It's an incredible melody and over all vibe. That first fanfare sort reminded me of "In the Stone" by the legendary Earth Wind and Fire so I just couldn't resist arranging this style mashup!!
There is something so magical about the specific brand of nostalgia associated with the 2000s era Wii music, so it was a huge pleasure to arrange this timeless Nintendo theme for the band to be the first track off of our upcoming 5th album (which is still untitled)!!

#the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazzI Wanna Take You for a Ride *FULL SONG!* from Marvel vs Capcom 2 - ft. Lawrence (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2024-02-09 | IT'S MAHVEL BABY!! Finally we know what the rest of the song is!
So excited to finally drop this video of "I Wanna Take You for a Ride" aka the character select screen from Marvel vs Capcom 2. This track is based on the original 8 second loop that plays from that game, but expanded with additional music and lyrics as if it were a FULL SONG. I loved listening to the original loop so much that I couldn't help but imagine what it would be like if the iconic vocal loop would be if it were the chorus of a full length song, so I asked my dear friends from the band Lawrence to come in an help me co-compose the rest of the imaginary tune, and this is the incredible result!
Clyde Lawrence, who wrote the lyrics, did an amazing job incorporating some great references to the MvC2 game and community itself!!
I also couldn't help myself as an arranger but draw countless funky easter eggs from one of the greatest horn bands of all time "Tower of Power" see how many you can catch!!

#the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazzThe Next Best Thing Scott the Woz x 8-Bit Big Band - Orchestra Recording Session! The 8-Bit Big Band2023-12-25 | 📣 This tune is now on streaming platforms! 📣
Thank you so much to Scott the Woz for asking us to contribute an original song (and some instrumentals) to his latest Christmas video!!
Scott approached me about co-writing a brand new bespoke video game music inspired xmas tune for his channel about trying to save some money this Christmas by buying bootleg ROM hacks and other nefarious games, and of course I jumped at the opportunity!! Here's a look at the recording session behind the scenes for his video. You can see the song in context on his channel here:
Well it's Christmas man, what do you have planned? Surely something legal and just Though you must admit that your gifts lack grit, perhaps it's time you should indulge in sings outside of gluttony and lust (Like greed! Now THATS a sin!)
I know that it's expensive to come up with great gifts and the hottest games your kids already own But if you listen to my song the answers been here all along Perhaps it's time to buy a game that's brewed at home
So maybe...
How 'bout the next best thing? Like this bootleg GBA game called return of the king? It might not be Nintendo or Square Enix or Sony but you have to admit that the names got a ring (Ring a ding ding it passes the title test!)
Theres super Mario 4 and 14 (yes thats real look it up) They're just as good as Mario Odyssey you know your kids will play whatever if it's wrapped up with string so throw that dirty ROM hack into their stocking and get the next best thing
I've got Somari and Kirby Red Diamond (ooh!) Perhaps you'd like Pokemon Chaos Black Mario Kart Fighter and 7 Grand Dad No one will know that they're fake, so cut yourself some slack!
You deserve a break, a game is a game, and try to ignore that built in sense of shame They can't all be Call of Duty so close your eyes, swallow your pride, and don't you dare be snooty!
So how 'bout the next best thing? Just think of all of the money that you'll save cha-ching! For why spend $70 on a triple A game, when you could buy a home made one that has the same name? (Shop local folks!)
I understand your reservation, getting Crash 2 Advance can sting But if you give your cast to me I guarantee your kids will see and though these games might not be great it's way cheaper to emulate!
So trust in Scott and you can't lose, use the savings on some booze and this Christmas they will dance and sing, for the Next! Best! Thing!

When Jonah approached me about singing something with the band, I knew we had to do something from the Persona 5 sound track for him, and I recruited Button Masher to help bring some more advanced harmonic sensibility commonly found in Dirty Loops' sound. So recently we posted a video of a little side project arrangement, In between recording video game tunes the gang and I decided to have some fun and record an up-tempo swing arrangement of Beethoven's classic 3rd movement from the seminal "Moonlight Sonata"!
Here's a follow along score video for a behind the musical scenes look of whats going on under the hood (so to speak) of the arrangement, and a link to purchase the full score and parts for your own arranging/composing score study!
*WARNING* This arrangement is EXTREMELY difficult to play live for most members of the orchestra, and so I can't in good faith recommend that you attempt to play it live with your own band, but I can't stop you from trying, PERFORM AT YOUR OWN RISK! Here's a link:

Bryan CarterThe 8-Bit Big Band2023-12-02 | Drummer supreme Bryan Carter is featured in this high energy Jazz fusion Big Band arrangement of this modern video game music classic - "Dolphin Shoals" from Mario Kart 8 which has one of the internets' all time favorite sax solos that also contains a particularly note worthy be-bop lick you may already know and love :)
I took that lick and expanded it for the whole band and sax section, as well as tried to add in other "dolphin" related Jazz quotes such as Dolphin Dance and On Green Dolphin Street. See if you can find them!

#the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazzSuper Mario World Overworld Theme - Big Band Jazz Ballad version (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2023-11-27 | From the Super Nintendo classic, here is the "Overworld Theme from Super Mario World" in the style of the legendary Jazz Ballad "Lil Darlin" composed by Neil Hefti for the Count Basie Orchestra.
Note: The sharp eared listeners of The 8-Bit Big Band will recognize elements of this arrangement as sounding very similar to our recent arrangement of "Mabe Village" from Link's Awakening, this is because I actually conceived of this particular song in this arranging style first for our 4th album "Game Changer", but due to recording licensing issues was unable to include it on the album, and so I arranged "Mabe Village" instead with the same vibe and song form to take this tune's spot on the album in the exact same Jazz ballad style. The silver lining is now we have 2 west coast chill Jazz ballads of video game music classics in our library. Hope you enjoy :)

Originally a more electronic music/house inspired track, the lyrics and chord changes to me always felt like they would be right at home in a Judy Garland/Frank Sinatra inspired setting as the opening for some kind of mid-century variety show. #the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazzMoonlight Sonata 3rd movement - Big Band Jazz Version (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2023-08-10 | *ALSO AVAILABLE ON ALL STREAMING SERVICES AND BANDCAMP!*
Here's a little side project for you! In between recording video game tunes the gang and I decided to have some fun and record an up-tempo swing arrangement of Beethoven's classic 3rd movement from the seminal "Moonlight Sonata"! Most people are familiar with the 1st movement of this great piece, which is beautiful and haunting, but the 3rd movement has always stuck with me as an incredibly powerful and dramatic piece of music.
I wanted to pay tribute to this great composer 8BBB style while showcasing the INCREDIBLE musicianship in this band! For those who don't know, we do not rehearse music before we record it. These absolute stone cold incredible musicians here in NYC came in and read this sheet music the day of the recording session, and let me tell you this arrangement is HARD. I myself tried to learn it on piano, but could never get it up to full speed so I arranged it for my friends to play instead :)
So I hope you enjoy this slight detour from our usual video game music repertoire and indulge the music nerd in all of us with some Ludwig Van. Thanks for listening!! The sheet music for this will be available soon on our website once I get it cleaned up and ready for release, but again I warn you, this arrangement is extremely difficult and I can’t in good conscious recommend that it should be attempted by anybody as it is INCREDIBLY challenging but I certainly can’t stop you from trying ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazz(I Am the Very Model of a) Scientist Salarian *FULL SONG* ft. Will Roland - The 8-Bit Big BandThe 8-Bit Big Band2023-06-18 | • NOW AVAILABLE ON ALL STREAMING SERVICES! •
Codex entry: Scientist Salarian, a parody of the Modern Major General song (humans Gilbert and Sullivan, 1879) was written in 2171 by famed Salarian lyricist and part time structural biologist Jokus Kirosa. The song was later featured as part of the 2183 inaugural gala celebrating humanity’s contributions to the galactic artistic community, where it was performed for the council alongside other classics like Francis Kitt’s All-Elcor Hamlet and Leonin Trebin’s musical comedy rendition of “Jaynestown”.
So thrilled to finally bring the full version of this Mass Effect legendary dialogue easter egg to life! When I first played Mass Effect 2 and discovered the dialogue option of Mordin Solus talking about his time singing this Gilbert and Sullivan "Pirates of Penzance" classic I immediately took to the internet to see if there was a full version of the lyrics in existence. After a little googling I discovered an entry on fanfiction.com by the incredible writer by the user name AssaultSloth of a fantastic expansion of a full set of lyrics and KNEW I had to give musical life to his genius writing! So for all you fans who intersect the Mass Effect universe and the operettas of the great Gilbert and Sullivan like myself, this one is for you!! Hope you enjoy! You can read AssaultSloth's full FanFiction entry here:

It's an incredible Trad Jazz theme from a beloved release. I truly love Mario Paint so much. It was my first introduction to music software with it's built in composer function, and it came with a mouse?? For your TV?? Truly a mind blowing piece of creative software at the time. Here's how it would sound if it were the end credits theme for a mid century TV sitcom :)

The incredible Benny Benack III returns once more with another Jonathan Coulton composed game music hit "You Wouldn't Know" from Lego Dimensions: Portal!
In this arrangement, I fused this incredible tune with the big band classic "Ain't That a Kick in the Head" originally sung by Dean Martin (which was arranged by the great Nelson Riddle)! It's a testament to great song writing when your lyrics and melody can function in an entirely different context like this, so huge thanks to Jonathan Coulton for this great piece of music!

Patrick Bartley (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2023-01-09 | The incredible Patrick Bartley is featured in this modal hard bop Jazz inspired arrangement from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Patrick is one of the most incredible alto sax players I've had the pleasure of meeting, also a champion of video game music, he also sometimes does a rendition of this classic video game music tune in his live performances which inspired me to create this version to showcase his ability!
The keen Jazz fan might be able to pick out some post bop inspired references in the arrangement such as: So What, Impressions, Joshua, and Yes and No. Hope you enjoy!
Check out more of Patrick's incredible VGM arrangements and band here:

The 8-Bit Big Band "One Minute Bytes" #17 - "Town Theme" from Sim City (SNES). Soyo Oka wrote one of the low key most beautiful OST's on the SNES port of the original Sim City. Wanted to pay my small tribute to her incredible writing and expand some of the best themes from this amazing game from my youth!
One Minute Bytes is our series of short videos dedicated to melodies and themes from within video games that deserve to be arranged even if they might not be the main theme of said game. Hope you enjoy these small, sharable, bite sized chunks of video game music!

The 8-Bit Big Band "One Minute Bytes" #16 - "Athletic Theme" from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins (Gameboy). One of my most played games of all time growing up! I used to just sit still in the levels that had this music and listen to it as long as I could, that is until the timer ran out and Mario died!

#the8bitbigband #videogamemusic #videogamejazzChrono Trigger Main Theme - Big Band Jazz Fusion version ft. Steven Feifke (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2021-12-07 | The incredible pianist and composer Steven Feifke is featured on piano in this Jaco Pastorious/Chick Corea inspired Jazz fusion arrangement of the Main Theme from Chrono Trigger (1995)! The original song has some pretty great parralell minor 9 chords that made me draw the connection between this and Jaco Pastorius’s famous composition "Kuru/Speak Like a Child" so I wanted to honor his great bass playing, and let Steven play the role of Herbie Hancock, with a short tribute to the late great Chick Corea's "Spain" in the middle with a similar sounding unison line. Hope you enjoy!!

Leo P - Big Band Rock/World Fusion Version (The 8-Bit Big Band)The 8-Bit Big Band2021-11-22 | The incredible and one of a kind Baritone Sax phenom LEO P. performing the "Underground Theme" from Super Mario Land for the Gameboy (1989) originally composed by the great Hirokazu Tanaka.
I was heavily inspired by Leo's incredibly unique approach to his horn, and wanted to draw some vocabulary from Arabic classical legendary artists such as Umm Kulthum while letting him rock out with his unique sound on the melody (while throwing in some love for Camille Saint-Saens towards the end in the process!) Hope you enjoy :)
