Bach - Chorale Christum wir sollen loben schon BWV 121/1 - Blache | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-12-22 | Bach based his chorale Christum wir sollen loben schon - part of his cantata of the same name, BWV 121 - on a hymn by Martin Luther from 1524. This was in turn based on the Latin hymn A solis ortus cardine, by Caelius Sedulius from ca 450. For this recording soprano Viola Blache made a personal version, based on Bach, Luther and the original hymn. The decor is Vermeer's Milkmaid who steps out of her frame after an age-long lockdown and seems almost to be singing to herself. Bach reused the music from his Orchestral Suite no. 4 in D major, BWV 1069, but added another choir and four soloists to it, to greet the newborn Child in festive spirit. Bach - WTC II Prelude and fugue no. 8 in D-sharp minor BWV 877 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-12-01 | Although the location for this recording is unusual, it fits the prelude and fugue in D-sharp minor well. A very strict prelude in a very strict ambience: the old universitary Anatomiegebouw (Anatomy Building) for veterinary research. The fugue that follows is long and tough and clearly a work that needs patience - just like the scientific research carried out in the building.Twenty years after his first collection of music in every key imaginable, Bach completed a second 'Wohltemperirte Clavier'. We recorded his first book of Preludes and Fugues at the homes of 24 different musicians. Life on earth was a cesspit of afflictions – one long string of laments, complaints, worries and moans. At the end, a heavenly reward awaited you, if you were lucky. But how could you be sure you would receive it? This question instilled great fear in the congregations of Bach’s time. Believers faced the challenge of retaining hope throughout those fears. In this dialogue cantata - 'O Ewigkeit, du Donnerwort' performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society directed by Shunske Sato - Fear and Hope literally battle it out. Bach - Choral Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht BWV 335 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-11-10 | BWV 335 is Bach’s four-part version of the old Gregorian hymn Rex Christe factor omnium. BWV 335 is the only time Bach used this chorale melody. His version is known only from the books of four-part chorales that were published after his death. This version appears twice in the series, once with the title Herr Jesu Christ, mein Lebens Licht. It is not known why Bach combined the melody of Rex Christe factor omnium with this text. Maybe the chorale is the only surviving final section of a lost cantata. The prelude of BWV 875 from the Wohltemperirte Clavier II is a moto perpetuo of runs that rush at one another without colliding. The fugue juxtaposes fast and slow movements. All of this in the soccer stadium of FC Utrecht. Like a brightly coloured peacock’s tail, the prelude unfolds in a triumphant upward movement. Followed by a complex, but surprisingly catchy fugue in a grand architecture, for optimal dramatic effect. All of this in a theatre in the home town of the Netherlands Bach Society. Masterclass young talents - Introduction baroque cello - January 2022 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-10-26 | Once every two or three years, the Netherlands Bach Society organises a talent development project for gifted young musicians under the age of 18, in collaboration with specialised partners. The projects, which focus on the performance practice of Bach’s music, allows us to bring talented youngsters into contact with historical performance practice and give them deeper insight into Bach’s music. In this project, we worked with cellists and baroque cellists of the future. Six very talented Dutch youngsters under the age of eighteen were selected from auditions to take three masterclasses about the baroque cello, playing continuo and Bach’s Cello Suites, given by Lucia Swarts. Each cellist rehearsed their own movement from Suite No. 3, which they then recorded for All of Bach. The project was set up in collaboration with the Cello Biënnale Amsterdam and received support from the Dutch Musical Instruments Foundation. Bach - Motet O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht BWV 118 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-10-20 | Sometimes – viewed from our current performance perspective – Bach gets in his own way a bit: unclear genres and unusual instruments make his work interesting, but also difficult to place at times. A good example of this is O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht. As a consequence of this BWV 118 is performed relatively infrequently, for which there is no musical reason whatsoever. This solo is based on a passage in a Prelude by Dietrich Buxtehude, one of the greatest organists of the day, with whom Bach himself studied. Bach - WTC II Prelude and fugue no. 3 in C-sharp major BWV 872 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-10-04 | This Prelude and fugue in C-sharp major performed by Christine Schornsheim is part of the second book of the 'Wohltemperirte Clavier'. For the third prelude in the WTC II, Bach harked back to a figure he used in such legendary fashion to open WTC I: rolling arpeggios. The prelude ends in a short fughetta with a French undertone, which exudes the joy of composition. Just before the final chord, like an echo from the arpeggios, some newly written bars appear, in which the music shifts harmonically at great speed. Whereas the fughetta invites a flowing legato, the fugue cries out for staccato, so that the theme contrasts nicely with the runs (and runs, and more runs) that follow. Bach - Sonata for violin and harpsichord no. 1 in B minor BWV 1014 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-09-29 | This Sonata for violin and harpsichord no. 1 in B minor, performed here by Bojan Čičić and Steven Devine for All of Bach, is the first in a set of six that Bach probably wrote during his years in Köthen. The slow opening section immediately shows Bach’s ambitions for the whole set. He reveals himself at his most expressive, and there is also room for virtuosity and complexity. For instance, after the melancholic introduction by the harpsichord, the violin enters in a lament with a long motionless note and proceeds to descend in a resigned garland of notes. A little later, the violin even becomes two-part, creating a five-part interaction between the two instruments. It is precisely this combination of expressiveness, virtuosity and compositional mastery that explains why these sonatas have not fallen into oblivion. We don’t know whether Bach intended the music as material for practice or performance. The order of the 18 sections is unclear as well and we don’t know whether the piece was ever completed.Shunske Sato made his own instrumentation for the Netherlands Bach Society. “I wanted to bring out the many colours of the work and of my ensemble. Every fugue has its own character. On the basis of the rhythm, time and chromatic lines, etc., you can determine which instrument is most suitable. I’ve studied each part very carefully, in order to decide which instruments are best to use. I wanted the whole Netherlands Bach Society to be heard, so the singers are taking part as well. They sing without words, to vowel sounds. When you introduce singers to the Art of Fugue, you can hardly ignore the example of the Swingle Singers. Bach - WTC II Prelude and fugue no. 2 in C minor BWV 871 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-09-08 | This Prelude and fugue in C minor, performed by Christine Schornsheim for All of Bach, is part of the second book of the 'Wohltemperirte Clavier'. Restlessly, the two parts in this Prelude pass the musical material back and forth to one another, alternating quick runs with an accompaniment full of leaps. The form is reminiscent of the first Invention, BWV 772, for example. The Fugue, too, is educational in character as a model of ‘partimento’; a sort of schematic method for providing interesting decoration to a musical motif.So what are two analytical works, almost finger exercises, doing in the second part of the Wohltemperirte Clavier? The answer is simple. What we see purely as an artistic highlight was regarded by Bach of equal importance as an exercise book for his students – a sample sheet of ideas and styles. It is nice to be performing this work in the Anatomiegebouw, which is traditionally a centre for research and education. The six sonatas, of which this is the last in the series, may have been arrangements of lost trio sonatas. Two later variations of this Sonata in G major have survived in several sources. The last one dates from the 1740’s, which is quite exceptional. In this sonata, Bach appears to have mixed and matched his music to his heart’s content. A Courante for harpsichord solo moved to the third movement of Partita no. 6 BWV 830, the versions differed in the order and even the number of their movements, and over the years Bach replaced most of the movements with new music (from his archive?). So it looked as if he still performed the sonata regularly. To make things easier, Shunske Sato and Diego Ares recorded all the versions – for the puzzlers, enthusiasts and completists among us. Bach - Partita no. 5 in G major BWV 829 - Albach | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-08-18 | This Partita in G major, performed here by Elina Albach for All of Bach, is the fifth of a set of six partitas. The piece begins with a movement that Bach called Praeambulum. It is actually a fantasia, a quasi improvised entrée that revolves mainly around simple scales and chords. The unusual title and the musical content make it seem like the start of a musical teaching method. After all, the practice of playing scales also has a history. In Bach’s day, fingering traditionally did not use the thumb, so keyboard players played and phrased scales differently to pianists today. However, this tradition was already changing at the time Bach was composing, and the scales in the first movement of this Partita in G major appear to ask the keyboard player: which fingering should you use?After the Praeambulum, the other movements demand attention for other aspects of the keyboard player’s fingers. For instance, the Allemande has evenly phrased triplets, and the Corrente and the Tempo di minuetta are studies in broken chords. Moreover, only the slow Sarabande is completely three-part. The Tempo di minuetto is even practically monophonic – no wonder that Robert Schumann used this as teaching material for his daughter Marie. At the end, in the Gigue, a full three-part development returns. And Bach pulls out all the stops for this closing section. The three pieces are composed around the long melodies of a ‘trope’: a standard hymn with extra texts, so in this case ‘Kyrie/Christe/Kyrie […] eleison’. Each piece is devoted to one facet of the Trinity, whereby Bach gives a symbolic place to the cantus firmus (the existing melody): first to God the Father in the soprano; then to God the Son among the voices in the tenor, and finally to God the Holy Ghost in the pedal bass.In this performance, Leo van Doeselaar chose to use the stop 'vox humana' with tremulant. Bach - Willst du dein Herz mir schenken BWV 518 - De Geyter | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-08-04 | The Notenbüchlein for Anna Magdalena Bach is a collection of different sorts of music by several composers. Besides pieces for harpsichord – preludes, partitas and various dances – it also includes a series of songs. Some are more spiritual in character and others more secular.This song, 'Willst du dein Herz mir schenken', belongs in the latter category. It is a love song in four strophes, in which the singer asks her lover to keep their love hidden and unspoken, because ‘being too free and feeling confident has already led often to danger” and now, too, “a false eye” is watching. In short, “the passion we enjoy must be a secret”. It is clearly a case of a hidden or forbidden love. A young couple with strict parents? An extramarital affair? Or maybe a lesbian romance? Bach, described this arrangement of a Christmas carol. And it is only too true. But what is it that bothers him exactly? To start with, the old chorale melody is in a minor key. Bach - Cantata Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben BWV 109 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-07-21 | Ambiguity and doubt resound in the opening of Bach’s cantata 'Ich glaube, lieber Herr, hilf meinem Unglauben', performed here by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach. The same applies to the subsequent recitative by the tenor and particularly the aria, with its indecisive rhythms and uncertain harmonies. But then the alto gives heart to the doubter: God will stand by his side in the battle, so that faith will win in the end. And just where you expect a simple chorale at the end of the cantata, suddenly you hear a grand arrangement with rousing orchestral accompaniment. Bach - Chorale Wie wohl ist mir BWV 517 - Blache | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-07-07 | This song, Wie wohl ist mir, is one of the songs in the music book for Anna Magdalena Bach, Johann Sebastian’s wife. Bach himself appreciated that Anna Magdalena had a good soprano voice, and she was originally a professional singer. Before the couple moved to Leipzig, she was receiving a good salary as a soprano on the payroll of the court in Köthen. In Leipzig, she had far less opportunity to sing in public.The music of Wie wohl ist mir, to words by Johann Christoph Dressler from 1692, is written as a fairly simple chorale for soprano and basso continuo. It is not certain whether it is actually a work by Johann Sebastian. The music could just as well have been composed by Anna Magdalena herself. Bach - Trio Sonata in G major BWV 1039 | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-06-23 | This Trio sonata for two flutes and basso continuo BWV 1039 also exists in a version for viola da gamba and harpsichord. Researchers suspect, however, that neither version is the original. It may originally have been a trio sonata for two violins and basso continuo, although it is far from certain. The final movement of the sonata also exists in a version for organ (BWV 1027a), dating from the 1730’s.The reason for all these different versions is clear: like the other trio sonatas, this is a balanced work full of nice melodic and harmonic inventions. So who wouldn’t want to play it? Although the other trio sonatas also exist in versions for different instruments, this is the only one for two flutes. In Bach’s day, the transverse flute, or traverso, was a popular instrument with the upper middle classes and the nobility, and this sonata gave (and still gives) the opportunity of enjoying Bach’s music to two flautists, rather than just one.Recorded for the project All of Bach on June 4th 2021 at the Philharmonie, Haarlem. French Suite no. 4 in E-flat major BWV 815 - Hantaï | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-06-16 | Bach frequently constructs melodies from small, simple elements, which he gradually expands. It often begins straightforwardly, with a little motif that could be devised by any composer, but soon becomes unmistakably Bach. 'French' Suite no. 4, performed here by Pierre Hantaï for All of Bach, is a good example of this.Bach deliberately starts the Allemande with a simple form: arpeggios that gradually shift in harmony. It is reminiscent of the first prelude in the Wohltemperirte Clavier. He does something similar in the Gavotte, where nearly the whole piece is constructed of groups of two pairs of notes that keep repeating the same movement.Although this strategy is less evident in the other sections, on closer inspection you see that Bach does use it there as well. For instance, the Courante revolves around simple groups of three notes, but Bach occasionally adds a sudden big leap to them. And the end of the Gigue further emphasises the way he constructs a piece from simple elements: one leap, the same leap repeated, and then two lots of three stepped notes. Bach - Sonata no. 5 in C major BWV 529 - Koopman | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-06-09 | With his son Wilhelm Friedemann in mind – or maybe for a prestigious publication – Bach put together six magnificent sonatas for organ in the late 1720’s. The organ was probably the instrument on which he excelled the most. In this Sonata in C major, performed here by Ton Koopman for All of Bach, he reused a short slow work from his Weimar period, now surrounded by newly composed fast outer movements, each with an equally impressive structure. Bach - Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille BWV 512 - Daniels | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-06-02 | The hymn 'Gib dich zufrieden und sei stille', performed here by Charles Daniels and Menno van Delft for All of Bach, was top of the spiritual hit parade in Bach’s day. Nowadays, his chorale 'O Haupt voll Blut und Wunden' is most famous, but at the time people sang the long poem 'Gib dich zufrieden' at least as often, to many different melodies. Bach chose two of them for the Notenbüchlein. The message is rich yet very practical: even if God seems faraway (after all, life’s no picnic), in the end he offers salvation and the day of peace will come.Recorded for the project All of Bach on May 12th 2018 at the Bartolotti House, Amsterdam. Bach - Partita no. 1 in B-flat major BWV 825 - Edwards | Netherlands Bach Society Netherlands Bach Society 2022-05-26 | This first partita in Bach’s series of six keyboard partitas appeared in print in 1726. The rest followed in subsequent years and the complete set of six was reprinted in 1731. As early as 1739, music connoisseur Lorenz Christoph Mizler wrote in a review of the repeatedly reprinted organ method or Wegweiser for “the art of playing the organ correctly” that “he who cannot move his fingers better than this will scarcely be able to learn to play the Partitas for the clavier by our famous Herr Bach of Leipzig”. This remark says something about the basic standard aimed at in this method in Mizler’s review, but also about Bach’s partitas.The Partita in B-flat major immediately lives up to that reputation of above average ‘finger movements’. It becomes apparent in the Praeludium, when the theme we hear at the beginning in the upper part then appears in the left hand with trills and all. And there is something in every movement where a mediocre or careless keyboard player might mess up the fingering. Sometimes it simply concerns a stream of fast arpeggios and leaps in both hands, as in the Corrente. In the slow Sarabande, the challenge lies more in the elegant phrasing of the ornaments and flourishes that are in full view, due to the sparing accompaniment. One small mistake is immediately noticeable.When the keyboard player then arrives at the two minuets, it appears that the worst of the danger is over, as here Bach does not demand particularly difficult struggles for the fingers. But it was not without reason that Mizler took the partitas as an example. The Gigue that closes the first partita is a tour de force of keyboard technique, which was unparalleled in Bach’s day.
