Ever since Mars was found to be cold and lifeless, scientists have explored ways to make it more habitable. On Aug. 7, researchers from the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Central Florida unveiled a groundbreaking approach in *Science Advances*. They propose using engineered dust particles to potentially warm Mars by over 50 degrees Fahrenheit, making it suitable for microbial life. Matt Caplan is a professor of physics at Illinois State University. He received his bachelors from the University of Virginia and PhD from Indiana University- his thesis work was recognized with the 2018 Dissertation Award in Nuclear Physics from the American Physical Society.
Dr. Caplan’s research is broadly concerned with materials at high densities inside stellar remnants, such as crystals that form in white dwarfs and nuclear pasta phases in neutron stars. In addition, he works on nuclear weapons issues and was an inaugural fellow of the Physicists Coalition for Nuclear Threat Reduction. David Kipping of Cool Worlds lab joins John Michael Godier to discuss the search for exomoons and technosignatures.
Science is full of mysteries, and in astronomy, new mysteries are to be expected. Many get solved, many remain open. But sometimes in the history of astronomy mysteries can go unsolved for so long that they fall into obscurity, even if the implications of what might be happening are profound. One such example is known as Pryzbylski’s star, which first came to my attention half a decade ago.
In 1961, Polish-Australian astronomy Antoni Przybylsky found star that had a very strange spectrum that he thought was very low in iron and nickel, very common metals in the universe, but very high levels of strontium, holmium, yttrium and a number of other rare elements. Since, the iron levels of the star have been found to be low, but not that low. But the presence of the strange elements in this star has only deepened in that work from five years ago hinted at the presence of transuranic elements in the star, which actually puts it on the table as a candidate for a technosignature if those elements are indeed present.
My guest and I have been trying to draw attention to this star with our youtube channels in hopes of encouraging further work into this star. If those elements are present, then whatever is causing them does not seem to be found anywhere else in nature, and may involve cutting edge science in either the formation of elements heavier than plutonium in a star, the island of stability concept in nuclear physics, and the potential for a detection of an alien civilization.

"Almost all SETI searches to date have explicitly targeted stars in the hope of detecting artificial radio or optical transmissions. It is argued that extra-terrestrials (ET) might regard sending physical probes to our own Solar System as a more efficient means for sending large amounts of information to Earth. Probes are more efficient in terms of energy and time expenditures; may solve for the vexing problem of Drake's L factor term, namely, that the civilization wishing to send information may not coexist temporally with the intended recipient; and they alleviate ET's reasonable fear that the intended recipient might prove hostile."

JOHN GERTZ is the President and CEO of Zorro Productions, Inc. He has produced four Zorro motion pictures, including The Mask of Zorro (1998) and its sequel, The Legend of Zorro, with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. During his tenure, 14 different TV versions of Zorro have been produced, as well as more than 75 ZORRO stage productions. In 2005, together with world-renowned author Isabel Allende, he released the best-selling novel about the genesis of Zorro. He teamed up with Quentin Tarantino to create the graphic novel, Django/Zorro, currently being developed into a motion picture by SONY. Gertz is the worldwide lead producer of Zorro: The Musical, with a score by the Gipsy Kings, which premiered on London’s West End in 2008 and has since been produced throughout the world. Gertz is a leader in the field of SETI, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, having served three terms as chairman of the board of the SETI institute; and he has published a number of theoretic papers in peer reviewed astronomical journals.

Motivated by recent measurements of the free-floating planets, a new paper considers the possibility that the solar system may have captured a terrestrial planet early in its history.
Amir Siraj is a theoretical astrophysicist (Harvard University A.M. ’22, A.B. ’22) and concert pianist (New England Conservatory of Music, M.M. ’23). He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Princeton University’s Department of Astrophysical Sciences. CNN called his work one of ten “extraordinary cosmic revelations” in 2022, and he was the youngest scientist named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2021. Recently named one of Astronomy Magazine’s 25 Rising Stars, Siraj seeks to understand the solar system in the context of its cosmic environment through research topics including: interstellar objects, asteroids and comets, planetary system formation and evolution, supernovae, black holes, dark matter, and the search for life in the universe.

On the night of July 19th, 1952 something rather strange happened on two fronts in North America. At that time, one of the most puzzling UFO flaps in history was happening in the Washington, DC area including multiple radar returns and visual sightings from people in several locations. At Mount Palomar observatory in Southern California, a pair of photographic plates were taken about one hour apart, one just before 9 pm, the other just before 10 pm local time. In these plates, one showed a cluster of three star-like points, essentially indistinguishable from stars. But in the second plate, the points had abruptly and inexplicably disappeared.

"In a remarkable discovery, astronomers have found a disc around a young star in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy neighboring ours. It’s the first time such a disc, identical to those forming planets in our own Milky Way, has ever been found outside our galaxy. Dr. Mcleod’s main research interest is feedback from massive stars, and the key question she is trying to answer is: how exactly do massive stars influence their environment? Dr. McLeod uses data from so-called integral field spectrographs like MUSE or KMOS on the Very Large Telescope in Chile for her work.
