To celebrate 10 Years of Metro games, we are giving you a glimpse into the work that goes into capturing that perfect moment in time. If you have ever wondered how these are made, this is the video for you. More details below:We build our games to be as visually beautiful as we possibly can - we like to think of them as expressions of art in addition to immersive experiences. Screenshots are a great way of capturing moments of gameplay or visuals that can inspire the imagination of your experiences when playing a game. Recently one of our artists put together a video collage of his archive of work towards making some of the screenshots that we have released for marketing Metro Exodus, and an explanation of the work process that goes into making them.When we capture screenshots we generally take 3 types: Live from gameplay in “release” mode, from gameplay using debug tools to slow time or move the camera (same as photomode for players), and composed in-editor shots using game accurate runtime simulation and visuals. - The first type is very time consuming because it relies on the simulation giving us a “perfect” composition to tell the story we want to tell; this takes a lot of trial and error and is basically what you do with photomode. - The second type gives us more control over fine tuning the chaos we are trying to capture; we use the same tools that you get in photomode, but we have more fine control outside of the UI and no camera restrictions as we can deal with any bugs that come up from taking the camera too far or into a wall. - The third type is built with in-game features, elements, and runtime simulation in our editor, with 100% accurate gameplay visuals, but are more composed in order to highlight the artful side of the experience; think of this as photomode enhanced as we can place/pose characters where we want them and run the same simulation of real-time gameplay from that composition. Together the three types of screenshots should help to illustrate the full scope of the experience that we are creating for players. This video shows a little bit of the process that we go through while composing the different types of shots described here, and the amount of iteration to find that “perfect” screenshot that is ready for prime-time.
