213. Unfortunately, I got a slip drift out of my control on the bridge lap 2, causing me to fall off into the lava. At this point, I was mentally about ready to give up on this goal. With the support of everyone in Owen Smith's server, I regained motivation. On Saturday, October 5th, I once again had a lot of time on my hands to play MKW. I started off the day with a glitch not long into my session. Unfortunately, I aligned pretty slow for the glitch which resulted in a lap with not much WR potential at all. Even more unfortunately, I drove very very good after this glitch, resulting in a new PB of 2:18.609 despite such a slow lap one.
At this point, I had already made the glitch TEN times. the fact that I hadn't succeeded in a run despite the number of glitches really demotivated me. I got pole hit, after pole hit, after pole hit. My high clip rate was normally about 1 in 20, however I was on quite the high clip drought. It took 46 pole hits to get the run shown in this video. In total, I hit the pole 287 times, with 15 high clips, and 11 made glitches (which is as much as how many times everyone else has made the glitch COMBINED). More about the run in the pinned comment :)
Total Time: 2:17.369 Lap 1: 29.203 Lap 2: 53.952 Lap 3: 54.214
Hoping to hit a low 29 second glitch lap and then close out the run with two low 54 second no glitch laps for WR.

I've never really liked glitches that were very luck based, which is why I stayed away from rSL glitch until the new alignment strategy. Though this is widely considered the hardest 3-lap glitch in the game, the majority of your success comes down to luck. That being said, I did have quite the interesting experience when I first tried this glitch. For the longest time I did not at all understand how the barrel roll bounce works. I even struggled to TAS this glitch. One day on Logan's stream, he expressed how much easier the rBC glitch is now if you hold down before the clip, so I tried TASing it again. after about 30 minutes of trying, I was able to get a BRB (Barrel Roll Bounce) that got me over the railing. After practicing it a little more, I started RTA attempts. Within 15 minutes, I had my first pole hit, my first opportunity. Coming into this, I was expecting a clip rate of less than 5%, however to my surprise I got a perfect high clip first try. While getting a high clip was INCREDIBLY lucky, it was just as much unlucky. Unfortunately, due to it being my first high clip, I did not have the muscle memory for after the clip on lock. So, as you saw, my first pole hit, and thus first high clip resulted in a fail due to me not holding right after the clip. Think about how insane that is: I had the opportunity to make the game's hardest 3-lap glitch, in just 15 minutes of attempts. It's safe to say that I learned a valuable lesson with that fail: always be prepared for the unexpected. Following this fail, I continued to try, but I had problems with BRB consistency, so I tried to fix this issue by learning the normal slow barrel roll strat that EVERYONE else used. After hours of testing in dolphin and consulting logan, zoren, and others, I finally figured it out. Following that I switch to using the slow BR strat. On tuesday, I got my 2nd high clip, on my 24th pole hit. Unfortunately, slow BR has its own problem: there is potential to get a high clip without making it to the max speed (116kmh) for a clip. The reason why this clip failed was because it only clipped at 114kmh, resulting in a clip with much less distance. Following this, I switched back to fast BR, hoping that my next high clip would be the one I would make glitch on. Thankfully this was the case. On my 54th pole hit, I got a clip, and this time I actually held right!!!!!!! Though some players have problems with crossing backwards and getting an NLC, I knew 100% that this would count the lap, because of this: Due to holding down before the clip, you can get an insane amount of clip heigh and thus distance (discovered and implemented by Logan). So, I used this factor to my advantage and positioned myself farther left than you are supposed to on the railing. Typically, this would make it harder to make it all the way to the checkpoint, but with holding down before the clip, landing back in the checkpoint was free. The reason I positioned further left is because it 100% eliminates the chance of crossing backwards. I finished the lap, which ended up being a 30.325 (2nd Worldwide). I should've easily been able to get 2nd worldwide, but I played the driving on the rest of the track very safe. The last turn in lap 3 costed roughly .4 on its own. Thankfully, there wasn't any major mistakes, however there were many minor mistakes that added up and costed a lot of time in the run. Overall I am not super satisfied with this run, and I plan on playing this in the future for either flap WR or 2nd worldwide. my high clip rate ended up being 5.5% or 1 in 18, which is very good compared to others (Logan's was 1 in 39, or 2.5%). I have now done the 3 hardest ultra shortcuts in the game, and now I plan to become the 5th player ever to make every ultra in the game. As of now, I still need RR, rPB, rSGB. I tried this glitch multiple times in 2023 and 2024, and I never really understood how it worked. Even after I got dolphin in April 2023, I still couldn't even TAS the shortcut, which was very strange because I could TAS many other ultras that are considered harder than this. My RTA attempts always had one main problem, if I did get the HWG bypass off the banner, 90% of the time it would result in a very high and far bounce that would fly much farther than the needed distance, making the glitch impossible. I never understood why I was having this problem. I never thought that the problem was my shroom timing. I thought that my shroom boost ran out completely before hitting the banner, but as you saw in the video, I was wrong. Zoren and Hunter helped me realize what I was doing wrong. Once I changed my shroom timing, I instantly had success. I got my first spot hit only an hour after Zoren coming into my stream chat. In the sessions that followed I got 2 more spot hits. On August 20th, I got another spot hit but this time timed the frame perfect hop. Unfortunately, the lap didn't count likely due to crossing the finish line backwards. Later that same night, I once again streamed some more attempts, and after about an hour and a half, I got the glitch that resulted in this run. Mind blown. The glitch lap itself was pretty much what I was expecting. I can't believe I was able to adjust my angle so well midair for the lap count. The two no-glitch laps that followed were a true cherry on top of the nice glitch lap. I cannot believe I drove so smoothly under pressure and didn't make any mistakes. The only major driving mistake is on the half-pipe section on lap 3. I would've been devastated if I hit the pipe there. Overall, I am so happy and surprised I was able to make this glitch after thinking I never would -- I think it's clear how low my confidence was with it before Zoren came into my stream chat. Also, I was not expecting to drive so good after making such a tough shortcut. I was only going for American tops which is a 1:45 or lower, but man, I am so happy with how much better it turned out. Seriously, I cannot thank Zoren and Hunter enough. without them this would've never happened. I now have two worldwide top times, sweet.
This grind took about 12 hours, but if you count all the other times I tried this glitch it would be closer to 30 if I had to guess. Definitely easier than KC glitch.
Music: "For Whom The Bell Tolls" by Metallica youtube.com/watch?v=B_HSa1dEL9s[4th Worldwide] Koopa Cape (Glitch) - 2:02.171117james2024-07-22 | After my 2:05 I knew I could do a lot better if I was able to get my no-glitch laps under control. I decided I would come back one day and get 3rd worldwide. On July 2nd, that day came. I spent most my time in the beginning trying to perfect my no glitch driving, and now I average a 49.7 ng lap, with my best being a 49.1 ng lap. I also spent some time perfecting the seamride and turnaround. On July 5th, I made my first glitch of the grind, and funnily enough, I used the super fast turnaround and shroom (the wr method) in that run because the entry and seamride were too slow. The ideal lap I wanted to hit for lap 1 was a 22.2, so even with the advanced strat it was still too slow. A few days later on July 8th, I finished a 2:03.069, with a 22.0 glitch lap. Once again, the ng driving was the main issue but I was still pretty happy with 4th worldwide. After that run I started streaming my attempts, in hope that I would get 3rd WW on stream, but for the week that followed, I only had a few NLCs to show for it. I took a 1 day break from streaming and set 2 glitches in one day, a 2:05 and a low 2:04. I kept streaming, again with nothing to show for it. I guess I’m just “cursed” lol.
The day of this run started off very well, I had a few seamrides and even an NLC on LAP 2 leading up to this run. Once I made the glitch and saw a 21.3 lap 1 I knew I just had to lock in and not make any major mistakes. Unfortunately, the driving did suffer in a few spots, such as a wheelie lock on lap 2, and a bad pipe section on lap 3. Even with the super fast glitch lap 1, I barely beat core’s run. Looking back, I’m dissatisfied with the ng driving, but at the end of the day, 3rd worldwide is 3rd worldwide, so we’ll take it. Once my time gets beat I’ll probably come and back and play lap 2 glitch. Thank you everyone for your support!

I was not satisfied with my 2:13, and I aimed to try this track again for a 2:05 or lower time. I expected a run like this to take much longer than it did. On January 19th, I spent about an hour practicing fast turnaround, but I wasn't making it all that often. On my first session, and first successful HWG entry into the wall, I nailed the glitch shown in the video. I don't know how I actually got it, it felt like I was paralyzed, it seemed like my muscle memory just kicked in and did the job for me. I was slightly nervous during lap two, and my whole mindset was to drive better than that of the 2:13. I expected this to take much longer and take a lot of grinding, but that was not the case. Fluke? I think so. 76 total bypasses and 7 successful entries. Now, I do believe its time for rDH glitch.
Lap 1: 23.855 | Very fast entry, seam ride was a little slower than the 2:13. A little hesitation before and after the turnaround. Horrible angle out of the respawn caused a re-alignment at the beginning of lap 2.
Lap 2: 51.333 | Average beginning besides the landing from first ramp. medium height trick off of 2nd boost ramp lost a decent chunk of time. Got another dumb slip before the waterfall which is the majority of the time loss here. Solid second half of the lap.
Lap 3: 50.038 | Finally hit a decent lap. Nothing major to note here except I almost missed the trick on the second ramp lol. good driving. played the last zappers pretty safe. good lap.

Wow. This was tough, one of the hardest ultras in the game. This glitch has always fascinated me, and there is quite the history on my journey with this shortcut. When Lawrence developed the easier HWG entry, I thought that maybe I could do it. I tried this glitch in August 2022, making absolutely zero progress. Out of boredom, in December 2022, I tried once more, and surprised myself by getting my first bypass after less than an hour of attempts. As I continued to try, I slowly realized that staying on the seam was much harder than it looks, and upon downloading the custom track that starts the race already inside the wall, I realized not only the seam ride was hard, but the turnaround and checkpoint navigation was precise as well. You see, at first I believed that the hardest part to this glitch was the entry, however I was wrong. After realized the immense difficultly of this glitch, I once again stopped trying, thinking it was too hard for me. Even though, however; One of my main goals was to one day make this glitch and get worldwide tops. For the meantime, it would wait.
In late December of 2023, I randomly stumbled upon one of Lawrence's streams, and to no surprise, he made the glitch before my eyes as if it were a piece of cake. Once, again I was motivated to try this glitch. Luckily, I had a new resource to help me. In April of 2023, I finally got Dolphin, allowing me to TAS the game. Using these tools, I was able to practice the heck out of the glitch. My focus at first was getting consistent HWG bypass attempts, and from there, I learned how to do the checkpoint navigation properly. My two main areas of practice were A) Directly after the bypass, as staying on while in shrooms boost is very hard, and B) practicing RTA using the custom track. Dolphin limited me to using mouse and keyboard which was not ideal, so the custom track allowed me to effectively practice all necessary components of the glitch once inside the wall. Before each session of RTA attempts, I would spend about 10 minutes on dolphin and 20 on the custom track. This allowed me to freshen up my muscle memory allowing for more consistent attempts and a higher chance at making the glitch. After about a week and a half of attempts, and 5 failed successful entries leading up to it, I finally got it. From the moment I launched off the track and OOB, I knew it was a lap count.
Lap 1: 28.163 | Very clean entry at about 5 seconds into the lap which is my target. I did not slow down too much after the shroom boost ran out unlike previous attempts, which allowed me to reach CP1 fast. The turnaround was pretty good, obviously I played it pretty safe. After the turnaround, I aligned myself pretty fast. The respawn was fairly average and I'm just happy I didn't miss the respawn boost. Overall, I am very satisfied of this lap. My goal was just to get a glitch lap under 30 seconds and I beat that by a lot.
Lap 2: 52.520 | Bad. Bad. Bad. Nerves really started to kick in here. Bad landing from first ramp and I got a really weird bounce that I've never gotten before from the second ramp. Decent recovery and the following part was fine. I got an unfortunate slip the following turn, but recovered well and there was no major mistakes leading up to the underwater section. BAM! right into the zapper. Very rarely in practice laps I hit the zapper, which shows how much nerves affected it/how unlucky this lap was. I was able to recover decently and finish the lap. This lap wouldn't have been horrible if I didn't hit the zapper. btw I average 49.8 - 50.2 no glitch laps without nerves.
Lap 3: 52.847 | Somehow even worse than the previous lap. beginning was decent, and once again I got the unlucky slip on the U-turn. If that wasn't bad enough, I got an even worse VERY unlucky slip on the following turn that made me go wide enough to hit the offroad, which is the majority of the timeloss. I recovered as well as I could. The rest of the lap was under average.
It took 68 total bypasses, of which 6 of them stayed on the seam. I plan to go for the fast turnaround strat and get 5th worldwide or below, but obviously that will take some work. I really hope that I can drive better in a future run. Thanks a lot to Lawrence for inspiring me to play this again. Thank you to others who have supported me along my journey as well. rDH will come soon I promise.

In April, I improved my Personal Best from a 51 second time, all the way down to a 37 second time, using the slow, shroom version of this glitch entry. I soon tried the no-stop shroom entry, and eventually I set a 34.064. That run was awful, and looking at the leaderboards, I knew that if I tried hard enough I could get into USA tops. After a few weeks of attempts and falling short, I took a long break. Eventually, I came back in August and set a 33.137, which was pretty good. Unfortunately, other players had improved there time, and NA tops was now a 33.103. I was 34 milliseconds short, and that run put me in 11th American. I once again took a break. After a short while, I came back mid October, and once again took a shot at American Tops. My goal was to sub 33.1XX. I had a few decent paces leading up to October 24th, when all the sudden I was hitting very fast shroom entries, and decent laps as well. All I needed was to put everything together. I only needed a small improvement, but as you can see I beat my goal by quite a bit, setting a 32.932. This time put me in 7th American, and it is my first regional tops ever.
In this video, I race my former PB of 33.137. The run had an OK beginning, following short behind my former PB which had an outstanding one. The HWG entry was above average and very fast, just like my former PB. My biggest timesave was at the end of Lap 1, where I nailed a very nice spindrift. the 19.770 is my best Lap 1 to date. The following Laps 2 and 3 were also above average, which allowed me to keep a steady lead from my PB. The only major time-losses in this run are the beginning stair-stick (QM), and I did have to slow down quite a bit before the spindrift on lap 2. I am very happy with this run, and I think should be able to keep tops for quite a while.
My best splits give a 32.5XX, which is within Worldwide Tops. Will I try to get WW Tops in the future? We'll see. Thank you to those such as Diego, Logan, and many others who supported me through this small achievement.

The run is pretty bad, with a bounce and realignment on lap 1 losing around 700 milliseconds. About this run: (See 2024 edit below) Angle looked perfect, the clip itself was kinda messed up but it shouldn’t have mattered. Missed making it over the ridge by a few frames, but still got the correct respawn. According to Ejay, I stayed in CP0, however I did not go far enough back to hit the correct checkpoint. That being said, CTGP did detect this as a “glitch” run, because I stayed in CP0 and didn’t cross backwards, so according to CTGP, “rDH Glitch” is an official category. Streamed live at: twitch.tv/117james
January 2024 Edit: In this attempt, I nosedived WAY too early, therefore disobeying the 95% Rule due to the considerably farther distance required to obey it. When corrected in Dolphin, It was very easy to delay the nosedive and bounce into CP53 and obey the 95% rule.DS Desert Hills Glitch RTA | Another very close NLC117james2022-12-08 | A HIGHER QUALITY VERSION CAN BE FOUND HERE: youtube.com/watch?v=m5ZcKzOuDN0 We’re currently sitting at 128 total bounces (December 122nd) 6 high bounces (had another NLC similar to this one) Recording by Arthur
January 2024 Edit: At this point in time, I had finally figured out how to get a high OOB Bounce, and I was getting a number of NLCs. This attempt in particular crossed backwards by 3 frames (I enter CP55 for 3 frames before successfully leaving checkpoints). What is particularly interesting though is that had this attempt not crossed backwards, it most likely would have obeyed the 95% Rule.DS Desert Hills Glitch RTA | First ever NLC117james2022-11-11 | Ejay took a look and I was barely too far right. My first NLC (No-Lap-Count) 80 oob hops, 80+ hours of attempts Respect the grind.
January 2024 Edit: At the time of recording, I was aware that I crossed backwards, however I did not realize that even had I stayed in checkpoint 0, with that setup, The lap still wouldn't have counted due to the 95% rule. The clip distance has to be considerably farther that depicted in the video. At the time however, this was the first time I was actually confident that this could be with a lap count, it is only the matter of time.50 OOB Hops | DS Desert Hills Glitch - RTA Attempts117james2022-09-29 | • The grind continues… • Current OOB Hops: 124 (last one: December 14th) • I started attempting this glitch in March 2022 when I first starting picking the game back up. In April I had a clip off the red pipe that somewhat resembled the TAS, so I decided to start making serious attempts. That was a mistake. So far, I have at least poured 100+ hours into this Ultra Shortcut. This glitch is extremely tough and heavily relies on QM. I would not recommend trying this at all lol. I do plan on continuing attempts on this category, as am the closest in doing so, however the mental side of it is really tough. There are 7 things that need to go perfectly in order for this to work out. Getting just a few of these conditions to line up in one attempt is tough, much less getting 6/7 (as seen in the video). I have gotten good QM on a bad angle (31st hop), and bad QM on a perfect angle (50th hop + many more). Truly heartbreaking. You may be asking yourself, “why would this kid go for an extremely hard shortcut, that is only even useful for Flap WR?” The answer to that question is I don’t even know (hejDemented)
