In this session at the 2025 RNDS, Drs. Yuri Shishido and Avjola Hoxha covered the psychiatric and cognitive challenges that arise from rare neuroimmune disorders. Anxiety, particularly about the disorder or treatment, is common. Depression and episodes of sadness can also require treatment, as well as ADHD resulting in an inability to focus and complete tasks. They discussed whether these mental illnesses are linked to the circumstances of living with a rare neuroimmune disorder alone, or the brain’s physical state in disorders that cause brain lesions.

They also explained how neuropsychologists go about their evaluations, considering the family history of mental disorders, behavior, and that physical factor. Audience members asked questions including how brain fog factors into these evaluations, what to do about an onset of ADHD-like symptoms and whether this is linked to MOGAD, and navigating an extreme fear of needles.
