Ink Painting KATAMARI DAMACY! Brian Ellis 2024-01-06 | Welcome back,This week I’m painting KATAMARI DAMACY! Katamari Damacy is pure genius. Translated as 'Clump Spirit’, this was a game I first played back in 2004 and it’s one of those concepts that is so simple and perfectly married with its execution that you can’t forget it. The story basically goes ‘your dad broke the stars’ and now you must roll around a sticky magic ball to collect objects, starting small (coins, paperclips) and increasing in size to collect bigger items ( buildings, mountains) until the ball is big enough to become a star.To me, it embodies the perfect mix of form + function that is the motto I’ve applied throughout my design career at LEGO and how I approach my toy designs, animations and stories. I also hate clutter… so this is the perfect game for hoarders to learn valuable life lessons ;) So this is like a giant magical vacuum ball to collect and get rid of all your extra junk.So, now 20 years later, I felt this was a perfect concept to ring in the new year with a painting!**Additionally, while looking for music similar to Katamari’s soundtrack to feature in this episode, I discovered these tracks by the artist NOBONOKO. Painting Jazz Legend CAL TJADER | TUMBAO Brian Ellis 2023-12-13 | Welcome back,This week I’m painting a tribute to one of my favorite American-Latin Jazz musicians, CAL TJADER!Tjader’s signature vibraphone sound is one that resonated with me the second I heard it, evoking beautiful, light hearted and playful melodies.If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Tjader’s catalogue, the track “TUMBAO” which accompanies this painting, is a fantastic and frenetic piece that encapsulates that which I love most about his work.Although, my favorite of his tracks is the song, “Soul Sauce”, and proves to be a perfect remedy for anything that emotionally ails you. A high recommend if you need a pick me up.From Wikipedia:“Callen Radcliffe Tjader Jr. (/ˈdʒeɪdər/ JAY-dər; July 16, 1925 – May 5, 1982) was an American Latin Jazz musician, often described as the most successful non-Latino Latin musician.[1] He explored other jazz idioms, especially small group modern jazz, even as he continued to perform music of Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America.Tjader played the vibraphone primarily, and was accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timbales, and the piano.
