People seem to be increasingly looking for ways to cut back and detox. It’s ironic: iPhone software is now designed to inform you about your screen time in an effort to help you decrease it, and yet all apps are continually made more addictive. Novelty is fast and seductive, and tech companies know we will not resist a glistening new technology until too late—it will be already irrevocably integrated into our daily life. The result is a feeling of whiplash, sometimes even guilt and embarrassment for not having seen it coming. It’s natural to long for a “simpler” time, but what time is that? The younger generation is nostalgic for a time pre-smartphones and pre-Internet, a time most of them didn’t even experience first hand but yet yearn for nonetheless. We know the drill: The technologies of today no longer simply facilitate communication but rather distort our reality. The platforms we utilize prioritize clicks, likes, and views, trapping and limiting us. When fake news and propaganda inundate our feeds, the companies that run these platforms throw their hands up, hiding behind the First Amendment. Since the technologies upon which our society now sits are failing us, do we need new ones? Old ones? New laws? Less of both? A stronger democracy? Stronger individuals?Here are some more of the questions that we will ask: How can we guarantee agency over our future? Should we join the wave of neo-Luddites? Is this version of opting-out the only option? Given how much of our lives are built around technology, is it even an option? Does our ability to connect with others and advance our careers depend too heavily on technology to allow us to opt-out? Is progress for the sake of progress sustainable? What is progress? Why are so many people craving earlier modes of existence? Does a perfect point of technological development exist? Is nostalgia a feeling that can be trusted? Should technological progress be controlled by corporations alone? What did Covid teach us about the mutability of our mode of existence? The aunt you wish you had | Jason Moran on Joan Jonas The Museum of Modern Art 2024-04-23 | We visited acclaimed jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran at his home in Harlem to talk with him about artist Joan Jonas’ earliest performance works, “Songdelay” (1973). Filmed with a cast of performers in downtown New York near the Hudson River, the work explores how sound travels and can be distorted. To Moran, it presents many ideas of what songs can be.Moran and Jonas are almost like family, with close to twenty years of collaborative experience. While performing on his piano at home, he reflects on how their musical kinship has impacted his work’s purpose.“Joan is like everything to me,” he says. “Joan listens to your stories and then she tells them back to you in another way. The back of a Martin Wong painting unlocks the history of graffiti art | HOW TO SEE The Museum of Modern Art 2024-04-16 | This short documentary tells the unknown story of how the back of this painting got covered in graffiti. Before Martin Wong's painting "Houston Street" became part of our collection, rumors circulated about another artwork on its back. When our team replaced the stretcher, they had a chance to study a hidden piece that hadn’t been seen in over 40 years. We invited graffiti artist Sharp (Aaron Goodstone) to the conservation lab to see the painting for the first time since it was shown in 1983. He and filmmaker Charlie Ahearn (Wild Style) share their personal memories of Wong, the impact of his friendship and art, and this intense period in downtown New York. Conversations with conservators, photographs and research discoveries from Wong’s archives, and Ahearn’s video footage of Wong painting in his cramped apartment studio unearth lost paintings and the hidden and moving story of Wong’s “Houston Street.”The artist Martin Wong bridged the graffiti art, poetry, and gallery scenes; his drawings and paintings depict the streets and characters around him on the Lower East Side of New York City, where he moved in 1978. It was a period of creative liberation but also financial struggle and the rise of the AIDS epidemic. Wong was a magnetic figure on the underground scene: openly gay, generous, and wildly creative. Whenever he sold work, he put the money back into supporting other artists, building an enormous graffiti art collection (what he called “aerosol hieroglyphics”), which he showcased in his short-lived Museum of American Graffiti. “We might see his work in the same kind of constellation as Keith Haring or Jean-Michel Basquiat –– art that was often both for and about public space, the street,” explains curator Michelle Kuo.Wong’s “Houston Street,” 1986 is a major work. At eight by thirteen feet and hung to touch the ground, it forms an eerie trompe l'oeil double of the rolling gates that secure shops at night along the block that it is named for. When the painting recently entered MoMA’s collection, its stretcher had to be replaced and conservators and curators had a chance to study something they only had an inkling of: a painting on the back. In 1983, Wong painted the thirteen-foot length of the back of the canvas in his signature brick-by-brick, and then asked his friends, graffiti artists Sharp and Delta 2, to spray paint over it, tagging it like a real wall. Not only exceptional circumstances but even daily routine can push someone beyond the threshold. Keeping those reactions at bay and displaying grace under pressure demonstrates an individual’s poise, dignity, elegance, and sang-froid. Some individuals need it for their jobs, and even make a career out of it. Think of surgeons, astronauts, or diplomats: their ability to exhibit grace under intense pressure can be a matter of life or death. And yet, everybody should learn the ropes, both individually and collectively. History demands as much.These are some of the questions we will ask: What is grace in a social context? What does it then mean to display grace collectively? Should we be graceful as democracy is threatened and divisions across political party lines have intensified? Are their instances in which more knee-jerk, vehement reactions are preferable? Is there a connection between this concept and soft power? And non-violence? When does grace turn into acquiescence? Should we, as a society, react gracefully to the pressure of reckoning with the climate catastrophe and ecological devastation we have wrought upon ourselves and our planet? The complexity and density of our interconnectedness is operating at a planetary scale with planetary consequences. For the first time, we are inextricably linked by each of our individual actions which cascade and multiply through a network of compounding consequences. Scale | MoMA R&D Salon 46 | MoMA LIVE The Museum of Modern Art 2024-01-30 | In its size and complexity, the universe we inhabit exists at a scale that is fundamentally ungraspable by humans. We have therefore developed tools of perception and abstraction in the attempt to better comprehend it and our position within it. With each revolution in thought or scientific innovation—from Copernicus’s heliocentric model to the invention of the microscope to the detonation of the first nuclear bomb—comes the need to dramatically reconfigure our sense of scale and place. In today’s world, the digital storage of the touchstones of our daily lives (documents, messages, books, music, movies, etc.) evades our ability to fathom its volume through visual or embodied perception. Scale is no longer just a function of size but rather more so now of complexity, thereby evading the scope of our current tools. Though the Eameses’ dream is now literally at our fingertips with our ability to zoom with abandon, what new tools for understanding are necessary to invent in order to address our contemporary issues of scale?Here are some of the questions we will ask: How has our perception of scale changed over time? How have scientific milestones contributed to that shift? What shifts will come next? What is our place in the universe? How can we fully come to terms with its scale? Are we in a crisis of perception? With the ever-increasing complexity of our world, will we ever be able to fully comprehend it? Do we even need to? Should our actions depend upon this comprehension? How can we grapple with phenomena such as the climate crisis? In what ways has scale become an issue of complexity over size? Egg | MoMA R&D Salon 45 | MoMA LIVE The Museum of Modern Art 2023-12-05 | The egg is a universal symbol of life across cultures and religions––and then of hope, purity, prosperity, and engineered perfection. The simplicity of both the object and the word hides a wondrous complexity of meanings and values. As a food versatile in its uses and rich in flavor while also being nutritionally lavish, the chicken egg finds its place both in meals of decadence and of scarcity. At the global scale, it is so fundamental to every table as to have called for massive industrial production, with great ethical and ecological consequences. As a design feat, its shell is fragile yet strong, engineered to be broken by a hatchling from within but not by an adult that sits atop. More broadly, the egg cell is the progenitor for all forms of animal life, and is thus a symbolic center for many contentious debates around motherhood, genetics, and the question of what constitutes life. The egg even further complicates our notions of time itself––see the pervasive chicken-or-egg dilemma, for instance––as an object that paradoxically becomes its own cause and effect. And these are only a few angles of approach. With its complexities and contradictions, the egg can lead to an examination of some of society’s most ancient and most urgent quandaries. These are some of the questions we will ask: With so much of the food we eat relying on the ingredient of eggs, what are the potential consequences of their scarcity? Can the egg be a tool to lift people out of poverty? Can they ever become scarce? What are the many manifestations of the egg as a semiotic gateway? What can we learn from the ways in which the use of eggs changes across cultures? What can engineering and material science learn from the egg shell? What can nature teach us about efficiency in design? What is perfection? How is motherhood defined? Can the value of an egg cell be defined, and who should benefit from it? Is there a point at which human intervention in the process of reproduction becomes unethical? What is the role of the egg in the narration of evolution? Team Sports | MoMA R&D Salon 44 | MoMA LIVE The Museum of Modern Art 2023-10-18 | A team is distinct from other social bonds as the unifying element is the shared pursuit of a common goal, whether it be winning a World Cup, achieving a scientific breakthrough, or winning an election. Often, however, the relationship between teammates, their leaders, and their supporters extends far beyond the mere pursuit of a goal. A team quickly becomes a microcosm of broader societal phenomena, as issues such as power, gender, race, sexuality, and class come into play. Individual vs. collective, collaboration vs. competition, offense vs. defense, success vs. failure, inclusion vs. exclusion––when we become part of a team, we learn to negotiate a number of contrasting conditions. Teams rely on complex algorithms and alchemies and when properly designed, expertly trained, and wholeheartedly inspired, they are greater than the sum of their parts. This Salon explores the ways in which they can simultaneously function as mirrors of society and means to change it for the better.These are some of the questions we will ask: How does participation in required team sports affect a child’s development in both positive and negative ways? How do team sports reinforce societal and gendered norms? In what ways can they instead be used to challenge those norms? What does it mean to be a good team player, within and without sports? How do our experiences as a part of teams impact our subsequent social relations? Should we adopt a more team-centric outlook in our daily lives, prioritizing collective over individual goals? How does the participation in or the watching of sports contribute to the formation of our individual identities? A master printer makes his last print The Museum of Modern Art 2023-10-17 | What makes a 500-year-old printing process new? Master printer and publisher Jacob Samuel has brought etchings—prints created by transferring ink from a metal plate to paper—into the 21st century through collaborations with more than 60 contemporary artists. In this video, we filmed Samuel making his last print. As he inks, hand wipes, and rolls his final print through the press, he reflects on his philosophy. “My goal is to leave no fingerprints,” he says. All you see is the artist’s work. I’m just another pencil. I’m just another brush. But I want the pencil to be sharpened really well. I want the brush to be sable. Traces | MoMA R&D Salon 43 | MoMA LIVE The Museum of Modern Art 2023-09-20 | Traces considers the markings, echoes, or remnants that record the fleeting existence of an event, thing, or person. In most cases, the traces we value are those that can be verified and validated, and thereby formally documented within established systems of legitimization. With recent advances in artificial intelligence especially, what was previously considered to be evidence can no longer evade our rightful caution and suspicion. A photograph, for example, cannot automatically be assumed to be a factual and objective documentation of a live event—and now neither can a voice recording, video, or signature. Under this crisis of truth, we must reevaluate and reconsider what traces we can trust and what knowledge we can depend on.Some of the questions we will ask: What can previously overlooked traces tell us about past people, places, things, and events? What new forms of knowledge can be produced by paying attention to those traces that we previously looked past? How must we rethink the representation we trust to hold truth in the current age of falsification? What new literacies must we develop to become more attuned to the latent yet unseen traces around us? Does every object, event, or person leave a trace? How can we learn to see the unseen? Can knowledge about the traces left behind be more impactful than knowledge about the thing itself? How can we become more aware of the traces we leave behind, whether they are social, emotional, environmental, ecological, etc? Common phrases such as “for the common good” or “towards the greater good” mean well, but fail to specify for whom and in what form such good is pursued. Good is perhaps best described through this ambiguity and multiplicity, with its only constant being the fact that across time and space, it has consistently meant different things to different people and groups. As we reflect on the past five years, which have brought to the fore with renewed sharpness the systemic issues that afflict our planet, the need to discuss the idea of good is impellent.These are some of the questions we will ask: Who decides what ”good” is? When photography conservation is detective work | CONSERVATION STORIES The Museum of Modern Art 2023-05-19 | Watch a video about conservators and scientists trying to save an artwork from itself.Rosângela Rennó’s Wedding Landscape (1996) is made up of layers of large sheets of plexiglass, to which the artist glued strips of negatives she retrieved from a wedding photography studio in Havana in 1994. Before the work went on view in Chosen Memories, a survey of Latin American contemporary art currently on view at MoMA, our photography conservators made a routine assessment of the work’s condition. What they found—and the best way to treat it—turned out to be anything but routine.“Materials of film are generally held in an archive. So they’re typically not put on display,” explains Craig Kamrath, a photography conservation fellow, “But in this instance, the film is what you’re there to look at, these strips of negatives.”Photography conservator Lee Ann Daffner was baffled: “When I first saw this work, I didn’t know what to think, because we had so many questions.” For one, there was a white, powdery substance appearing throughout the layers of plexiglass. Was it mold, or the dreaded “plexi disease” that can occur when a piece of plexiglass abrades, or something else? Daffner and Kamrath worked with conservation scientist Catherine H. Stephens and conservation science fellow Kyna Biggs to take samples and analyze them. But then another problem presented itself: these negatives, made of cellulose acetate, have a limited shelf life before they begin degrading. Thorough detective work needed to be done to determine the age of the negatives and how much acetic acid they were off-gassing, a sign of their decay. And was the plexiglass helping or hurting their condition?“We’re right on the doorstep with this artwork,” Kamrath said. As we go about our daily lives, we are constantly enacting performances of self, adapting them to fit the nuances of each audience we encounter. If theaters have not been the only sites for performance for centuries, the advent of digital technology has further displaced the performer and their audience across time and space. Immersive architecture of aquariums | BUILT ECOLOGIES: ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENT The Museum of Modern Art 2023-04-03 | Our video series on architecture and environment continues with a look at how the New England Aquarium's architect made an "aquatic museum.""The aquarium is a dark magic box that would have power—theatrical impact, emotional experience," says Peter Chermayeff, "and that could be immersive or that would surround you and make you feel you were in a world underwater. An aquatic museum."The Giant Ocean Tank occupied the building’s center; it was surrounded by a series of concrete columns that acted as a supporting structure. The columns were bound to a spiral ramp, which created a compression ring to hold the massive volume of water. Spaced about five feet apart, towering glass windows formed niches that gave visitors the sensation of having a private viewing space. AI Art: How artists are using and confronting machine learning | HOW TO SEE LIKE A MACHINE The Museum of Modern Art 2023-03-15 | For the latest episode of our How to See series, we spoke with three artists—Kate Crawford, Trevor Paglen, and Refik Anadol—who engage with the ways that AI and machine learning algorithms are demanding new approaches to artmaking.“I think we are at a crucial inflection point right now,” says Kate Crawford, professor, artist, and author of "Atlas of AI." “I've been calling it the generative turn. It's a moment where what we previously understood as how everything from illustration to film directing to publishing works is allabout to change very rapidly.”Trevor Paglen has been mining data sets that are used to train the machine learning systems that surveil our daily lives. He investigates the dangerous oversimplification inherent to these processes and the ethics of the intentions behind them. “Artists, what we bring to the party is thousands…of years of thinking about what the hell an image is,” he says. “The kind of engineering computer science tradition does not have that. This is a place where artists are bringing voices to the conversation that I think are quite urgent.”It’s in that spirit that Refik Anadol sees AI as a tool available to artists.
