Most of the video was filmed before Christmas, and I think I lost some footage, so I jump to several things having been done. This is more of a reflective video about the process but hopefully still useful to people wanting to do a similar thing.

It uses larger HGR15 rails and two thicknesses of Valchromat plates. I’m actually going to recreate the machine you’ll see at the end, as a smaller 600x600 rail model which I’ll replace the current smaller one - and in the process write the manual. The manual has been something I’ve mentioned on and off several time but each time I took a step forward I noticed something which prevented me from committing the design in writing. It's an interesting device and has forced me to learn more about programming. Here are my thoughts.
Note: I was using RRF V 2.03 during this video - the latest version is 3.2beta2 where many of the issues I mentioned have been resolved. I am currently building a new controller and will documented the changes.

It worked so well during maker central 2019 I had to unplug it.

I also wire up the stepper drivers and prepare the second galvanised plate for the output relay modules. I fit 24v LED back-lit buttons for the inputs, and test the amended firmware, running a g-code job and how the machine responds.

I didn't make a series of videos about the machine itself, which I will come back to, but I wanted to share the work involved in the control box as I am planning to make use of some interesting features. Hopefully we'll both (audience and myself) learn a let in the process. Anyway this is just the introduction so it will get more meaty.

It's a little different from the previous ones in that I'm paring down the design and overall part count. I want this machine to be something that is easy and low cost to produce, but rigid and reliable enough to allow it to be a practical teaching tool. I'm using SFU1204 ballscrews and MGN12 linear rails - and cut the plates out myself the machine I previously finished.

I’ll also talk about the advantages of using these methods, and how the latter method effects bit changing and setting up cutting jobs. I’ll also mention some of the macros settings on my CNC control software which allow me to work and change between bits more easily. And at the end of the video I perform a repeatability test by homing the z axis and performing a probe cycle – looking at the tolerance of the procedure.
Note: G92 Position Register / Set Position commands will reset if a M30 command is executed at the end of a g-code job, or if the GRBL soft stop is pressed. This will effect restarting jobs. Instead of G92 it is recommended to use a G10 Set Tool Offset / Programmable Data Input command instead.

I also perform some cuts and fine calibrating the CNC machine steps as best I can. I prefer to calibrate the machine based on cuts and not simply movement. The method I use is one I developed myself. I cut four variations of a simple square, starting with two squares with the shapes orientated so their sides are parallel to the x and y axes – with one cut on the outside of the vector line, and the other along the inside. I also cut two additional squares, again with inside and outside cuts, but this time rotating the squares at 45 degrees. What should be identical will most likely reveal they are not, and you can now adjust either the squares of the axis, or steps to produce shapes that are more similar. Because the method of cutting are different, they use different parts of the machine to produce the same shapes. Because I got the x and y axes pretty parallel, the first shape was square (that is the faces were at 90 degrees to each-other) but one side was longer than the other. The rotated shapes revealed the issue with the steps needing calibration when the faces were not at 90 degrees.
Step Calculation: (current steps * distance travelled in software) / distance measured on material

It worked well enough but there were a few occasions where I had some issues – and one persistent issue. The persistent issue was losing the z-coordinates after cancelling a job mid-cut. It wasn’t noticeable with simple cuts but meant I had to constantly reset my material height each time I went to cut. Since rebuilding that behaviour has stopped. The other issues were rarer and made worse after hastily wiring the machine to the controller. While cutting a 3D file out the z axis began to raise upwards until it hit into the hard limit switch, and the job also just stopped randomly. 1. Removing the selector PWM and power switch which connected to a laser engraver, and generally shortening and simplifying cable wiring where possible, 2. Rewired all stepper motors and spindle with continuous cables -removing aviation panel mounts and JST connectors, and using SY cable for spindle. 3. I rewired the VFD power – going from the filter to the terminal block based on how I saw clough42 do it – will link to his video: youtube.com/watch?v=DJfiOqaeFDg 4. I added ferrite cores to the spindle-power cable, USB and power-in cable. 5. Connecting the earth on the spindle to its housing, 6. Used a single 24v power supply unit instead of the three I had installed before. 7. Replaced voltage regulator with opto-isolators/couplers between the homing proximity sensors and their terminals on controller, 8. Re-wiring all the earthing to single connection point (which I thought I had done but I done it differently this time), 9. Re-tightening all terminal screws making sure there wasn't any loose connections, This is the main the gist of what I had done, but I also mention a few other things in the video – such as the choice of material for the fixing plate for all the electronics.

I also show a few linear slider rails that I got at the beginning which I think I use for the next variation of the machine.
In this video I put together a prototype of the CNC machine I’ve been working on, with all the design tweaks and innovations. I’ve incorporated hard limits to the Motor Plates, which can be adjusted to provide a surface to square the X axis to the Y axis, and pivoting mounts for the Z and X Axis, so the machine can be trammed without having to dismantle and awkwardly shim hard to reach places.
I’ve also made this version of the machine with drop in hexagonal nut holes, so the plates can be cut from other material such as Birch Ply, Valchromat or Acetal, without the need to cut threads. While PLA is probably not the right material to make a CNC machine, and PETG would be better, I want to see if I can get at least a couple cuttings from this machine.
Early release of Plates STL files and parts list will be on my Patreons, and later the SLT files will be made available on the Openbuilds blog that has accompanied this project.

When I tried to print the larger prints one side was more compressed than the other.
Equation for calibrating steps: The steps you asked it to move divided by the number of steps it actually moved, the total of which timed by the number of steps in the firmware. For example I asked the extruder to retract 100mm. It only retracted 97mm. My steps were 800. 100/97)*800=824.7422
I also noticed the PWM range jumping from off to nearly 50% before allowing for a variable range up to 5v. When I built the CNC controller I added a toggle button to allow me to switch between the PWM set in Gcode and a potentiometer. Also as my spindle is air-cooled the 2.2v initial variable speed, meant I was actually using the spindle at the correct minimum RPM so if I had noticed, which I can’t remember, it wasn’t a problem. But now that I am installing a laser I have the problem of not reaching the full rage of the PWM. This may be normal behaviour but I can’t get a clear answer and I really need to check the GRBL firmware on a plan Arduino to see if it’s my controller, something to do with how installed it or set up the firmware.
Photos: http://instagram.com/savvas_papasavva Main Channel: http://www.youtube.com/SavvasPapasavva Website: http://www.miscpro.com3D-Printed Hanging Disc - Parametric DesignEducating Savvas2018-02-28 | This is just a quick video description of a parametric 3D model of a hanging disc which can be 3D printed. The idea is you can drill a couple holes at the back of a piece of sheet material with two forstner bits, and the disc can fit in place, be screwed down and be accepted onto a screw secured on a wall.
So I agreed to have another crack with the 3D printer reviews. I ended up with a few more than I expected so here goes. Assembling the reviewing has oddly become a valuable way to dramatically expanding my experience with FDM printing.

So I added Hard Y stops to prevent this happening again, but also to correct my mistake and tend to my ego, square the CNC machine and attempt to fast cut aluminium. And I got it cutting really fast.
