Nothing but Free is based not only on Dream escaping prison, it is based on everyone in any type of scenario where they have escaped something damaging. A toxic relationship, a tolling job, high school (hah jk… no I’m not), etc. I felt particularly connected to the meaning of this song when we created it due to some circumstances that I was able to finally escape and feel what it’s like to truly have freedom in your life, away from the things that were holding you back from your true potential. The song begins by explaining how silly it is when people think that they have control over you and who you want to be, when that is simply never the case, even though it may seem like it is at times. It begins as Dream talking to his past self, who, in Oblivion, was clearly ashamed of who he had become. Past Dream doesn’t know what Present Dream has had to go through, so, where is his right of speaking? (I also wrote that line as though Dream were talking to me about writing Oblivion and thinking that I knew Dream better than himself, when clearly, I guess I didn’t. Kinda a self roast.) Continuing on, there is so much that Dream has missed, however, if it weren’t for all of that pain, he wouldn’t be experiencing such a joyous and liberating feeling. Finally, he is choosing to push aside the things that have happened to him in the prison, the damage that was done, and becoming the person he wants to be (which is not a good person but hey it’s his choice). In the next verse, it goes on to talk about how we rely on flimsy people. It could be that he never should have relied on George and Sapnap. It could be that George and Sapnap should never have relied on him. But in general, humans tend to look past dangerous qualities of people and put their trust in them, only to be let down in the end and stuck in a trap that they can’t escape. Finally, it comes to the bridge, my favorite part. Of course he has been through so many painful things in that prison, physically and mentally. He can never forget that or dismiss the fact that it happened (Oblivion, which you can hear in the background of the bridge). But the great thing about life is everyone gets to choose. Dream simply chose to ignore every single lesson he could have learned. He chose to ignore that the things he went through could have formed him into a better person. And in a more vague and worldly sense, we can choose to not let the past hurt us and be a barricade to our new and better self. Now, Dream is off, returning back to the man he once was with more pride and excitement to continue his master plan, but this time, he’s nothing but free.

If you haven't, make sure to watch the Cardinal Garden animation for it on Halfy's Youtube channel! Keep reading if you'd like to read my rant on the making of this song:)
Down by the Garden grew from a very tiny idea that I came up with in the small moments of spare time while serving a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (where Halfy and I have been for the last 2 years). Originally the song was called Down by the Water, and had very vague lyrics. I wasn't sure what the song would be about, but I knew it was created for a reason and had a lot of potential. With my dinky ukulele and the few hours of free time I had on Mondays, I sent Halfy the idea, and she knew that it would become something bigger one day too.
Since being home from our missions, it has been more difficult than we suspected getting back on our feet. Hence the 5 months it took us to come out with a song. We wanted the first song we came out with to be just right. We wanted our comeback to be exactly what it needed to be. So, knowing us, we needed a story to tell. Something to keep our music alive! Halfy and I decided to focus a majority of our future projects on an original story we created called Cardinal Garden.
We knew we wanted a song to introduce Cardinal Garden. We wanted something that could shape the world, set the scene, and introduce the characters for everything else we had planned for the future. So, we got to work on Down by the Garden!
Down by the Garden, while based on the story of Cardinal Garden, is also heavily inspired by the creation of the very world that we live in.
The song starts with mysterious, low hums. The sound of space. The sound of nothing- perhaps life before this world was. The lyrics introduce an eternal realm, "bound beyond time", "gateway"s, and "new life". Curiosity and color fills the instrumental as the world is created. "Light spread through the veins of the trees". Different mystical beauties of the world are mentioned such as deserts, oceans, mountains, streams.
The people in this world are told that if they mess up- if all "burns and fades to gray", they must remember that they have been given a way to fix it. That way is down by the garden. The garden is symbolic of many things. In Cardinal Garden, the Garden represents a place of connection to another world, a new beginning, and a chance to restore what was once lost. What does the garden represent to you? It's left to your interpretation!
Well, soon these people choose to rebel. They become prideful, rebellious, and angry. All the things that the God of the world promised them are now lost because of their choices, and now they are left to "wither and decay". Angrily, the "sky", also known as the Supreme Being of this world, throws down its wrath on the people. The people, searching for riches, for temporary pleasure, "treasure" if you will, fall to their "demise". The "Thunder" tells them all that that treasure they are seeking is right before their eyes, they simply must go down by the garden.
The words begin to explain a person in this garden. Someone who is "born of the mud" and "saved for the fight". Someone who was sent for this very purpose: to save the world from its fallen state. Now, where is that person? Who are they? The song finishes by carefully explaining gates opening, a hidden grove, and a golden child sent to bring and restore new life.
If you made it to the end of that, congrats! Now you know what this song means to Halfy and I and to our story, Cardinal Garden. The beauty of music is that it's able to reach people in every corner, in every part of life. I'd love to know what this song means to you, personally, so feel free to leave a comment or reach out to me on Instagram. (The following that has been written does not support any political side, rather it is describing my understanding of what the world has gone through in the past, and will likely continue to do in the future.)
Although Vantage is a song based off of the Dream SMP, it couldn’t apply better in our modern world than right now. Unfortunately, when I think of the majority of this world… politics… The first word that comes to mind is ‘conflict’. It is a bit ironic to me, in fact, that we try to celebrate differences, but the moment someone is too different in any kind of way, we shut them down as quickly as we can. It is society that gets in the way of thriving. It is social rules. It is social cues. It is arrogance. It is everyones opinion. It is everyone's vantage.
The beginning of the verse starts with adjectives describing an individual who is filled with the light of motivation and excitement. Shameless and earnest to create a beautiful life for themselves. Driven by their own conscience, that person knows what they want and what they believe. This could be seen as anyone at the beginning of the story. Zealous and ready to get started on a peaceful world of their own. The next words proceed to throw out an idea, how everyone believes that they are in the right. 99% of the world, I’m positive, do not try to hurt other people. They simply do what they do because they believe it is the right thing. This makes them the hero in their own story, doesn’t it? But in others' eyes, the other side's actions can be seen as nothing more than a king who points their sword at their brother.
We sow the seeds of peace, not sorrow… right? Isn’t that what everyone has strived for since the dawn of time? Again, it is ironic that even though we try to create peace, it somehow creates conflict, and we end up paying for the wars and contentions we create with our own hands.
Imagine you are standing in front of the number 9. One person could see it as the number 9, while the person standing on the other side of it could see the number 6. Does that make either of them wrong? No. They are standing on the same line, they simply are standing on different parts of that line.
As the next verse continues, more adjectives are used to describe a person. However, this time, these adjectives show growth/a fallen state. Fragile and broken. ‘Human’ is the next word to describe them. We are all human, but somehow we cannot see that, because of the barricade the ‘differences’ have made between us and them. We all hurt. We all rise and fall. We all know what it’s like to laugh or to cry, or to feel ashamed or left out. We all know these things, yet we burn those we don’t agree with down at any chance we get. Why? Because we each have our own opinion, and of course, that opinion is the only right one.
The song then goes somewhat quiet, as the vocals are filled with a bit of pain, along with the violin that takes over this beautiful moment. Vocals from over 200 volunteers fill the space, each a different individual, living soul singing that this is their vantage. They’ll have theirs, you’ll have yours, and the reason for this is because none of us could ever live the exact same life, and experience the exact same trials that others have seen. If only the world was easy to fix. But for now, we all continue in our ways which are clearly correct. This is what is happening throughout the Dream SMP. This is what is happening throughout the world. We will all continue in our vantages.Other Side of the Moon || Official Lyric Video || Dream SMP Original SongWinks2022-04-17 | Other Side of the Moon is out on all streaming services!
Keep reading if you want a rant about this song from me ;D
Yes, we know that the Tommy and Tubbo lore that is spoken of in this song is a bit outdated. We actually wrote this song an entire year ago. For some reason, it never really happened. Until now.
Although we write songs based on and mostly for the Dream SMP, something we take pride in (in most of our songs *cough* oh adult, oh child *cough*) is the vagueness. Our goal is to provoke emotion and encourage the listener to connect the story or emotion we are telling of, to a scenario or a part of their own life. That’s the beauty of music, isn’t it? It expresses emotions that we are unable to, or sometimes didn’t even know we had. So if you don’t know Dream SMP, don’t be afraid to stick around.
This song is clearly about a person in your life that you love dearly. Maybe a friend. Maybe a parent, grandparent. It begins by telling the same story in the Dream SMP (as that is what this song is based on), about two friends who lived life joyfully together. They would speak of running away and living in their own world, one where nobody could get to them. A place of peace and comfort, somewhere safe and somewhere theirs. The other side of the moon.
As the song progresses, it takes into the next verse. Topic: regret. I believe a lesson in life that everyone will have to feel and learn at some point is the regretful feeling of not having spent enough time with, or shown enough kindness or love to a person who is now gone. In this case, the regret is the fact that they wasted the time on things that didn’t matter. Drama. Chaos. Perhaps if they had spent that time doing something that mattered more, they could both be flying free in their new world they one day hoped to achieve. But now, their loved one is gone.
A beautiful instrumental takes over, as the violin expresses the very emotion of remorse, pain, sadness, maybe even a bit of peace and contentment towards the end. I like to think of it as going through the 5 stages of grief. Losing someone is painful. That is a well known fact. But it’s okay to feel those feelings. They are the very type of feelings that drive us to become a better person in the end, even if it may not seem like it.
It grows quiet, and the space “now feels empty”. Some flowers, a bench, and a place of rest is where the scene is set. “I wish that I had known that goodbye was your last”… Need I say more?
The other side of the moon has somehow become the very thing that came between them now. However, as they look into the sky, they can only hope that their lost one is out there, living the way they never had the chance to in a beautiful new world somewhere far away. “Though I can’t take flight”, meaning, “though I cannot be with you, please do what we would have done. Please be free.” It grows quiet once more. “One day, I guess I’ll meet you… on the other side.”
It hurts. But at the end of the day, acceptance, hope, and assurity is all we can ask for. This song came out around Easter. This was for a reason! Whether you are religious or not, among so many cultures, Easter (and spring in general) is a time of renewal, strength, and building yourself up again from the things that have torn you down. It can also be a time to remember our loved ones, and based on your beliefs, that we may be able to see them again one glorious day.
Maybe we do write about dark topics a lot, heh. But sometimes, certain things need to be addressed, and that can help with coping. Music is a great form of therapy :) However, going back to the song, I hope this could help anyone out there feel some emotion. Some bit of a feeling that connects you to yourself even more. Embrace it, and embrace yourself and others around you. Don’t waste the precious time you have being away from those you love. Show them that you care. And for those who have passed, show them that you are becoming the person they would want you to become. Who knows? Maybe you will see them again one day, on the other side of the moon.Empty Pages [Feat. Halfy and I had written the song at about 4 am (prime time), and it was originally called ‘Do Not Read’. Time went by and we continued to tweak and add to the song, making the melody and piano official. That is, until I realized that I LITERALLY COULD NOT SING THE SONG. I had made the melody myself, so why in the world did I choose to make it so hard? (for reference, the highest note belted in the song is the same note Elsa hits in ‘Into the Unknown’ which was crazy scary to me, as I do not have a lot of experience in belting). Beats me. But my stubborn self decided “hey, I hate this song because it’s too hard but I like the melody the way it is, I’m not going to dumb it down for myself. I’m going to tuck it in a corner where I won’t find it until I can sing it.” So, that’s what we did. It sat there for about three to four months, until I realized I may be brave enough to face it again due to the improvement I had made through singing other songs (thanks Oblivion). One thing led to another, and we decided we wanted a collaborator! It took about three months for everything to match up, but finally, with a leap of faith, we asked CG5 to collaborate with us by getting our lovely audience to spam the daylights out of the poor guy. He agreed! But dang, that wasn’t the end of it. Another THREE MONTHS of drawing, singing, screaming at the microphone, fixing volumes while we were literally in Hawaii, re-recording piano, and trying to send files through Twitter passed by. But finally, it got finished, and we couldn’t be more proud:) Just remember, if you think you can’t do something, don’t give up. Improvement takes time, but it will always happen if you just practice. I’ll give you a refund if you find otherwise;D
This song takes you through a series of emotions. Questioning, unsurety, panic, frustration, manipulation, regret, and acceptance. As you listen through the first verse, you can hear that the notes begin very low, but progressively become higher and higher by a third step with each line. This represents the panic. The panic one feels as they question whether or not they can trust anyone around them. Based on past events, it’s only been shown that “deceits and shattered loving prove that loyalty is nothing”. Ranboo has experienced this, maybe or maybe not hands-on, but definitely from afar. Which side should he choose? Who is the enemy? At the end of the chorus and verse, he comes to the conclusion that relying on himself is the best way to go, since clearly, that is the only person he can truly trust, especially in this situation with being controlled and unsure of what he has done, and what he hasn’t done.
This conclusion that Ranboo has come to, however, does not stick. It continues on to the next verse, CG5 representing Dream, who begins to tell Ranboo that not only can he not trust his friends, he can’t and shouldn’t even trust himself. “Allies can’t rely on something or someone who is living a pure lie.”
As the bridge rolls in, Dream begins by calling Ranboo an eccedentesiast, which means a person who hides pain behind a smile. He then continues on to list the previous lessons that have been shown through Ranboos lore. Meanwhile, Ranboo goes on almost exactly quoting what he said during that same video. Not wanting to remember… Too many reasons… It all breaks loose as the belt mixed with my vocals and CG5’s represents a scream/shout. Finally, they both come to the conclusion that Ranboo is the one who he has “spent his life running from”, meaning Dream, who has been controlling him from afar.
Empty Pages is a song a lot of people can relate to, if listened to closely. While it was written based on the lore events of Ranboo from the Dream SMP, it can very easily apply to everyday life. Everyone experiences panic and anxiety in different forms, whether it be about something they had done, something they hadn’t done, or something they wish was different. I can personally relate very easily to the pains of this song, which is filled with regret, but at the same time, can be drawn closer to my emotions in that way. Sometimes it seems as though our mind is a book we expect to be filled with word after word, yet when it comes to expressing those tough emotions, it can seem as though there are nothing but empty pages.Blink of an Eye Instrumental || Halfy & WinksWinks2022-02-24 | It's been a while since this song was released, but here is the instrumental! Pride in myself was something I swore would never die Gaining respect means giving up a past life The illusion crafted by my arrogance Had protected me from the wrong that I couldn't admit Now I lay across the dust-ridden floor Knowing now that regrets shouldn't be ignored Left to waste, now I see how you must have felt When the world began to change, and I followed Floods of memories drown me in the abyss Ceiling fades, empty space, hanging barely from a cliff That's thousands of feet tall And now I fall Now I fall Into oblivion
Landing back at the beginning of our prime We'd build ourselves and our kingdom in the summer sun One brick at a time Now those walls are nothing but rubble and dust What was once silver lining of us has turned to rust In those days when we'd fight our demons together If we had started over, oh I wonder Would I be descending through the darkness Through the fire and the rain, and the mist? Would the air fail to catch me as I failed to catch you? Would we have fallen Fallen Into oblivion?
Alone in this empty room All I hear now is the ambience of our faded tune How fragile of me to break so easily Fear took the lead Now I'm still falling

Oblivion. The state of being forgotten.
This song explains the theorized agony of Dream as he remains alone in the prison for months at a time. Remaining by himself, it is imagined that he has had more than enough time to think, reflect, ponder, and soon regret. Being the strong independent man he was, a part of him is broken as he comes to the understanding that his pride has quite possibly been diminished, and he is finally not blind enough to see what he had done in the dark past that had been so horribly wrong as expressed in the lines, “The illusion crafted by my arrogance had protected me from the wrong that I couldn't admit.” The song continues, as Dream lays on the floor of the prison, “left to waste” because he had followed his worldly and possessive desires, rather than relying on those who mattered most to him. A part of him is soon being dragged off to some dimension, some state of mind. A state of mind that ponders upon his regrets. An abyss. The song goes on to explain that all of the sorrow feels just like falling. He feels like he is falling, in some metaphoric way, until he is completely lost into complete darkness. Still in this world of imagination, Dream finds himself in a place of the past. A place where his memories surround him closely. A sliver of joy flickers through the words as it is expressed that they, Sapnap, George, and Dream, had spent their youth together, building themselves and their kingdom “One brick at a time”. That sliver of joy does not last long, as he is only reminded of how their melodious beginning had simply ended in “rubble and dust”. The bit of hope they used to have, now gone, due to the actions of himself, turning his back upon those he used to love. Dream ponders, “if we had started over, oh, I wonder,” He continues on, questioning that if he had just stayed with them and chosen friendships over power, he may not have ended up trapped between the flickering flames of the prison. Snapping back to reality, the realization of the complete and utter loneliness of his position floods over his emotions. “How fragile of me to break so easily,” the lyrics weep, “fear took the lead, now I’m still falling.” Piano and instrumental slowly flood the empty space, representing the flood of emotions that fill his mind with regret, agony, and the desire to go back and relive the times before this turmoil. But for now, Dream is left alone, wallowing in the depths of his mind until the hopeful day where he can regain the friendships, and his own self, that had fallen deep, deep into oblivion.Wings Instrumental || Halfy & WinksWinks2021-08-20 | Winks here! One night, I came home from a friend's house and found myself feeling scared and full of too many emotions. My life would be changing soon. I would be leaving friends, family, a home, and a dog that I have way too much of an attachment to, all to become a student at a university. Everyone has a point in life where they simply must move on, and it finally occurred to me that, for me, this time was now. Sitting down at the piano with a dim lamp on at the silent hours of midnight, I decided I wanted to write something sad. Something that I could mope about and feel bad for myself while singing. It came to my attention, however, that I was completely stuck. Minutes passed by, and soon an hour. That’s when I sighed, sat down at the couch, and just began typing. Within thirty minutes, I had the lyrics all written down. They poured from my fingers faster than any song had before. Memories aren’t too hard to write about. Life isn’t too hard to write about. Nothing is too hard to write about when you truly are passionate and believe in the words. This song is from the depths of my heart, and I don’t think there will be a single time I don’t cry while singing it (seen in the part, “the show, it must go on” in the video, with the two blonde girls, one in the yellow shirt being ridiculously emotional in front of a bunch of people). Each memory mentioned in this song was an actual memory that I hold close to my heart with these five people. Picnics in the trunk of the car, humming and laughing, leaping into the snow (didn’t mention we were in swimming suits for that though), playing the ukulele by the campfire, walking through the city, car drives through the canyon, rain, waves, late night talks. Like said in the song, these are moments that “can’t ever grow old with time”.
I’ve always been one to hold on to precious things that I don’t want to let go of, like a sweet childhood past filled with innocence and joy. But now that I need to move on, I’ve come to realize that it is a bittersweet experience. As my dear cousin (Halfy) said to me, this stage of life is like a new season of a show. It’s the same story, but new characters, new events, new adventures to live through. But boy, oh boy, was I glad to have lived my first season of life with the best characters this story has ever seen. And at this point, all I can say is thank you. Thank you for all of the memories and lessons that we have been through. Thank you for making me the person that I am today. Here’s to a new life that I “hope and wish and pray” I can walk through, hand in hand, with each of you.Blink of an Eye || Official Lyric Video || Dream SMP Original SongWinks2021-08-02 | Blink of an Eye by Halfy & Winks is out on ALL streaming services! This song was quite a different experience to make, but it came as a surprise to me that we had finished it in just over one week! Animatic and everything... props to Halfy and her mad art skills ;D
The song "Blink of an Eye" was written regarding a certain theory of a situation in the Dream SMP. This situation being Technoblade and Dream being held captive in prison. The lyrics begin with the description of Technoblade leaving Phil, walking through the cold and heading towards the prison, knowing exactly what it holds for him. Before Technoblade leaves, he makes sure to give Philza his will. Many suspect that this is the plan that tells Phil just what to do in order to break him, and possibly Dream, out of the prison. The next section of the verse could be seen as Dream talking, explaining how long he has been there, all thanks to his enemies. While Dream seems a bit shaky towards the idea of actually escaping, Techno is rather confident in the plan that he must have set up. The Dream SMP has been related to playing a game of chess, especially the character Dream, which is why the first line of the chorus begins talking about playing rooks, and playing nights. There are many ways that this magnificent escape of the prison could happen, many suspect that the ender pearl status chambers leading throughout the Dream SMP could play a part. Could this be the way they escape? The chorus finishes and continues with the second verse, though a different subject takes place. Who could this "Mastermind" be? Well, frankly, there are quite a few hints throughout the verse. "A so said ghost of the past", "Hiding behind the blue..." You've got it. Wilbur has had thirteen years of waiting, and thinking, and waiting some more. The perfect amount of time to create this master plan. After all, the once dead man now owes his resurrected life to Dream himself. But he couldn't do it alone. As mentioned before, Phil has the will, or, the plan, and it is suspected that the Syndicate will participate in this break through. It is only a matter of time, however, when these two will finally be free.Wings || Official Lyric Video || Dream SMP Original SongWinks2021-06-21 | Winks here! This song is about a father who is reminiscing, wishing, and mourning. The first verse starts out with a line that is almost directly taken from Philza himself. “Things, (riches), they can be replaced. People, they can’t be replaced.” The next phrase, “Some say the life we live is the game we play, why do we play when we are in checkmate?” Is Philza practically saying, “why do we give up the things that matter when it will only end in losing the game?” The second little bit of the first verse is simply this father reminiscing on their past. Sweet things such as braids and flowers and soft songs before bed time. The verse takes a bitter turn at the end, when Philza references the fact that, as a young father, he could never have imagined them running from each other, from him, and from the family as a whole. This takes the entire song to a whole new level as the next verse begins with the line “fights, crying, we’d all disagree.” The saddest part of life is the loss of innocence and joy with aging and time. Philza explains how his very own family was practically being torn apart because they each focused on different beliefs and opinions that separated them, rather than the moments and things that brought them together. Well, life only seemed to get harder for each of them, as the next part focuses on each son in the darkest time of their lives. The first line of this next portion, “destruction, loss, and death”, represents Tommy during his exile. Lost and alone, held by the chains of his worst enemy who would soon be a factor of the result of his own (temporary) death. The next line is in reference to Technoblade, who has, ever since a child, suffered from the violent and cruel “voices in (his) head”. Notice how the main harmonies begin here, in representation. Last, but certainly not least, is the line “power turned to madness.” If there were any phrase that could describe Wilbur in his main arc in the story, it would be this. However, this is not the end of Wilbur's story. Not yet, at least, as the song continues to explain that, during Wilbur's darkest phase, he hadn’t quite made the right choice. Because of this, Wilbur ended up dying with his crave for power. “But you couldn’t quite grab…” At this portion of the song, the notes descend slowly, as if Wilbur were falling with his hand outstretched to his distant father who wanted nothing more than to save him from his own mind. “my wings,” Phil contributes, sighing, “oh, my wings.” With one of his sons gone, Phil sings in mourning that if only the others will come to him, he will take them into his wings and protect them and love them as any father longs for and desires. Sadly, this is only in his head for the time being, because his sons will not be back for him any time soon.
