Quantum Awakening 2024 - Sunshine [at Night] - live & improvised techno The Sunshine Group 2024-06-10 | Please subscribe to support the music :) Here's a little journal about the video:I was tasked with closing out the Techno Stage during the first night of Quantum Awakening's first festival. It was located on a campground on a pond, really beautiful and scenic. I think the set I performed it a pretty decently good techno set. Sadly, the crowd wasn't too interested. They all left like 20 minutes into my set! This was a psytrance festival and I don't think they heard my music as very good, since psytrance is just noise vomit lmao. My minimal style isn't optimal for psy festivals.I performed an ambient/chillout set the next night and that seemed to be much more well-received. Sadly, I don't have video evidence of that set :(Recording all these sets is a bit of a pain in the ass. This weekend I played the most phenomenal set for a wedding, and both my video and audio files are corrupted. It's truly disheartening when you try to put all this work and money into the music on for it to fail. Here's a little journal about the video:I got a chance to perform at one of the more prolific venues oo Mass Ave in Boston's Central Square: Sonia! Somehow, I applied for a little contest for an opening slot for touring act Rich Aucoin on a Tuesday night and won thanks to my past performances in the area. So I brought my rig up.The set went alright, it sounds pretty good for the most part but I can't feel like I'm missing the threshold just a little bit on the tones of my sounds, especially my kick drums. Sonia has what's considered one of the best sound systems in the city, and I found my sound to be kind of whack compared to other venues with lesser sound systems.Anyways, it's a cool enough performance to post. 5 minutes of techno improvisation (w/ explanation) The Sunshine Group 2024-03-30 | BASS FACE : I find hard, dark techno is pretty difficult to make "proper" and have been avoiding it for a while now. It's all in the low end, and I personally didn't think my gear could handle the nuances of booming bass. I could only really make acid techno, acid house, and minimal. That was until I got the Moog. Although I can't play acid music anymore (very sad about that), I can however now play ANYTHING. Basslines with this thing are monstrous. I can finally thicken up my kick drums with a good sidechain. This is a good example of using a droning bass tone as the kick's rumble. It puts the music in key, leaving you to do whatever you want, while also giving the availability for other basslines. Drones, man. I've come full circle lol.So yeah, I'm a part of a couple online groups that specialize in musical performances with hardware synths. One of them (Hardware Jams on Facebook) has weekly competitions catered around a certain theme. This week's theme is BASS! I'm also a part of another group that forucsed on long-format performances, and we had our weekly Club-themed "raidtrain" via Twitch. I came out of my set feeling REALLY good about it, I felt like I was BLOWING through ideas and making new things and keeping the dance floor on its toes. PATCHWORKS 001 - Sunshine [at Night] - live & Improvised in Boston The Sunshine Group 2024-03-26 | Boston's newest synth collective had me come in on a tuesday night to close down the show at the venue Zuzu in Boston. Was a successful first show for the group to say the least -- the place was packed! Too cool :)I've been invited to perform in a lot of these "live electronics" shows and they have me feeling really confident afterwards. Not just because it shows the work I've put into my synth rig, but because it allows me to be a bit creative with my performance. When I'm with DJs and at clubs, I NEED to play dance music at a certain BPM with a certain vibe. Here, I felt like I could do anything. I tried playing DnB! I got spacey and ambient, I broke the beat down a lot...I was creative! It's always a treat to be able to do such a thing. Dance clubs are a lot of pressure! Tropical Dreams 2023 - Sunshine [at Night] - live PA chill set The Sunshine Group 2023-12-21 | My journal of this set below, please read if you're interested.Tropical Dreams by Mutiny Entertainment is probably one of the biggest winter music festivals in the New England area and hosts the local DJs and electronic musicians as well as international-grade talent (such as Josh Wink!). It's an indoor festival that takes place in an entire hotel. There was a stage at the pool, huge stages in the conference rooms, vendors...the hotel turned into its own little ecosystem for the weekend. Very interesting concept...and a bit dubious if you can imagine 1500+ ravers in their own hotel for a whole weekend.I was lucky enough to perform twice at this festival: once as a synth-DJ-duo on the main stage and once here in the chill/vendor area. I met Josh Wink who I'm quite a fan of, got him to sign my 303 clone too! Very cool :)I had an insane day of events on Saturday so I was a bit tired for my 11pm performance but somehow got a huge jolt of energy right when my set started. I was told to play chill music, but when attending the festival, I noticed a lot of music that was less than chill, so that gave me a bit of confidence to go out and about musicially but I still wanted to keep everything accessible. Either way, this was an incredibly difficult performance. The way the stages were set up, there are 3 adjacent conference rooms at the hotel. The left most room contained the bass music stage (dubstep, dub, brostep, etc). The right most was the Drum and Bass stage, and the middle room (my room) was the chill area/vendor booth area. Seems cool, right? Nah dude, I was auditorily being flanked by sub frequencies emanating from the walks to my left and right. Luckily, the sound system I was using is incredibly loud, but when I wasn't playing low frequencies, I found myself very confused due to the surrounding sub sounds from the two stages adjacent mine. A bit of an oversight in my opinion but people seemed to enjoy my set.As always, please like, subscribe, and spread the word. Fractal Fest 2023 - Sunshine [at Night] - Live PA Acid Techno LiveSet The Sunshine Group 2023-08-30 | This video is awfully shaky for good reason -- the stage I performed on was floating in midair on a boomlift only accessible by a small wooden staircase. Dancing on this stage caused it to rock back and forth with your momentum, making it real difficult to perform, but man oh man was it quite exhilarating! How I wish you could see this stage! It is a masterpiece! Please do what you can to check out what's been going on with Fractal Tribe in New England, USA. It was quite the festival.I was the 4th performer on this stage and got to set the vibe as most of the festival attendees began entering the festival. This is a psytrace festival, so I tried to make it as acidic as possible. I also served as the head stage manager for the entire festival, and you can see my walkie-talkies with me on my synth rig. I am so proud that I thought to sample them in real time -- that beep will haunt me in my sleep.I've got to say, this is one of my best live performances. Energy was on point. Electro / House / Acid Live PA Liveset - Sunshine [at Night] The Sunshine Group 2023-02-21 | I've been sitting on this video for like 2 years now at least and I listened to it again and it's not good for techno music but it's fine if I call it electro, right?Anyways, here's a multi-track recorded set, much more high quality than my live stream sets which are only recorded to a two-track. Also probably the last video I'll have of me in my old studio on Pleasant St in Worcester, MA.This is also the last time I wrote a full-length set with the performance of performing in clubs. Over 120 sequences on the MPC makes up this set. I've performed this set a few times at bars in Worcester, MA but since learning how to improvise with my equipment, I haven't found a need to going back to sequencing. The performances are a lot less entertaining and I can make a new 3-hour set every time. I'd much rather rely on that.It's kind of impressive how far I've come. This is a bit more boring than my live, improvided performances. Not as much movement but still decent music. This set and my other set, PERFORMRENT, were great opportunities to understand my gear more, especially the Elektron Analog Four. What a great machine. I learned a hell of a lot this weekend, so I guess I'll write it down:Bring your own food in a cooler. 2 Bags of ice will keep your shit cold for 2 days before melting and then it'll keep stuff tepid the rest of the weekend. Pretty tight, but more ice is needed if there's no artist hospitality. As always, burritos are the ultimate food source, pack a bunch and put them in bags so the DONT GET WET from the melted ice in the cooler.DONT FORGET YOUR DAMNED MERCH. Like seriously you could network so well at a music festival with 100 business cards and stickers. Maybe could've even made a few bucks. Don't be mad if you're playing to nobody. Lol whats new like just keep playing a dope set.On top of that, if you're performing on stage, do what you're there to do, make your own sound. But if you're going to an impromptu performance in somebody's tent...read the damned room. I made a lot of people leave at 6am cuz I tried dropping late night acid techno at a bass music festival. Lol....I learned after like 30 minutes and dropped the tempo wayyyy down, and people started funneling back in to watch.Dubstep music gets kind of old but damn does it sound gnarly on good sound systems. I guess that's a testament to my abilities, I shouldn't think so harshly of myself. This past month I've been working on bringing techno to my city here in Massachusetts. Besides Boston, we're the biggest city in this region of the country, yet we don't have a consistent electronic scene! Booked a couple gigs to not much success but I'm gonna keep it going. MPC Workflow + Problems with 2.10 update The Sunshine Group 2022-05-16 | The general problem: I can no longer record/overdub/sequence a track when it is muted. I can do such a thing in 2.9, and in earlier versions, you'd still hear the pad you hit even if the track was muted!It would be nice if we could be able to switch among these modes so I can keep improvising like I'm able to in 2.9.

Synthfest was cool! I met a lot of dope producers from America this time! No offense to my European homies I've met over the past year, but it's a big goal of mine to go on a US tour with this rig soon, and this is a great little step to see all the other hardware heads who probably know of some scenes in their areas. Awesome. Followed a bunch of other musicians to add to that network -- if only I didn't play such late-night sets! So yeah these streams are definitely positive. Not sure how long they'll keep going, to be honest -- I don't see myself actually monetizing these streams -- but they'll definitely be a tradition for a long while. This is more a showcase to prospective show promoters and collectives to book me. If it serves it's purpose, I won't have time to stream as often! Not to mention, I have proof of practice, and watching old sets shows me how much I've improved over the last 8 months.
