Koinobori 鯉のぼり (ukulele rendition) paxukulele 2024-05-06 | Enjoyed spending time with my son's family during Golden Week, a string of holidays here in Japan. I like to set up our koinobori (carp streamers) in celebration of Children's Day, one of the special days of Golden Week, as many families do. While showing my granddaughter Mei the koinobori, I started singing this song and I was surprised when she started singing along, although she is only two!Here's my rendition of this classic Japanese children's song and video of our koinobori strung across our garden.

In one of their comedy shorts, the Three Stooges taught a song called "Swinging the Alphabet" to a university class. I remembered the song, and many decades later taught it to my granddaughter, Lulu. She learned the song quickly! Now we are both on vacation from school, so we decided to make a YouTube video featuring the song. Bluebird (Paul McCartney and Wings) ukulele rendition paxukulele 2024-03-09 | When I was setting up for my previous video, I noticed a mejiro hanging around our Japanese andromeda plant. Since I had the video camera already set up, I decided to see if I could get some video of the mejiro together with the andromeda. I positioned the camera in a good spot, then waited patiently. Sure enough, the mejiro was attracted to the nectar of the flowers and I used a remote control device to start the camera recording so that I wouldn't scare the bird away. I ended up with some nice video!Although the mejiro is green, I decided to record a rendition of Paul McCartney's "Bluebird" for the audio track. Hope you like it. By the way, a few months ago, the "Band on the Run" album just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its release.
Mama (Country Comfort) ukulele cover paxukulele 2024-03-06 | If you were living in Hawaii during the latter half of the 1970s, you had to be aware of the contemporary Hawaiian music groups that were becoming popular, such as Cecilio and Kapono, Kalapana, Olomana, Summer, and so on. One group that I liked very much was Country Comfort. This song played a lot on the radio. I don't know why they entitled it "Mama," but I liked it a lot. Hope you like my rendition!
Colours (Donovan) ukulele rendition paxukulele 2024-03-02 | In preparing for this video, I noticed that "lyrics websites" have the final phrase of the song as "when I've been loved," but it sounds like Donovan is singing "low" or maybe "loaved" (Scottish pronunciation?). Joan Baez clearly sings, "when I've been low" in her cover and in her collab with Donovan. To be honest, I have a hard time interpreting that line either way, so I decided to go with "loved," since I didn't want to end the song on a low note, pardon the pun.The video clips feature some flowers in our garden, along with a couple of clips from Shirakawa-Go, where my wife and I visited last summer. I don't grow corn, so the monstera and daphne will have to do to represent green!

Looking back at the last two years, my overall output was down compared to past years... just a combination of being busy (a good kind of busy), having less energy than I did in my younger day, and various health problems (such as a throat that gets irritated very easily). However, I did work on some songs that were pretty challenging for me as well as some songs that have been on my to-do list for ages. I do hope that I can increase my output in 2024, once my throat gets better!

So I was a bit sad to hear that the writer of the song, Shinji Tanimura, passed away recently (October 8). He wrote songs for other singers, and Momoe Yamaguchi had the biggest hit with this one. I love how the song flows from here to there to everywhere.This is my second attempt at this song. My first attempt came in my early days of YouTubing (early 2007) on my old keonepax channel. I had spent several days in the hospital, so I had a lot of time to think about what song I wanted to cover after I got discharged. However, I think my voice wasn't in the best shape at that time, and I made a headless video because I didn't want to show the scars I had on my face from shingles.
