On Wednesday, April 29th, the Faculty of Medicine Admissions and Keku'tmasiek Ta'n Tel Welo'ltimk (We Are Learning To Be Well) hosted an information session regarding the Indigenous admissions pathway in Dalhousie medicine.

Dr. Andrea Rideout, Assistant Dean of Admissions, and Carolyn Doyle, Admissions Administrator, gave the presentation, along with Dr. Brent Young, Academic Director of Indigenous Health, who joined online. Accompanied by current Indigenous Medical student panellists Kalei Crowell, Jordin Fletcher, and Alex Marshall who shared their experiences with the Indigenous admissions process.

The Indigenous Admissions Pathway seeks to identify, mitigate, and break down unjust barriers Indigenous people face on their journey to medical school. The admissions process is overseen by a sub-committee, including an Elder, community leaders, and medical professionals. Priority is given to Mi'kmaw, Wolastoqiyik, Peskotomuhkati, and other Indigenous applicants from the Maritimes with strong community ties, though applicants from other Indigenous communities across Canada are also considered. The application process with this pathway includes self-identification requirements which must be certified by a relevant professional. If an applicant cannot submit those requirements they may submit a statement with supporting documents. False claims of indigeneity or fraudulent behaviour will be investigated. For eligibility, applicants must adhere to the academic requirements of the admissions pathway, along with this the MCAT is fairly optional. Non-academic requirements also must be met which include in-person interviews, the CASPer, personal statements, and relevant supplemental forms.
