FB-01 Vs MT-32 | History and Combat Espen Kraft 2023-07-10 | Yamaha FB-01 from 1986 and Roland MT-32 from 1987. Two modules that over time has gained a cult classic status. For different reasons. Before any of them became that, they were 2 multi timbral sound modules that fought for the money of the happy amateur musician in the mid-to late 80s.00:00 Intro00:34 Rumours about the MT-3201:00 The D-50 is released01:26 The MT-3202:24 The FB-0104:40 Sound comparison10:42 Gaming11:45 Outro/ConclusionThe MT-32 had 32 voices of polyphony and had a simplified D-50 sound, effects and drums. The Polyphony came with one "downside", if the voices were made up of the maximum of 4 partials, the total polyphony was only 8 voices. All the parameter values inside the Six-Trak is written on the front panel. Just add the value of 2 and program your controller with that total value.Example: Cut-off Frequency is #19 inside the Six-Trak. Add 2 and you get #21. One of the most sampled Kicks and Snares of any record | Pepsi & Shirlie Heartache Espen Kraft 2023-06-19 | One of the more sampled 12" records was "Heartache" with Pepsi and Shirlie. Let's sample this into the Akai S900 and isolate the kick and snare and use it differently. Just to show how it was done.In the mid- to late 80s 12" maxi singles were great sources for sampling. Often you could find sections with just the drums, where you could chop it up and isolate the kick, snares hats etc. This was very common and with EQ and processing no one would ever find out.The little track I made using the samples is of course "Straight Up" with Paula Abdul. A pro reverb by Roland (with a semi-pro price at the time) that set out to compete with among others, the Lexicon PCM60 at the time. Grainy and beautiful in its sound and you can get some huge gated reverbs from this.There are also a "secret" delay mode on this, but in all fairness, the "delay" mode is more of a test setup, even if some will have it to be a SDE-2000 light. Buying the Akai Force was a big mistake | Live playing update Espen Kraft 2023-05-21 | Buying the Akai Pro Force untested was a big mistake. The modern day Emulator | Making a custom patch bank for my live set with the Prophet X Espen Kraft 2023-05-07 | If I was going to assemble a live set, on a keyboard sampler in 1984, I would probably have gone for the Emulator II. It was one of the few solid options that wouldn't break the bank. Decent amount of memory etc. Today, the equivalent option is to use the Sequential Prophet X.The whole premise is of course that it's all done inside the sampler keyboard and not in a laptop. Akai Force: Necessary evil? Espen Kraft 2023-02-23 | The Akai Pro Force isn't what I'd normally go for in terms of playing, recording or recording music. However, since I don't want to use any laptops on stage, in my upcoming live events, I recently decided to rethink my entire live setup.I wanted to do everything with live MIDI sequencing, as I always used to do it, but I realized it's simply not doable given the amount of gear I'd have to bring to venues, the potential for gear breakdown and also playing time. I've decided to do all my material with drums, bass and parts of the synths pre-recorded, and play/sing on top. Half of my live material is vocal based.With a guitarist that doubles as a keyboard player this will definitely be a live performance regardless.At first I didn't like the Akai Force, but I've warmed up to it and find it a very good laptop substitute as I don't want to bring computers on stage.The Akai Force will be used in 2 different ways; as a clip launcher for some of the songs, but most of all as a live linear audio clip sequencer.
