Of course, it was forced upon us due to a weather-related change of plans. But it didn't take long to adjust to the new plan. Based on previous episodes, we got lots of suggestions to remove the air to help mitigate dragging the bumper of the Airstream. Fair point! So we gave it a shot. It's important to remember that all the problems come together right out of the gate. Luckily, the fridge fix from last week worked great! You'll have to watch this episode to find out why marinara sauce was splattered all over the floors! We used to call these "dips," but with more experience, we just call it RVing. We know there's going to be a lot of commentary about the Airstream dragging. We knew this would happen. Not all Airstreams need to be lifted, but with the tail swing of the 30' model combined with the height of the F250... it seems to happen at least once on each leg. We'll be visiting Ronnie soon, and a 3" lift is first on our list of mods. In fact, a lift is required for the Airkrafters on-board generator installation. Candidly, working through these issues is actually fun to share. It’s like that great line from Kevin Costner, who plays a rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard in the movie The Guardian: "The only difference between you and the victim is the attitude in which you enter the water.” We knew when selling our dial-in Flying Cloud and purchasing a new-to-us Airstream that we'd spend the first month (or two) working through problems and learning which cabinets fly open and just when to duck your head. We've wanted to visit Bentonville, AR, for years now, mostly due to the growing reputation of its mountain bike trails. As it turns out, there is so much more to it! You might not consider the birthplace of Walmart an epic RV destination, but that's quickly changing. Even if you don't mountain bike, there are paved walking and hiking trails with exquisite artwork to enjoy along the way—not to mention great food, which is always something we appreciate. For RVers, perhaps the biggest attraction will be Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. You'll find original pieces you'd expect to see at the Smithsonian Institution, and admission is free. There are two campgrounds in Bentonville, and the best one for you will depend on the size of your RV and the facilities you need. It's usually done with a new RV, but a shakedown trip at the beginning of each season can make sense, too. Basically, a shakedown is a trial run to make sure everything is good to go when it counts. We're still getting acquainted with our new Airstream, but more importantly, we wanted to find a place for everything before we move out of the cabin next week and hit the road for the season. When it comes to a shakedown trip, it's a good idea to stay somewhat close to home. That way, if anything goes wrong, you'll have more options and be familiar with the area. It's also a good opportunity to double-check your roadside accounts to make sure they haven't expired and bust out a checklist to make sure you have the essential gear, like all the tools to change a tire. Shakedown trips are fun, but they can be frustrating too. If everything worked perfectly, you probably wouldn't need to take one. Remember that everything is "figure-outable," and half the time, problems arise from a lack of understanding about how the systems work. RVing gets a little easier with each trip, so give yourself some grace your first few times out. When things don't go to plan, it's easy to jump to the conclusion that you bought a lemon—but in our experience, upon further investigation, most of the solutions are simple. We receive emails all the time asking for more details on where our compressor or horn is installed, and when recording installation videos at a truck modification shop, it's hard to include all the key details. Hopefully, this video offers the details the community has been asking for. Having onboard air is very nice for several reasons. The most beneficial is being able to fill your own truck and trailer tires. Especially if your tires are inflated above 65 PSI, which is where most gas stations stop. Another benefit is being able to use air pressure for annual winterization, but using the Viair Winterization kit. And of course using the air horn, which has countless applications! Although train horns (and multiple horns) are more popular, I'm partial to the long single 25" truck horn. Mostly because I don't look good in orange and don't want to go to jail! But that wasn't even the hairiest part—the entire process was a bit overwhelming. In our case, having a personal relationship with the new owners made it important to make sure that our Airstream was at its peak. We got there, but it took a lot of work. As we drove home from Sacramento for the first of two times, we kind of dreaded the idea of turning around to drive back and pick up the Airstream only three weeks later. Then we remembered seeing a post in the KYD Insider's private Facebook group about renting a tow vehicle. Although it was a bit more expensive than we thought it would be, it was a major time-saver. Plus, we wanted to try it out to see if it was a viable solution for the community, and we thought it was. We were toying around with the idea of changing our RV to something more suitable for just the two of us, but the timing had to be perfect! After all, we're leaving in late March and will be on the road for most of the year. Once we hit the road, our window for buying and selling an RV would be closed. It's hard to make big changes when we're traveling and dates or events are locked in place. To our surprise, the exact Airstream (and year) we wanted showed up in a new listing, and we immediately called. After discussing price and timing, we decided to change our route to go through Visalia, CA, so we could check it out. We got started with repairs on the first night. During our self-inspection, we knew there was an issue with the voltage. We also identified a few minor issues in other systems. Because we knew we'd likely be modifying these systems anyway, we were not too uptight about it. However, it would have been good to show the "proper" process of buying a used RV... and not our approach. We'd like to make a video about buying & selling RVs, so we'll try to include that "how-to" information then. Overall, we're thrilled with this new model, and we've already started making small modifications. For those who wondered why we stayed with an Airstream, it's just the most suitable RV for how we travel. It offers us enough space to stay comfortable for months on the road, but it's small enough that we can camp inside the national parks. Probably not, but Airstreams can talk to him! Rivets and panel separation tell a story, and if you pay close attention, those walls can talk. This is not the first time we've experienced what's called Front End Separation (FES). If you recall, this happened to our first RV, and it was (kinda) repaired in Mexico. Basically, we applied a bandaid, but didn't fix the root issue. Vinnie is good at evaluating what's happening with a trailer's frame to uncover the root cause of FES. He then corrects the issue by reinforcing the front end, which involves welding a semi-custom template to add support and tying the shell to the camper and—ultimately—to the frame. Even if you don't have an Airstream, you may enjoy seeing how Vinnie's North Bay Airstream Repair approaches this issue and generates a solution. It's hard to grasp how big this tree really is, even when you're standing directly in front of it. And yet visiting Sequoia NP goes beyond just the giant trees. Driving through the park is equally stunning, and driving through Sequoia National Park's Tunnel Log is a classic Summer To Remember® list item! Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, about 5 minutes from the tunnel log was Moro Rock. The trail was chiseled by the National Park Service and felt like a spiral staircase leading to a 360-degree view at the top. Sure, the pictures we saw looked perfect—but these days, filters and AI can make just about everything look perfect. Videos can have selective editing, for that matter, but we really do our best to share a true reflection of our experience. That being said, we've learned that experiences can vary greatly due to many factors out of our control.All of which is a long way of saying that Venice surprised us. When it comes to creating the best possible experience at a new (and popular) destination, we've learned to avoid the main attraction as the first stop. In this case, if we'd gone straight to St. Mark's Square, we might have been turned off by the crowds and touristy nature of the attraction. Instead, we took a casual walk to a more local part of Venice. We chose a restaurant based on a recommendation from the person who checked us into our vacation rental. We did end up visiting St. Mark's Square later—and we weren't overly impressed. Luckily, it wasn't our first impression. We ended up going back late that night for what seemed like a private concert. These experiences can't be planned. We've learned to go with the flow and stay open to exploring with no pressing agenda. If you recall our Alaska recap episode, we identified the five types of travelers: Adventurer, Naturist, Conqueror, Historian, and Boondocker. It's important to know what kind of traveler you are, and equally important to know what kind of traveler you're getting advice from. When it comes to Florance, the Historians will love the history, art, and museums. The adventurer would question why they were there in the first place! Of course, we also learned that the first impression of a new destination is also critical to leaving a lasting impression. No matter how nice a place is, it's hard to get past a bad first impression. One thing is for certain - the best memories are not found, they are created. And spontaneity is the secret sauce! When planning your trip (anywhere) leave a little room for spontaneity. Stumbling across a place to eat, hike, or do something silly will likely be what you remember the most. You know what the Selna looks like. ℹ️ About the Episode: When it comes to planning a big trip, it's only natural to have all the details mapped out. For the first week of our big Italian "Empty Nesting" trip, we had each night planned months in advance. After all, we're noobs when it comes to travel abroad! So when our bed & breakfast canceled the pre-paid reservation we'd made in January the night before... we couldn't believe it.As disappointed as we were, we knew Europe would be no different than any of our RV trips in the States. We knew in our gut that what we'd come up with instead would be equal to or better than our original plans—and we were right! This abrupt change of plans gave us the confidence to wing it. Not having expectations can often lead to being pleasantly surprised at the smallest outcomes rather than saying, “Hmm… I thought it would be more/less ________ ” (fill in the blank). We found a charming town we’d heard of while planning but had decided to skip. As it turned out, Alberobello, Italy, is exactly what we needed: a charming small town that wasn’t crawling with tourists, plus good food and a laid-back local vibe. We extended our stay to three nights and used our time to adjust to the time zone and enjoy each other’s company in this quiet town. Assisi, Italy, was also on our list of places to visit, but we would have only visited for a day trip. Now that we weren't locked into our original plans, we could spend the night. Experiencing the town after all the tourists left was much like Mackinac Island—quiet and peaceful. If you watched that episode, you met Winston, a twenty-five-year-old with Cerebral Palsy who came to RAGBRAI to ride solo. We met him in the breakfast line on the second day and invited him to ride with us. Little did we know that we would ride all the way to the Mississippi River with him! Trish found her stride in this episode. In part 1, we followed the crowd to the RV dry camping area, only to be asphyxiated by fumes. It didn't take long to learn that you don't want to be the only person not running a generator in the generator lot! After night one, we realized that we were better off taking the path less traveled. When planning for RAGBRAI, we didn't know what to expect. We had no reservations and no idea how close to the starting line we needed to be. As it turned out, if we camped roughly 15 minutes from the "overnight town," we would be fine. There were many options within that distance, and as the ride continued, it only got easier to find campgrounds with power, water or both. Trish became more comfortable handling the RV set-up process, even if it took a few tries. This is why traveling by RV is so rewarding. In previous seasons, we had issues getting back into the States due to accidentally smuggling oranges. This time, our entire rig might be full of Canadian Kit Kat bars 😍 That isn't the only Canadian delicacy we tried. We also had the Donair, which is a lot like a gyro, but with a sweet secret sauce and sauteed onions and tomatoes. But this episode isn't all about food... Nova Scotia has many other secrets with it comes to its diverse landscape and historical sites. We took a guided canoeing trip down the Mersey River inside Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site before making our way around the southern region of Nova Scotia to meet friends. We then drove through the area that was affected by the fires on our way to Halifax. Wolfville is located in Annapolis Valley, which is the wine region of the province and a great place to visit vineyards, enjoy the charming town, and relax. We've been living in the Airstream since February, so we took a 48-hour break to live in a dome. We've never stayed in a dome before, but this one didn't seem like the standard edition. Trish provided a dome tour before Chef Karina arrived to cook dinner. In this episode, we share some thoughts on our planning process for visiting Nova Scotia. We'll go into more detail at the end of this season, but for now, we want to share some resources that have been helpful. We also visit Digby, Nova Scotia, home to a large scallop and lobster fishing fleet and world-renowned for their delicious Digby scallops. We can confirm that the best scallop we've ever had was in Digby! We also fix our water heater in this episode ... again. This time, it was a new problem and an easy fix. Salmon fillets 2 Cups Julienne Vegetables 2 Tbsp. Compound Butter 4 Sprigs of Dill or other Herbs Salt & Pepper to taste. Procedure: 1. Cut out a piece of parchment in a heart shape. The piece must be big enough to hold the fish and still have room for crimping the edges. Oil the parchment and place oiled side down on work surface. Repeat 3 more times. 2. Place the vegetables on the right side of the heart. Place butter and salmon over the vegetables. Season with salt & pepper and top with herbs. 3. Fold and crimp the parchment paper starting at the top left working your way around to the bottom to create a tight seal. 4. Place packages on a sheet pan. 5. Place in a preheated 400 F degree oven and bake for 10-12 minutes. Package should puff up and parchment should have some colour. 6. Cut the parchment open and garish with sauce. Serve immediately. That turned out to be the right decision because not only are the first under control, but the visibility is nearly back to normal. We've really enjoyed our time in Canada so far and we can tell already this is going to be a great season with stunning shots of the diverse landscape. When we first started RVing, it was more about visiting new places and having adventures than "camping." The kids were also younger, making it harder to entertain them with the wilderness alone. But as we traveled more and the kids left the nest, we learned to appreciate camping in state and national parks. Without question, that's our preferred camping style today. In this episode, we encourage RVers to get to know their personal dry camping limitations and the limitations of their RV before investing in a solar system. It's essential to get to know your RV and how you like to camp off-grid so you can find an appropriate budget for solar. The first question to answer is: do you even like dry camping?
