The bike parking has a direct connection with Amsterdam's metro network via a underground connection, which also goes to the entrance of the Central Station. (Almost) Full registration of the first Hague Fietszwerm or Critical Mass Bike Ride. De Filmende Fietser 2023-09-21 | On Thursday, September 7, 2023, the first 'Fietszwerm' (bicycle swarm), or Critical Mass Bike Ride, took place in The Hague. At the initiative of The Hague Cycling Mayor Remco de Rijk, more than 80 cyclists cycled through the streets of the Hofstad: capital of the province of South Holland and seat of the government.On the website https://haagsefietszwerm.nl/ the Fietszwerm is described as: "The Hague's version of a critical mass. Bicycle swarms are organized in major cities all over the world. No hierarchy. No leader: no one controls the event. Everyone has their own goal. Some people do it for sustainability, others want to draw attention to the quality of life in the city and others just enjoy cycling for a while. What happens on the trail is entirely down to individuals. Everyone follows or goes as he or she wants. Some are more involved than others and hand out brochures, map out the route, guide the group or take over social media."The 'why' of the Fietszwerm is described as follows:"Most importantly: because it's fun. Cycling with a large group is fantastic. And certainly in The Hague. Our city has so many beautiful things to offer. The cycling infrastructure in our city is good compared to other countries. Our municipal policy also makes attempts to give priority to slow traffic in our busy city. But there is still so much to do. The Hague is the most dangerous cycling city in the Netherlands. The most accidents occur here per 1,000 inhabitants. South Holland is the most dangerous cycling province. Most traffic and cycling fatalities occur here. That is why we must continue to draw attention to cycling and slow traffic. And that's how we do it. In a nice way. With good manners and a generous smile. Cycling over a iconic 30-kilometre-long Dutch flood defence De Filmende Fietser 2023-07-12 | The Afsluitdijk is a Dutch flood defence, completed in 1932 after 5 years of building. It protects a large part of Dutch inland against the forces of the sea and flooding. Due to the construction of the Afsluitdijk almost 100 years ago, the Zuiderzee, an inland sea in the northern Netherlands, was split into two parts. The closed part was named IJsselmeer, the non-closed part was named Wadden Sea. Upon completion, the Afsluitdijk was fitted with shipping locks and discharge sluices on both sides: the Stevin locks on the Den Oever side in the province of North Holland and the Lorentz locks at Kornwerderzand in the province of Friesland.So much for a bit of history. Back to the present.Since 2019, there has been work on the Afsluitdijk. Work is being done on strengthening the dike and the lock complexes, increasing the capacity to discharge water and maintaining the highway that runs over the dike. And, at the initiative of the region, there will be a completely new cycling and walking path on the side of the Wadden Sea. This is in addition to the already existing cycle path on the side of the highway and the IJsselmeer.In the weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July 2023, Rijkswaterstaat, the executive organization of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, opened the Afsluitdijk to the public once. Enthusiasts could use part of the new cycling and walking path and it was once again possible for the real diehards to cycle a 300-kilometre round around the IJsselmeer.I didn't make it that far myself, but I did cycle back and forth between the lock complex at Den Oever and the lock complex at Kornwerderzand. The local chapters of the Dutch Cyclists Union were present here to draw extra attention to more openings and both had set up a stamp post. Cyclists who had their card stamped at both stamp posts received a water bottle with the following inscription:'Cycling happiness is ... cycling over the new Afsluitdijk'About the video:I start filming just before the lock complex on the Den Oever side. Work is still in progress here. Cyclists, walkers, rollerbladers have to cross road plates here and there are traffic controllers to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The new cycling and walking path along the Wadden Sea begins just after the lock complex. This has now been completed for about two-thirds of the 30 kilometres. The last set of about 10 kilometers go over the existing cycle path on the side of the highway and the IJsselmeer. I stop filming at the Afsluitdijk Wadden Center, near Kornwerderzand. On the way there I had a tailwind and I easily reached speeds of up to 30 to 35 km/h. On the way back I had a headwind (wind force 5) and I barely reached 15 km/h. That was really tough! But the wind prevented no one from enjoying this one-time opening. Rijkswaterstaat estimated afterwards that no less than 13,000 cyclists and 800 walkers crossed the dike! And it wasn't just cyclists with a racing bike and Lycra clothing. I saw people on recumbent bicycles, city bicycles, folding bicycles, e-bikes, hand-bikes, adapted bicycles, tandems. In short, all types of bicycles and cyclists!

Cycling along the Vecht river, from Utrecht to the Brooklyn Bridge in Breukelen. De Filmende Fietser 2023-05-15 | Sit back and enjoy a sunny bike ride along the Vecht river, from it's start at the Weerdsluis (sluice) in Utrecht to Breukelen, namesake of New York's City borough of Brooklyn, and home of the one and only real 'Brooklyn Bridge'!I start my ride at the the south side of the river, until the Rode Brug (Red Bridge), where I change sides and continue on the north side of the river. After leaving Utrecht I happen to run into the bicycle mayor of Utrecht (the guy waving at me at minute 10:55 in the video), who was cycling with a group of elderly people. Shortly after, I cycle through the small and very old village of Oud-Zuilen. Besides a castle (Slot Zuylen) there are two windmills which belong to the village; they can be seen briefly on the right side of the video after I have left the village and cycled past the allotments.The first houses after Oud-Zuilen were built fairly recently and belong to Maarssen, the next village along the Vecht. In the village itself I cycle on the Langegracht, with beautiful old facades and cars that are parked scary close to the quay. Residents sit in front of their homes and enjoy the beautiful weather. The drawbridge over the Vecht is still open, but I turn right so I don't have to wait. There is a short stretch where I do not cycle directly along the Vecht. Children playing in the street give me thumbs up because I adjust my speed for them.The Vecht soon comes into view again for the last stretch to Breukelen. On the way I stop twice to take pictures of the entrance gate of Nijenrode castle and the castle itself. After that it is only a short stretch before Breukelen and the famous drawbridge can be seen. By the way, unlike the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, the bridge in Breukelen isn't called Brooklyn Bridge but Vechtbrug (bridge over the river Vecht).This bike ride, of approximately 14.5 km, was recorded on Saturday, April 22, 2022.
Met de duofiets door de Stationspleinstalling De Filmende Fietser 2023-03-22 | De duofiets stelt mensen die niet meer zelfstandig kunnen of durven fietsen in staat met een Fietsmaatje toch op stap te gaan. Om dit mooie project ook in Utrecht van de grond te krijgen is Fietsburgemeester Jelle Bakker samen met een enthousiaste groep vrijwilligers (waaronder ik) aan de slag gegaan. En daar hoort natuurlijk ook een ritje met de fiets zelf bij. In dit geval zelfs met een aanhanger er aan, zodat we met z'n vieren een rondje door de stad konden fietsen. En daar hoorde natuurlijk ook een rondje door de grootste fietsenstalling ter wereld bij!

The most famous city park in the Netherlands is more than 150 years old and has been a national monument since 1996. It is located on the edge of the center and extends from the Stadhouderskade on the west side to the Amstelveenseweg, two kilometers to the east.The park is an attraction for both residents of Amsterdam and tourists. It is very busy on summer days, but there are also plenty of people in the park during a wet and cool February morning. Sports clubs, runners, people with their children, people walking their dogs or people crossing the park on their way to their destination.I started my round of about 5 kilometers at the entrance of the park on the Stadhouderskade and cycled counterclockwise.

Met elke groene golf overspoelen fietsers de kruising Vredenburg - Lange Viestraat. Ondanks de massa's gaat dat zonder oponthoud en zonder dat men elkaar in de wielen rijdt. Het geluid van deze avondspits is niet het geluid van ronkende motoren of getoeter door ongeduldie automobilisten, maar van het geratel van de fietsen, conversaties tussen fietsers en voetgangers en het getik van het voetgangersstoplicht. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Friday evening rush hour is unfolding in Utrecht. Cyclists flood the Vredenburg - Lange Viestraat intersection with every green wave. Despite the masses, this goes without delay and without getting into each other's wheels. The sound of this evening rush hour is not the sound of roaring engines or honking of impatience motorists, but of the rattling of bicycles, conversations between cyclists and pedestrians and the ticking of the pedestrian traffic light.

Met de klok mee begin ik bij de Smakkelaarshoek, vervolgens door de fietstenstalling, over de Moreelsebrug, stukje Croeselaan, Jaarbeursplein en vervolgens via de Van Sijpesteijntunnel weer terug naar de Smakkelaarshoek. Het is maar een klein rondje, maar dat kleine rondje gaat wel om het drukste en belangrijkste spoorknooppunt in Nederland en door de grootste fietsenstalling ter wereld. En, voor de vele reizigers die op dit station aankomen in het natuurlijk de entree tot de beste fietsstad van de wereld ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Cycling around Utrecht Central Station. I start clockwise at the Smakkelaarshoek, then through the bicycle parking, over the Moreelsebrug, a bit of Croeselaan, Jaarbeursplein and then back to the Smakkelaarshoek via the Van Sijpesteijn tunnel. It's only a small round, but that little round goes around the busiest and most important rail junction in the Netherlands and through the largest bicycle parking facility in the world. And, for the many travelers who arrive at this station, it is of course the entrance to the best cycling city in the world ;-)

Cycling through the Sint Anna tunnel in Antwerp. De Filmende Fietser 2022-10-11 | A ride through the Sint-Anna bicycle and pedestrian tunnel in Antwerp.Construction of the tunnel started in 1931, and the tunnel was taken into use in 1933. The tunnel is 572 meters long and 31.57 meters underground. You can enter and exit the tunnel on both sides via the authentic wooden escalators. There is also an elevator on both sides, for a maximum of 40 people.This ride, cycling from the left bank of the Schelde river to the right bank (the city center side), took a little less then 10 minutes.
One of Utrechts most famous bicycle traffic jams De Filmende Fietser 2022-10-06 | The Lange Viestraat is the scene of one of the most famous daily bicycle traffic jams in the center of Utrecht. During the busy times of the day, a row of over 25 meters forms almost continuously, in which two or three cyclists stand side by side. In the half minute that the traffic light for the cyclists is green, the traffic jam dissolves, only to re-form again between two green cycles. And so it goes on and on and on. It's like a sustainable heartbeat of the city, the only traffic jam you want to see in your city!
Improved signage in the biggest bike parking in the world De Filmende Fietser 2022-10-03 | Short movie of a ride trough the biggest bike parking in the world, beneath the trainstation in Utrecht, Netherlands. The parking openend in 2019 and offers place to 12,500 bikes. Three years after it's opening, it was clear that there was room for physical improvement and improvement in the signage, with the aim of improving clarity for it's frequent and less-frequent users, to improve traffic flow inside the parking and to improve safety for all cyclists. In the summer of 2022, Utrecht made work of this and rebuilt the entrances on both sides of the bicycle shed. Shark teeth were added to clarify the priority situation within the car park and a clearer distinction was made between the different lanes.During recent weeks, more new signage has been added. At the entrances it is now indicated which lane to choose for which floor and there are signs for merging traffic and the exits. And to make sure what kind of parking it is, they even painted bicycles on the floor ;-)These adjustments, only a few years after the opening, show that even in the best cycling city in the world there is always room for improvement and that the city council is also open to it!
Rondje fietsen om de Utrechtse singels / Cycling around the canals of Utrecht De Filmende Fietser 2022-09-26 | Niets leuker dan af en toe een rondje om de Utrechtse singels te fietsen. Zeker als de herinrichting van weer een stuk weg gereed is. In deze video is te zien dat het stuk tussen de Bartholomeusbrug en het Moreelsepark (vanaf minuut 2:30 tot 3:40) een compleet andere uitstraling heeft gekregen. Begin en eind van het rondje is bij het Ledig Erf, vlakbij het zuidelijkste punt van de singels. There is nothing more fun than cycling around the canals of Utrecht every now and then. Especially when the redevelopment of another part of the road is ready. In this video you can see that the part between the Bartholomeus Bridge and the Moreelse Park (from minute 2:30 to 3:40) has been given a completely different look. The start and end of the round is at the Ledig Erf, near the southernmost point of the canals.

's Avonds fietsen krijgt daardoor weer een heel andere dimensie. De Moreelsebrug is schitterend verlicht en leent zicht uitstekend voor een rondje fietsen! At the end of summer, the days are slowly getting shorter again. Cycling in the evening takes on a whole new dimension. The Moreelsebrug is beautifully lit and is an excellent sight for cycling!
Interview bij RTV Utrecht over Utrecht als beste fietsstad ter wereld De Filmende Fietser 2022-09-26 | In augustus 2022 werd Utrecht, net als in 2020, uitgeroepen tot beste fietsstad ter wereld. RTV Utrecht vroeg mij om een reactie, en dat kon natuurlijk niet zonder ook een paar stukken door de stad te fietsen en te filmen! In August 2022, just like in 2020, Utrecht was declared the best cycling city in the world. RTV Utrecht asked me for a response, and of course that response was combined with some cycling and filming through the city!

Lange fietstocht door polder Rijnenburg / Long bike ride through the Rijnenburg polder area. De Filmende Fietser 2022-07-08 | Lange fietstocht door Rijnenburg via de Hollandsche IJssel naar het centrum van IJsselstein. 35 minuten pure slow tv!Vanuit Utrecht fietste ik op zaterdag 25 juni langs de westrand van Nieuwegein (parallel aan de A2) richting polder Rijnenburg. Ik begin met filmen net na de onderdoorgang van de A2 op de Nedereindseweg. Daar fiets ik het veelbesproken poldergebied Rijnenburg in. Nu staan de meeste woningen in dit gebied nog langs de Nedereindseweg, maar in de toekomst ziet dit gebied er waarschijnlijk heel anders uit, wanneer de plannen voor een energielandschap en een nieuwe woonwijk van Utrecht worden gerealiseerd.Aan het eind van de Nedereindseweg sla ik linksaf en fiets ik een stuk langs de provinciale weg, de N228. Vrij vlot sla ik weer linksaf, naar de Noord IJsseldijk. Bij camperplaats Marnemoende gaat het via een fiets- en wandelbrug over de Hollandsche IJssel en vervolg ik de route over de Zuid IJsseldijk richting IJsselstein, waar ik na wat omwegen in het centrum van het stadje uitkom. Hoewel het heerlijk fietsen is door de polder deel je op de Nedereindseweg de weg met al het andere verkeer, wat daar soms wel erg hard rijdt. Langs de provinciale weg ligt, uiteraard, een apart fietspad. Maar echt ontspannen fietsen wordt het eigenlijk pas op de Zuid IJsseldijk. IJsselstein is vervolgens een hele leuke bestemming om even bij te komen, de molen te bezoeken of te winkelen in de auto- en fietsvrije winkelstraat in het centrum.---------Long bike ride through Rijnenburg, via the Hollandsche IJssel to the center of IJsselstein. 35 minutes of pure slow TV!On Saturday 25 June I cycled from Utrecht along the western edge of Nieuwegein (parallel to the A2-highway) towards the Rijnenburg polder. I start filming just after the underpass of the A2 on the Nedereindseweg. There I cycle into the much-discussed Rijnenburg polder area. Most of the homes in this area are currently located along the Nedereindseweg, but this area will probably look very different in the future when the plans for an energy landscape and a new residential area in Utrecht are realised.At the end of the Nedereindseweg I turn left and cycle a bit along the provincial road, the N228. Pretty quickly I turn left again, to the Noord IJsseldijk. At the motorhome parking Marnemoende it goes via a bicycle and walking bridge over the Hollandsche IJssel and I continue the route over the Zuid IJsseldijk towards IJsselstein, where after some detours I arrive in the center of the town.Although it is wonderful to cycle through the polder, on the Nedereindseweg you share the road with all other traffic, which sometimes drives very fast there. There is, of course, a separate bicycle path along the provincial road. But the most relaxed cycling starts on the Zuid IJsseldijk. IJsselstein is then a very nice destination to relax, visit the mill or shop in the car and bicycle-free shopping street in the center.

Dit kruispunt verwerkt enorme hoeveelheden voetgangers en fietsers, en daarnaast ook nog bussen, taxi's en bestemmingsverkeer. Elke verkeersstroom heeft z'n eigen, regelmatige cyclus die zeer efficiënt gebruikt wordt. Nearly fifteen minutes at the busiest intersection in Utrecht, during a weekday evening rush hour. This intersection handles enormous amounts of pedestrians and cyclists, as well as buses, taxis and local traffic. Each traffic flow has its own regular cycle that is used very efficiently.

In dit filmpje van 5 minuten is te zien hoe de straat door het verkeer gebruikt wordt: fietsers zijn in een ruime meerderheid, auto's en bussen passen hun snelheid en gedrag aan en zijn, zoals de bedoeling is in fietsstraten, duidelijk te gast. De gemiddelde snelheid in de straat maak het voor voetgangers veilig om op willekeurige punten over te steken.In the spring of 2022, the redevelopment of the Burgemeester Reigerstraat as a bicycle street was completed. De mooiste straat van Utrecht? / The most beautiful street in Utrecht? De Filmende Fietser 2022-05-08 | De Eligenstraat in Utrecht, een straatje van iets meer dan 100 meter gelegen tussen de Nieuwegracht en de Lange Nieuwstraat, is één van de mooiste (en misschien wel DE mooiste?) straten van Utrecht. Mooie huizen, veel groen, mooie klinkers en vooral géén geparkeerde auto's! Prachtig!The Eligenstraat in Utrecht, a street of just over 100 meters located between the Nieuwegracht and the Lange Nieuwstraat, is one of the most beautiful (and perhaps THE most beautiful?) streets in Utrecht. Beautiful houses, lots of greenery, beautiful cobblestones and above all no parked cars! Absolutely gorgeous!
Over de Weg tot de Wetenschap De Filmende Fietser 2022-05-08 | Een ritje over de Weg tot de Wetenschap, tussen stadion Galgenwaard en het Utrecht Science Park. De weg is zo ingericht dat alle weggebruikers voldoende ruimte en geen last van elkaar hebben: een wandelpad door het park, een breed fietspad voor beide richtingen, een mooie groene trambaan en, het verste weg van het langzame verkeer, een tweebaans autoweg. The road has been designed in such a way that all road users have sufficient space and are not bothered by each other: a walking path through the park, a wide cycle path for both directions, a beautiful green tram track and, furthest away from slow traffic, a two-lane motorway. Gestalde fietsen tijdens Koningsavond / Parked bicycles during Kings Day De Filmende Fietser 2022-05-08 | Tijdens Koningsavond en -dag lijkt het wel alsof Utrecht in één grote openbare fietsenstalling verandert. Voor alle stallingen staan lange rijen, dus elke beschikbare plek op straat wordt ook benut! Zou iedereen zijn of haar fiets nog hebben teruggevonden?During King's Eve and Day, it seems as if Utrecht is turning into one large public bike parking. There are long queues in front of all parking facilities, so every available space on the street is used! Would everyone have found back his or her bicycle?
Via de fietsenstalling zo de supermarkt in / Via the bike parking right into the supermarket De Filmende Fietser 2022-05-08 | Boodschappen doen op z'n Nederlands: over de rode loper met je fiets de fietsenstalling in, je fiets parkeren en zo door de schuifdeuren de supermarkt in. Het kan onder het oude postkantoor (nu o.a. bibliotheek) aan de Neude, waar de fietsenstalling en de supermarkt in de kelder met elkaar verbonden zijn. Wel zo handig!Running errands the Dutch way: over the red carpet with your bike into the bike parking, park your bike and through the sliding doors right into the supermarket. It is possible under the old post office (now a library among other things) on the Neude, where the bike parking and the supermarket in the basement are connected. Very conveniant!
Rondje fietsen over de heringerichte Nachtegaalstraat en Burgemeester Reigerstraat De Filmende Fietser 2022-04-15 | In iets meer dan een jaar tijd zijn de Nachtegaalstraat en de Burgemeester Reigerstraat aan de oostkant van Utrecht opnieuw ingericht. Beide straten zijn fietsstraat geworden met het kenmerkende rode asfalt en een snelheidslimiet van 30 km per uur. Zowel auto's, bussen als fietsers maken gebruik van de rijbaan, waarbij fietsers de hoofdgebruiker zijn. Voor voetgangers is er meer ruimte gekomen door bredere trottoirs en ook is er meer ruimte gekomen voor groen, terrassen en fietsparkeren. Door de herinrichting hebben beide straten een vriendelijker karakter gekregen en zijn ze voor zowel weggebruikers, omwonenden als winkelend publiek aantrekkelijker geworden. In just over a year, the Nachtegaalstraat and Burgemeester Reigerstraat on the east side of Utrecht have been redesigned. Both streets have become bicycle streets with the characteristic red asphalt and a speed limit of 30 km per hour. Cars, buses and cyclists use the roadway, with cyclists being the main user. Wider sidewalks have created more space for pedestrians and more space has also been created for greenery, terraces and bicycle parking. The redesign has given both streets a friendlier character and they have become more attractive for road users, local residents and shoppers.
Bruggenrondje over de Nieuwe Maas in Rotterdam / Short bridge tour over the New Maas in Rotterdam De Filmende Fietser 2022-04-07 | Hoewel Rotterdam een erg op de auto gerichte stad is, is het ook een geweldige stad om doorheen te fietsen. Niet alleen vanwege de bestaande fietsinfrastructuur, maar ook vanwege de iconische bruggen over de Nieuwe Maas en de zeer on-Hollandse skylines. Allemaal gevat in een rondje van 4 kilometer: over de Erasmusbrug van Noord naar Zuid, via de Koninginnebrug naar het Noordereiland, via de Willemsbrug weer naar Noord en via Boompjes weer terug naar de Erasmusbrug.Although Rotterdam is a very car-oriented city, it is also a great city to cycle through. Not only because of the existing cycling infrastructure, but also because of the iconic bridges over the Nieuwe Maas and the very un-Dutch skylines. All captured in a round of 4 kilometers: over the Erasmusbrug from North to South, via the Koninginnebrug to the Noordereiland, via the Willemsbrug back to North and via Boompjes back to the Erasmus Bridge.
