결국 나만이 남았다. 눈을 감고 내 안을 들여다보고 나서야, 비로소 온건한 하루가 내게 찾아왔다. 후회와 불안으로 가득 찬 속삭임이 더는 들리지 않으니, 마침내 사진 속 나는 웃을 수 있었다.

I press the shutter, capturing a day soon to be forgotten. As I relive each moment of the countless todays, I gradually clear away the clutter clouding my view.

In the end, only I remain. After I close my eyes and look within myself, a gentle day finally comes. With the whispers of regret and anxiety no longer reaching me, I was finally able to smile in the photo.

A clear and transparent sky is reflected in the pond. Though I could easily see the bluer, original sky, somehow, the sky reflected in the pond feels more delicate and comforting.

The me of yesterday whispers to my mind today. I could listen closely and return to the past, but somehow, yesterday's me feels like a person who no longer exists.

일이 잘 풀리는가 싶어도 어느새 흐트러지고, 앞날이 캄캄하다가도 눈을 떠보면 밝은 빛이 우릴 비추곤 해요.

그래서 저는, 근본적으로 불운과 똑같은 행운에 집착하기보다 이 불확실한 지금을 즐기고자 하는 소망이 생겼어요. 여전히 불안하고 무섭지만, 동시에 언제나 설렐 수 있으니까요.

그 이상하고 모순적인 모든 하루가 한데 모여 나를, 나의 인생을 빚을 수 있길 바라며.

When things seem to be going well, they suddenly fall apart. When the future seems dark, a bright light often shines upon us.

Rather than clinging to fortune that is essentially the same as misfortune, I have come to appreciate the beauty in this uncertain present. It is still anxious and scary, but at the same time, it always allows for excitement.

Story:
I pack my backpack for a trip. I put in some clothes, a sleeping bag, and some snacks. But soon, the backpack looks like it's about to burst. I feel like I need a worry stone for when I'm anxious, and a snake-shaped toy in case a toxic frog pops out… Eventually, the backpack is filled with random stuff.

"At this rate, I can't even start the journey..."

I turn the backpack upside down and shake everything out. After a brief moment of thought, I pack a few things: a piano, a game console, and a positive attitude that everything will be alright.

여행을 떠나기 위해 배낭에 짐을 꾸린다. 옷가지와 침낭도 넣고, 간식도 챙긴다. 그러나 얼마 후, 배낭은 곧 터질 것 같은 모양을 띤다. 불안할 때 문지르는 돌도 필요해 보이고, 독성 개구리가 튀어나올 수도 있으니 뱀 모양 장난감도 필요해 보이고… 결국 잡동사니로 가득 찬 배낭의 모습이다.

“이래서는 출발도 못 하겠어..”

배낭을 뒤집고 탈탈탈, 전부 털어낸다. 그리고 짧은 고민 끝에 몇 가지를 담는다. 피아노와 게임기, 다 잘 될 거라는 긍정적인 마음.

고통으로 가득한 삶이라는 무대 속에서, 우리는 인생을 연기한다. 죽어가는 자기 입꼬리를 잡아 올리며, 뭐 하나 되는 일 없는 세상을 막막하게 바라만 보고 있다. 삶이, 나를 비극적인 결말로 딛게 하려는 가혹한 쇼로 보인다.

삶과 시간이라는 허상에 속아 수많은 날을 흘려보낸 후에도, 내가 서 있는 이 무대는 여전히 아름답기만 하다. 추락 속에서도 스포트라이트는 나를 비추고 있다. 내 삶에 다른 누군가가 주인공이 될 수는 없다.

삶이 이토록 절망적이라, 역설적으로 우리는 다시 일어설 수 있다. 이야기의 끝이 아닌 지금을 살기 위해, 지금, 이 순간에도 우리가 할 수 있는 것들을 마땅히 할 수 있다. 해피엔딩으로 무대가 막을 내릴지는 상상도 못 한 채로, 현실을 달리는 연극의 주인공처럼.

On a stage called life, filled with suffering, we act out our lives. We force a smile on our dying faces and look helplessly at a world where nothing goes right. Life seems like a harsh show designed to lead us to a tragic end.

Even after being deceived by the illusion of life and time, spending countless days, the stage I stand on remains beautiful. The spotlight shines on me even as I fall. No one else can be the main character of my life.

Life is so despairing that, paradoxically, it allows us to rise again. To live in the present rather than the end of the story, we must do what we can at this very moment. Like the main character of a play who keeps performing without knowing if the stage will close with a happy ending.

실없는 장난을 하며 놀았던 어린 시절. 순수한 욕심만이 나를 이끌던 그 어린 나는, 지금도 언제나 내 곁에 있다. 어른이 되어가며 사라지는 듯 보여도, 어린 나는 항상 나에게 말을 걸어오곤 한다. “오늘은 뭐 하고 놀 거야?”라고 속삭이면서.

기특하기도 하고 성가시기도 한 어린 나. 가끔은 그 녀석이 밉기도 하다. ‘너만 없으면 내가 더 나은 어른이 될 수 있을 텐데’라고 생각하며, 어린 나를 내쳤다. 그러자 그 녀석은 있는 힘껏 이해할 수 없다는 표정을 지으며 구석 어딘가로 숨어들었다.

곁에 어린 내가 없으니, 마음속엔 공허가 피어났다. 놀이가 즐겁지 않아졌다. 하고자 하는 일도 없어졌다. 생각해 보면, 내가 먼저 어린 나에게 놀자고 한 적은 없는 것 같다. 내가 어린 나를 통제하고 있었다고 생각했는데, 반대로 어린 내가 나를 이끌어주고 있었다.

“맛있는 마카롱을 사줄게, 이제 나와서 같이 놀자.” 라고 허공에 대고 소리치자, 어린 나는 언제 서운했냐는 듯 뛰쳐나와 미소를 보인다. 우리는 힘을 합쳐 모래성을 쌓으며 놀기 시작한다. 어린 나는 모래를 쌓고, 나는 모래가 단단해지도록 옆에서 물을 부어준다.

지금의 나를 만들어준 아이. 누구보다 지금의 나를 잘 이해할 수 있는 아이. 이미 어른이 되어버린 나를, 또다시 어린이로 만들어주는 고마운 아이. “어린 나야, 고마워. 더 이상 너에게 미안하다고 하지 않을게. 네가 꿈꿔왔던 어른이 나일 수 있게, 내가 옆에서 도와줄게.”

Childhood, which was filled with silly pranks and playful moments. The little me, driven by pure desires, is still always by my side. It seems to disappear as I grow into an adult, but the child within me always speaks up. Whispering, "What are we playing today?"

The little me, both endearing and annoying. Sometimes, I even hate that kid. I thought, "If only you weren't here, I could be a better adult," and pushed the little me away. Then, with a look of complete bewilderment, that kid hid in some corner.

With the child gone, a void filled my heart. Playing wasn't fun anymore. There was nothing I wanted to do. Looking back, I never asked the child to play first. I thought I controlled the little me, but it was the child guiding me.

"Let me buy you some delicious macarons, come out and play with me," I shouted into the empty space. The child, as if never upset before, ran out smiling. Together, we began building sandcastles. The child piled up the sand, and I poured water to make the sand firm.

That child who made me who I am today. The one who understands me better than anyone else. The child who turns me, an already grown adult, back into a kid. "Thank you, little me. I won't apologize to you anymore. I'll be there to help you, so I can be the adult you've dreamed of."

Story:
빛. 빛이 보인다. 그러나 이내 어둠이 된다. 황혼 속의 무수한 반딧불이처럼, 광채들이 나타나고 사라지고를 반복한다. 우리는 그 빛을 맹목적으로 따라가지만, 온화하게 우릴 감싸는 어둠 속에서 반드시 길을 잃고 만다.

너무나 희미하고 엷은 빛이라, 어둠과 구분이 힘들 정도로 약한 문채에서, 어떠한 색이 보인다. 너무나도 닿고 싶고, 입고 싶고, 느끼고 싶은 아름다운 색. 반드시 나의 것이어야 하는 그 색 안에 나의 존재 이유가 있을 것 같기도 하다.

꺼져가는 빛 속에서 우리는 어둠이 된다. 이내 다시 환한 빛으로 피어난다. 손으로 꼬옥 움켜쥐어 나의 것인, 나의 것이었던, 색이 빛바래지지 않기를 기도한다. 그 허상을 열심히 좇으며, 우리는 한 마리의 나비가 된다.

Light. I can see the Light. But soon it turns into darkness. Like the countless fireflies in the twilight, glimmers appear and disappear repeatedly. We blindly follow that light, but inevitably lose our way in the gentle embrace of darkness.

In such a faint and thin light, from a light so weak that it's hard to distinguish from darkness, a color is seen. A beautiful color that I want to touch, wear, and feel so desperately. Within that color, which must be mine, there seems to be a reason for my existence.

In the fading light, we become darkness. But soon we bloom again in bright light. I pray that the color, which I once held tightly in my hand, which once belonged to me, will not fade away. Pursuing that illusion diligently, we become a butterfly.

I decided to accept myself, but I still felt out of place in the mirror. My body appears transparent in the mirror, but my mind is full of black noise. I closed my eyes again and drew the sky. My life that was blocking my way disappeared, and I flew up. That's how I and I, we travel through life in a coma state, neither alive nor dead. No more mirrors were needed on this path.

햇빛 한 줌 들지 않는 황무지. 달리고 달려도 출구는 보이지 않고, 땅에 박힌 거울 속 "나"들이 나를 응시하고만 있다. 한참을 거울은 무시한 채 달리다가 깨달았다. 애당초 출구는 없었다는 사실을. 거울에 손을 대고 우리는 드디어 시야를 공유할 수 있었다. 그렇게 바라본 세상의 틈새에서, 쏟아지는 별빛이 우리를 삼켰다.

언제나 자신에게 되물어봐. 나는 누구지? 난 뭘 하고 싶지? 질문에 대한 답은 중요하지 않아. 그렇게 자꾸만 나를 알아가려고 해보는 거야. 스스로를 사랑하라는 고리타분한 이야기가 아니야. 나는 그냥 나고, 나와 나 사이에는 어떤 규칙도 개념도 벽도 없어. 눈을 감은 채로 이 무아의 공간에 머물러 보는 거야.

I realized after running for a long time ignoring the mirror. The fact that there was no exit in the first place. Touching the mirror, we were finally able to share our vision. Always ask yourself back. Who am I? What do I want to do? The answer to the question doesn't matter. Just keep trying to get to know yourself like that. It's not a lame story about loving yourself. I'm just me, and there's no rule, no concept, no wall between me and me. Just stay in this empty place with your eyes closed.

새벽이 무르익고, 서서히 해가 떠오른다. 어젯밤 내가 그린 고양이가 내 옆에 앉아주었고, 나는 고양이와 함께 건물 옥상에 위태롭게 앉아 경치를 구경 중이다. 고양이에게 말을 걸어본다. "야옹아, 난 높은 곳이 무서워. 그렇지만 이 아찔한 높이보다 무서운 건, 내가 떨어져도 태양은 언제나 떠오를 거란 사실이야. 그래서 나는 일어서야만 해. 내가 죽어도 내가 살아있을 수 있게, 나라는 하찮은 존재를 세상에 새기고 싶어." 고양이는 모든 것을 다 알고 있다는 듯한 미소와 함께 갸르릉 거릴 뿐이다.

늘 갈망해야 해. 1차원적인 만족과 쾌락에서 벗어나. 성공에서 오는 짜릿함도, 실패에서 오는 절망감도, 모두 한 곳을 바라보고 이뤄온 것이라면, 너는 여기서 멈출 이유가 없어. 웅크린 채로 짜고 있는 시간이 아깝다는 건 너도 알고 있잖아. 일어서. 도전하고 갈망해. 익숙한 것을 새로운 것으로 바꿔. 용기의 무게는 사람마다 다르기에, 그 누구도 너에게 나아가라 할 수 없어. 이건 오직 나만이. 미래의 나에게 전할 수 있는 메시지야.

The dawn is ripe, and the sun slowly rises. The cat I drew last night sat next to me, and I'm sitting precariously on the roof of the building with the cat, enjoying the view. I try to talk to the cat. "hey cat, I'm afraid of heights. But what's scarier than this dizzying height is that even if I die, the sun will always rise. So I have to stand up. I want to engrave my trivial existence so I can be alive even if I die." The cat only purrs with a smile that seems to know everything.

You always have to crave. Away from one-dimensional satisfaction and pleasure. If both the thrill of success and the despair of failure have been achieved by looking at one goal, you have no reason to stop here. You know it's a waste of time crouching and crying. Stand up. Challenge and yearn. Change the familiar to the new. The weight of courage varies from person to person, so no one can tell you to go forward. It's just only me. It's a message that can be sent to me in the future.

2019년 여름, 어느 일요일이었다. 여느 고삼이 그렇듯, 미래에 대한 고민으로 우울했던 나는, 동네를 걷다 우연히 턱시도 무늬를 가진 고양이를 만났다. 고양이는 음식물 쓰레기를 뒤적거리고 있었다. 그 모습을 본 순간, 나는 아무 생각도 할 수가 없었다. 그저 멍하니 그 고양이를 바라보고 있었다.

동정심이었을까, 고양이에게 나를 투영시킨 것일까, 그냥 단순히 다음날 등교를 해야 한다는 사실이 서글펐을까, 이유는 기억이 나지 않는다. 그날의 감정을 잊지 않고자 이 곡을 썼는데도 불구하고.

그러나 이 곡을 들으면 그날이 머릿속에 그려진다. 익숙한 풍경, 늘 같은 자리에 있던 건물들, 매일 마주치는 친구들. 이제는 어쩌면 꿈같은, 그날의 나로 돌아가는 망상을 하며 음악을 듣는다. 결국 나에게 남는 것은 과거에 했던 고민 따위가 아니라, 행복했던 기억이었다.

목구멍까지 차오른 이 말을 끝내 하지 못했던 그 봄, 짝사랑은 두 번 다신 하지 않겠다 다짐했던 내가 또다시 홀로 꽃밭을 뒹굴고 있었다. 한 마디 한 마디가 조심스럽고, 작은 관심에도 심장이 터질 듯 좋았던 그 시절에. 나만 놓으면 하늘로 자유롭게 날아갈 풍선을 잡고 바라보고 있었다.

여느 사랑 노래가 그렇듯, 행복한 결말은 아니었다. 그러나 이루어지지 못했던 사랑에 슬퍼했기보다는, 그 설렘이라는 값진 감정을 오래도록 보관하고 싶은 마음이 앞섰다. 이 노래를 계기로 다시금 그 꽃밭에 놀러 가는 기회가 될 수 있기를 바라며, 그날을 머릿속에 그려본다.

Story:
별을 타고 우주로 여행을 떠난다는 상상을 해보았다. 별과 함께 날아오르며, 알 수 없는 편안함에 휩싸였다. 춥지 않을 정도의 산들거리는 바람, 어둡지만 내 앞길만은 환하게 비추어주는 별빛, 빠르지만 무섭지는 않을 정도의 속도로 나는 날고 있었다.

혼자 붕 떠서 허무맹랑한 망상이나 하며 시간을 보냈다고, 자신을 자책하게 될까 두렵기도 했다. 하지만 눈을 감고 떠올린 매 순간의 망상에서 나는 별을 만났고, 지금도 그 별들과 함께하고 있다.

오늘의 망상 속 환하게 빛나는 별을 훗날 직접 하늘에 달 수 있도록, 지금 내 옆에 있는 작은 별과 함께 날아가야겠다.

나는 길 한복판에 누워있다. 별을 보기 위해 하늘을 봤지만, 시내에서 무수한 별을 보기는 불가능한 것이 당연하다. 눈을 감고 보라색과 파란색을 떠올려본다. 다시 눈을 뜬 순간, 앙증맞고 귀여운 자두들이 나를 에워싼다. 하늘에선 반짝이는 별들이 쏟아지고, 색안경이라도 낀 듯 주변이 파란색으로 물들게 된다. 맛은 볼 수 없지만 달콤한 자두들과 여행을 떠나본다.
