Mares Fusion 52x Regulator Review | Unnecessarily Complicated and Overpriced! 50ft Below 2018-10-18 | The Mares Fusion 52x is the flagship regulator of Mares and is a great regulator. That is as long you keep the VAD system in minus mode! The VAD system doesn't add anything to the regulator and in our opinion it makes it unnecessary expensive! The price tag of $ 719.95 on Amazon puts it right up with other high-end regulators but does the performance justifies this price tag? When you see the Mares Fusion 52x for the first time you will be stunned by it looks. The regulator simply looks beautiful. The matte finish on the second stage really gives it class without it being a blingy shiny regulator. The design looks bulletproof and you can feel the effort Mares has put in to make this a quality regulator set. There are no excess buttons on the second stage except for the VAD system next to the hose. All this combines to a sleek looking regulator which by looks can compete with the best.The 52x First StageThe 52x first stage is a variation on the MR52 which Mares used with other regulators in the past. Thanks to the new design of the valve and seat Mares reports a boost in reliability of 600%. We haven’t had any problems with our testing model but we only dived with it for around 20 dives. Browsing the internet for long time user we couldn’t find any complaints about failing fusion regulators. This is a major upgrade from the older models which are notorious among cold water divers.The 52x features two DFC (Dynamic Flow Control) low pressure ports, this system prevents the drop in pressure during inhalation. Because of heavy European regulations which demand a high preforming alternative second stage, Mares has fitted the second port for the alternative air. The strange nipple which where in earlier version of the DFC ports are gone. You can now use normal hoses with DFC ports. Besides the two DFC ports you get two normal low pressure ports on the other side and two high pressure ports.The Mares 52x is available in a DIN 300 bar and Yoke 232 bar version. Both weighing in at 25oz/687gr for the yoke and 18oz/513gr for the DIN version. As you might expect from a high-end regulator, the 52x is balanced.The Fusion Second StageThe thing which sets the Fusion apart from other regulators found in the second stage. Where the hose meets the body of the second stage you will find a VAD switch with a + and – sign on it. The VAD is also the only button or switch on the second stage. No venturi switch, the Fusion does this by itself and no other air resistance switch either. The massive purge button on the front tilts backwards from the top and also results in a massive burst of air. The stage only weighs in 11oz/327gr and doesn’t feel to heavy in the mouth. The exhaust valves are place under such an angle that the bubbles will go past your face instead of in front off.The Mares Fusion 52x in Real LifeTaking the Fusion for a spin is a joy. The breath resistance is minimal and the regulator feels natural in your mouth. When you turn the VAD to plus mode you will get an extra burst of air every time you inhale. For me and several other instructors who have tried the Fusion for us this was to much. Especially when you have the plus mode on when you’re on the surface. It somehow feels like to much air and it feels like your getting inflated. This get’s slightly better when you dive deeper and deeper but to our liking it was still to much. Another problem is that when you finish your dive and exit the water the VAD might still be in + mode. The regulator really easily purges itself then which results in a loud and massive release of air.A great thing about the Fusion is the fact that the performance is great in minus mode and it stays that way no matter how deep you go. The purge button is easy to reach and use even if you are wearing gloves. The amount of air released after pressing it is sufficient and not too much for our liking.Is the Mares Fusion 52x Worth a Buy?The Fusion is a great regulator which performs outstandingly in cold water and warm water alike. The reliability is mostly fixed with the X update of the MR52 first stage and you’ll get an regulator which you can trust. On the other side the VAD system is in our few an unnecessarily expensive addition. The Fusion would have been great without it and possibly cheaper.

Scuba BCDs - The Difference Between Jacket Style, Wing Style and Semi-Wing Style 50ft Below 2018-09-06 | A jacket style, a wing or maybe a semi-wing? There are three main types of scuba diving bcds and all of them have pros and cons. In this video we tell you all about them! But to make things more clear there a basically only three main types of BCDs. A jacket style, a wing style and a semi-wing bcd. All three have benefits and drawbacks to them and we are going to tell you all about them. Jacket style BCDFirst up we have the jacket style BCD which is still the most popular among most divers. One of the main characteristics is the fact that the bladder with the air is all around you. So when you inflate the BC it will inflate on the back but also on the sides.What we like about a jacket style BCDs:You are very stable on the surface. A jacket style BCD requires no effort to keep you upright on the surface.Underwater it’s easy to change diving position. If you want to like for instance swim on your back or side then this is easily done.Almost all jacket style bcds have weight intergrationJacket style BCDs tend to have big pockets and a lot of d-rings which make it easy to bring along accessories.What we don’t like about a jacket style BCDs:Your diving position is not ideal. You tend to swim with your legs pointed down a bit because of the position of the weight pockets and the bladder.Less freedom of movement because the pockets and weight pockets are under your arms. These restrict you to freely move your arms around.Some divers don’t like feeling the BCD compressing them when it’s fully inflated.Wing style BCDThe wing style BCD is becoming more and more popular but has it’s origins in technical diving. A wing is basically stripped of all components which are not deemed necessary for diving. Therefore it only consists out of a bladder, backplate and a harness. The main characteristic is the fact that the bladder is mounted on the back and when inflated you won’t feel it at all.What we like about a wing style BCD:Because a wing style only inflates on your back it put’s you in that prone diving position. This is the best and most streamlined diving position. A great benefit is that your fins are not pointing downward which prevents you from kicking up any dust or sand.Although the harness doesn’t look like much, once it’s correctly fitted to your size it’s really comfortable.Because a wing style BCD is stripped of everything which is not essential you have a lot of freedom of movement around your arms.All components are replaceable. So when you need a new harness you don’t need to replace the whole wing but just get a new harness.It’s possible to do technical dives (with a twin set) and recreational dives with a wing.What we don’t like about a wing style BCD:The harness is hard to set to size. Especially when you change from a wetsuit to a dry suit a lot it’s annoying to keep adjusting the size of your harness.It’s harder to get into a wing style BCD because the shoulder straps are not adjustable.There are no pockets and no weight integration on a proper wing. That’s why most technical divers have pockets on the legs of their dry suit.Something which you need to get used to is the fact that a wing tends to push you face down in the water on the surface. This is because the bladder is located on the back. This is easily fixed by leaning a bit back.Semi-wing Style BCDThe semi-wing BCD is more or less a hybrid between a jacket style and a wing style BCD. The bladder is located on the back, which gives you the “skydive” position in the water but also has weight integration and big pockets. Also most semi-wings have a normal adjustable harness.What we like about a semi-wing style BCD:The diving position of a semi-wing is pretty similar to a full wing. The prone position gives great streamlining and is perfect for not kicking up any dust or sand.Enough pockets and d-rings to stow away all the accessories you need.Almost all semi-wings have weight integration.A semi-wing has the same adjustable harness as a jacket style BCD. Therefore you can switch between a dry suit and wetsuit all you like without having to take a lot of time to adjust your harness.Easier to deflate because most semi-wings have bungee’s around the bladder which compress the bladder, forcing the air out while deflating.What we don’t like about a semi-wing style BCD:You can’t do technical diving with a semi-wing. Some allow you to put a 7×7 twin set on them but that’s about as big as you can go.There is no replacing separate parts like the bladder or a backplate unless you have bought the Aqualung Outlaw or Rogue.

This is one of the best scuba action cams despite the few flaws it has. That’s how Paralenz advertises there brand new innovation. With it’s electronic stabilization, automatic color correction, 4k 30fps function and 3 hours of recording time the Paralenz is a promising camera for sure but does it deliver on this promise? The first time I took the Paralenz out of the box I was suprised that it was that small. The dimensions only measure 116 x 35 x 38 mm and this makes it easy to put the camera in the pocket of your bc for instance. Operating the Paralenz is done in quite a innovative way. There is a ring which turns with which you can select the different modes and with the forward moving button you can set it to record or confirm an option. This is easily done even if you are wearing gloves.Specs, specs, specsThe specifications of the Paralenz are quite impressive. The housing is waterproof up 200 meters deep making it suitable even for technical dives. On one full battery you can film an impressive 2 hours in 4k and 3 hours in full HD. In the camera there is a sensor for temperature and depth which it will record. After your dive it’s possible to overlay the temperature and depth over your footage or use this data to log your dive. The handy app for Android and IOS is free and also displays all this data in many forms. It will do 4K in 30 fps, 1080p in 100 fps and 720p in 200 fps furthermore the Paralenz has electronic image stabilization and a white balance which adjusts itself to depth. But more on this later on.Mountin the ParalenzLike it’s main compatitor the GoPro, Paralenz has a fast array of different mounts available. Different to the GoPro is the way the Paralenz mounts. There are no nuts and bolts needed and the camera just clicks onto the mount with the rails on the bottom. The mount is sturdy and secure like with the GoPro which is a great feat without any hardware. One of the most eye-catching mounts of the paralenz is the 3rd person mount. This places you in the image in a different way then a selfie stick. The other mounts include a mask mount, ball head mount and a speargun mount. Up until today there are no after market mounts available from other manufactures.Taking the Paralenz for a spinThe Paralenz is fairly easy to use despite a few hiccups. First off Paralenz recommends that you have a freshly formatted SD card in your camera. When you don’t have this the camera sometimes tells you a video is saved when it’s really not. If you have acces to a computer this isn’t a big deal but when you are on your holiday with just one SD card this is rather annoying. Especially when you have just captured the biggest shark of your live! A big plus of the Paralenz is the way it’s operated. With the wheel on the front you select your mode and with the sliding button on the front you select an option or hit record. This system works great even if you are wearing gloves.Image QualityIn the end it all comes down to the image quality. First and foremost the Paralenz is a video camera. The stills are reasonable but are not as good as for instance a Sealife camera. The video on the other hand is great. Especially with the automatic white balance turned on. The depth sensor inside the camera recognizes the depth and changes the white balance accordingly. Thanks to this your images have great color like with no other camera. We can’t emphasizes enough how good this option is and it works with green and blue water alike. Circumstances with high dynamic range are less suited for the Paralenz. The camera tends to overexpose the highlights which is a pity. The Electronic image stabilization works as well but since it’s an optical one you still need to keep the camera as still as possible.Is the Paralenz Worth a Buy?The Paralenz has achieved something for divers which no other camera ever achieved. The automatic correcting white balance is great and yields a great image. The lack of a display can be troublesome for some video shooters but the angle of vision is pretty big and you should be able to get your subject in frame without a problem. The controls of the camera are easy to use but it’s dumb that you have to format your SD-Card after every use. If you don’t do this you run the risk of video’s not being saved which can be bummer. Overall the firmware is being updated regularly and Paralenz tends to listen to their users, so we are convinced Paralenz are able to fix the firmware issues.
