High end laptop CPUs are usually held back by the rest of the laptop - thermal, power and graphics constraints mean they never reach the same potential as their desktop counterparts. Minisforum have answered this by installing mobile CPUs onto proper ITX motherboards, with improved power delivery, integrated heatsinks and access to full-size PCI-Express graphics cards. The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D is a mobile equivalent of the 7950X3D - moreover, at $599, it's actually cheaper than the desktop version. Is it worth picking up?

AMD's answer to budget conscious gamers in 2022 was the RX 6500 XT. It offered the then-new RDNA 2 architecture, including ray tracing and great efficiency, at the crowd-pleasing price point of $199. Unfortunately, it also came with a bunch of caveats and cutbacks that turned it into a slap in the face for gamers. A lot of people were willing to overlook these slights, but I wasn't. In this video, I'm gonna reopen some old wounds.

If there's one thing all PC enthusiasts can agree on, it's that UE5 is a bit rubbish. If there's two things we can all agree on, it's that the GTX 1080 Ti is one of the best products that Nvidia have ever made, and some would even argue that it's one of the greatest GPUs of all time. In fact, I proved it was the GOAT in a perfect, flawless, unbiased group test last year.
Nvidia, however, are allergic to positive press. This year they announced plans to discontinue driver support for this and all other Pascal, Maxwell and Volta GPUs, setting them on the road to a life of error messages and janky workarounds from the PCGW. That means this might be the last video I make about the 1080 Ti in which it has full driver support.

AMD's Ryzen X3D CPUs are built with gamers in mind, delivering performance gains beyond what could otherwise be provided by adding more cores or higher clocks. The 2023 7800X3D has since been surpassed by the 9800X3D in AMD's lineup, which means there are deals to be had on the older model - and, if you were concerned that a previous gen chip might already be falling behind, trust me, it's doing fine in 2025. Perhaps a little TOO fine...

GMKTec's latest model is very much at the premium end of the market, with a 16 core (6 P-core, 10 E-core) Intel Ultra 9 285H CPU that should, on paper, be enough to drive a powerful GPU to some seriously high FPS. The EVO-T1 is one of relatively few PCs in this segment that support Oculink, giving it the ability to drive a full-fat graphics card that could help realise the mobile CPU's true gaming potential - but does that translate to real world performance?

The RTX 2060 Super is currently the cheapest card available that ticks the major boxes for playing modern games - 8GB of VRAM, hardware upscaling and (modest) hardware ray tracing. It might not give the optimal PC gaming experience at high resolutions and frame rates, but at least you shouldn't find any titles which flat out refuse to work in 2025. Ticking boxes aside, however, what does that mean in terms of actual gameplay?

Nvidia's 60 series GPUs are usually the most popular, and right now the Steam Hardware Survey puts the RTX 3060 at the top spot. Being popular doesn't mean being the best, however, and 2025's games are proving challenging even for the latest hardware. Is the 3060 keeping up?

The RX 5700 XT is no stranger to my channel: in 2023 it was a real contender for the best budget-priced gaming GPU, especially in an era where 8GB was the bare minimum for contemporary titles. AMD's integrated graphics are good enough these days that, some say, you don't even need to think about entry level graphics cards any more. However, many devices which sport these Radeon 890M GPUs can also support an external GPU, like this integrated unit featuring an 8GB Radeon RX 7600M XT. How much benefit is there from this kind of EGPU over one of the better iGPUs around, and is it worth the cost?

Intel's i9 series lasted 7 years, from its launch in mid-2017 up until its ignominious end in 2024. The series, posed as a premium tier above the previous i7 and i7 Extreme flagships, started with the i9-7900X. Despite the fanfare, the first i9 didn't appear to offer much compared to its HEDT predecessor, the i7-6950X. We might better remember its successors like the 9900K, but in this video I'm returning to where the i9s all began.

Browsing Chinese retailers can unearth all kinds of weird & wonderful finds. In this video I'm looking at one such item, a graphics card using a repurposed Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090 Mobile GPU with 16GB of VRAM. Based on plenty of existing evidence on YouTube, it's clear that potential buyers should be very wary of Frankensteined graphics cards like this, especially ones based on Geforce GPUs which require third-party drivers. I decided to test this one out, so you don't have to.

There's been a torrent of bad news surrounding Nvidia's RTX 50 series graphics cards since launch, from melting power connectors and missing ROPs, to retail shortages and blatant lies masquerading as marketing (no, this isn't "4090 performance for $549", Jensen, and you know it)
It would be easy for me to feed into the anti-hype around Blackwell and join the pile on, declaring the whole RTX 50 series pointless and telling Nvidia they should be ashamed of themselves for treating customers like this... but I'm far too tired for that. Here's a review, minus (almost) any drama.

Given the relatively small performance uplift from the RTX 50 series, as well as the updated DLSS upscaling and ray reconstruction being brought to older generations of GPU, the RTX 4070 is looking like it’s going to remain relevant in 2025. Unlike previous generations of 70-class cards, the 4070 features 12GB of VRAM - generally considered to be about the bare minimum for modern gaming. 2025 is already shaping up to be a demanding year on GPUs - should you be thinking of picking one of these up?

AMD is currently riding higher than ever in both reviews and customer opinion, and a large part of that success is thanks to their venerable AM4 socket. Ray tracing is starting to become mandatory, even if RTX and similarly HW-accelerated GPUs aren't. While games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle have started alarm bells ringing, even Black Myth Wukong and Stalker 2 are using a form of RTGI which can't be disabled - though, at least they don't require RT hardware to do so. Still, "software RT" is pretty intensive, so how do some older & cheaper cards, even ones without RT cores, actually survive?

At the time of writing, the Titan RTX is the last graphics card to bear the Titan name. Nvidia seems to have settled on the more sensibly priced* 90 series, even though they might lack the prestige of the Titan name. At $2500 USD, the Titan RTX was one of the most expensive single GPU cards ever released, and coincided with the introduction of the new RTX range, bringing real time ray tracing to the masses for the first time. Was this combination of expensive halo tier product and first generation tech a recipe for instant disappointment, and has it kept pace with the latest batch of RT-exclusives?

Intel's first stab at a mass-market graphics card series has been around for a couple of years now, it's had plenty of time to mature and for drivers to become optimised, so it's probably as good as it's ever gonna be. The second generation Battlemage has started to filter out, with the B580 already selling out or simply hard to get in some parts of the world. Can the old model A770 offer a decent alternative in the meantime?

#ryzen #miniPC #GMKtecStill G.R.E. | AMD Radeon RX 6750 GRE 10GBIceberg Tech2024-12-13 | Testing the AMD Radeon RX 6750 GRE 10GB graphics card in 12 popular and demanding games in 2024 at 1080P and 1440P, using an average gaming PC.
The various incarnations of the Navi 22 GPU have offered a decent upgrade path from the more budget-friendly 1080P cards like the RX 6600 and 6600 XT, and the China-only 6750 GRE continues that trend. Alas, AMD pulled an Nvidia and gave the same model name to two completely different spec GPUs. The 10GB version being tested here has 2304 shading units, just like the old RX 6700 (and the PS5, now that I mention it), unlike the 2560 of the 12GB version. Is it still good for 1440P in late 2024/2025, or is it worth saving up for something better?

#AMD #Radeon #scalperpandemicBattle of the Sixties | GTX 1060 6GB vs. RTX 4060Iceberg Tech2024-12-06 | Testing & comparing the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB and RTX 4060 8GB graphics cards in 10 games from their respective eras, using a reasonably priced gaming PC.
Gamers have a special place in their heart for the 60 series GPUs from Nvidia, with the GTX 1060 in particular being a long-time favourite that has spent a significant amount of time at the top of the Steam Hardware Survey. The RTX 4060 meanwhile has been reluctantly embraced by gamers, offering acceptable performance and features for its price, despite being a cut-down model from what was expected for this class of GPU. In this video, I've done my best to ascertain whether the RTX 4060 really is a downgrade, and whether we should expect more from the 60s.
#scalperpandemic #geforce #gtx1060 #rtx4060Mini PCs Need To ChangeIceberg Tech2024-11-30 | Apple's new 2024 Mac Mini promises to disrupt a whole market segment, outperforming some of the best mini PCs out there, while undercutting them at a base price of just $599. While companies like Beelink await new developments from AMD and Intel that can better compete with the M4 Apple Silicon, their best recourse in the meantime is to cut corners - and prices. The latest version of Beelink's SER 8 features an unheard of APU - the Ryzen 7 8745HS, which makes the bold (and sensible) move of omitting the AI cores of the existing 8845HS and 8945HS, against the flow of current trends. At under $500, it offers more RAM and storage than the Mac Mini, and remains within the Windows ecosystem. Is it worth your money?

#macminim4 #beelink #minipcNvidia’s Lost GPUIceberg Tech2024-11-22 | Although the Ampere lineup of GPUs found in the Geforce RTX 30 series seemed pretty complete, there was one SKU that didn’t entirely make it to the desktop lineup. The GA103 GPU was apparently supposed to be the heart of the original RTX 3080, and later rumours suggest it should have been used in the RTX 3070 Ti, and yet a graphics card utilising this 7424-shader GPU never quite made it all the way to market.
In this video, I test a full-size GA103 from a laptop-based RTX 3080 Ti Mobile that has been adapted into a desktop-compatible PCI-Express graphics card, to see what might have been.
Thanks to Alexi for providing the graphics card for this video.

Aoostar GEM 10 & Oculink)Iceberg Tech2024-11-18 | EGPU solutions have typically been aimed at wealthier consumers. Even DIY setups can be expensive, so they tend to be reserved for only high end graphics cards. The advent of cheap Oculink adapters has opened up the field, and now RX 580s and other cheap GPUs are viable ways of adding some 3D gaming horsepower to an otherwise incompatible machine.
In this video, I test out an RX 580 2304SP 8GB version and an RTX 3050 6GB with a budget mini PC, an old power supply and a cheap Oculink adapter from Amazon, and compare them to integrated graphics.
