This is a lamentation for the death of Margaret of Austria's favourite parrot (written by her favourite composer Pierre de la Rue) who died, left alone by his mistress, in an act of self-destruction (as the facts were interpreted by court poet Jean Lemaire des Belges in a series of poems dedicated to the event) by letting himself bite to death by one of Margaret's big mastiff dogs.
“One of the most notable early sixteenth-century pet elegies written in a court context is Jean Lemaire de Belges' "Les Épitres de I'Amant Vert", composed in 1505 and published in 1511. In these two French epistles in verse, the author adopts the voice of the recently deceased parrot of his protectress, the newly widowed Marguerite of Austria. In this epistle, Jean Lemaire de Belges attempts to comfort Marguerite, who had lost both her parrot and husband, by presenting the theme of the loss of a loved one and their state in heaven. In the first epistle the parrot Amant Vert is left alone by Marguerite, as she leaves the chateau of Pont d'Ain to meet her father in Strasbourg. The narrator/parrot then explains how, overcome by despair at his owner's abandonment, he is going to throw himself into the jaws of a dog (Marguerite's parrot was eaten by dog in 1505). He finds a mastiff, who waits for the bird to finish his poem. The epistle ends with an epitaph for Amant Vert. In "The Smile of Truth: The French Satirical Eulogy and its Antecedents", Annette Tomarken remarks that despite the use of a Petrarch love poem as a model, the work is not a parody but instead the author's sincere contribution for his patron. Marguerite was pleased by the epistle and suggested that the poet write another. In the second epistle, the parrot/narrator travels to paradise, guided by Mercury. In paradise, the parrot is greeted by 'L'Esprit Vermeil', a parrot who had been the pet of Marguerite's mother, Mary of Burgundy (1457-1482). The parrot proceeds to describe his life in the Elysian Fields, which is populated with animals from history, literature, hagiography and myth. The inhabitants include Catullus's sparrow, the geese that raised the alarm when the Gauls attacked Rome, the she-wolf that suckled Romulus and Remus, the cockerel that alerted St Peter, St Anthony's pig, St Roch's dog and St Jerome's lion, among others. The epistle ends by assuring Marguerite that her pet, like all the departed, is happy in heaven. Both epistles present serious themes of devotion, loss, and eventual contentment after death, in a light-hearted manner. Apart from Marguerite of Austria, other readers were similarly delighted. Anne of Brittany, Queen of France and ruling Duchess of Brittany, who would later become Lemaire's patron after he left Marguerite of Austria's service, adored the parrot epistle and made the effort to memorize it. The influence of Epitres de I'Amant Vert may also be seen in a portrait of another court lady: Marguerite d'Angouleme, sister of Francois I and Queen of Navarre (1492-1549). The artist Jean Clouet painted her portrait c. 1530, and depicted Marguerite d'Angouleme with a green parrot on her finger.” Kathleen Fiona Walker-Meikle in: Late Medieval Pet Keeping: Gender, Status and Emotions, 2008

graindelavoix.be facebook.com/graindelavoix instagram.com/graindelavoixROLLING STONE - Antoine Brumels Earthquake Mass in Times of Disaster - Tour 2023GRAINDELAVOIX BOOTLEGS2023-03-14 | What can art and music mean in times of disaster and crisis? Graindelavoix consulted Pieter Bruegel (1569), who began painting grisaille (stone-colored) works in the 1560s in response to political disasters and iconoclasm, and the French composer Antoine Brumel (+1512), whose 12-part Earthquake Mass was rediscovered by Orlandus Lassus in the same period. For these artists, 'resurrection' is not an uprising, revolt or revolution, but a petrifying confrontation with the rumble of a colossal tombstone, with stone dust, rubble and a black hole. On the ruins of past and present, Graindelavoix recreates Brumel's composition, anticipated by images from the short neorealist documentary “Il Culto delle Pietre” (1967) by Luigi di Gianni, an allegory of a modern world marked by inertia and superstition. Add to the color and grit of the voices the deliberate anachronism of four wind instruments (cornetto, horns, serpent), together with the interventions of legendary Portuguese avant-garde guitarist Manuel Mota, and you get an idea of Graindelavoix’s atlas of disasters.

Festival Llums d'antiga, Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi: excerpt of the program notes: "In the early 19th century, composer and music critic E.T.A. Hoffmann talked about how Beethoven’s music opens to us “the realm of the monstrous and immeasurable”. To describe more clearly how the German composer changed the way music was written, and to define this “monstrosity”, Hoffmann compared it with the works of visual artists of the late 15th century to the early 17th century, such as Bosch, Bruegel and Callot. Hoffman believed that composers of the same period were not comparable, since the music of that time was austere and balanced, in total contrast to the works of the aforementioned artists, and also to that of Beethoven. Graindelavoix throws this idea into question in a radical and resounding way with their performance of music by composers such as Guillaume de Machaut, Solage, Alexander Agricola, Antoine Brumel, Nicolas Gombert, Cipriano De Rore, Carlo Gesualdo and others. All belong to a whole host of monsters of musical art from between the late Middle Ages and the birth of Renaissance polyphony, who would have impressed the audiences of the 19th century and who will, no doubt, also impress the audiences of today...."

"Music dies at birth", Leonardo da Vinci mused, trying to demonstrate its inferiority to the eternal existence of visual works of art. Music has always been decomposition, sounding decomposition. This program is an attempt to create a dialectical resonance between two composers miles apart: Guillaume de Machaut and György Kurtág. Rather than restoring Machaut to its so-called originality, our performance explores the subjectivity of the work itself by alternating and confronting it with works by Kurtág, one of today's most important composers. What happens to a 14th-century composition of Machaut's caliber when it is set amid a few other carefully selected musical epitaphs, from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries? What is the role of the Nachleben, or afterlife? And how do the performers change their own commitment and investment in resonance with the other works? What does it mean for the listener if musical works are primarily epitaphs of their own demise? And how can this incessant “perishing” be inscribed in the performance itself, and preserved as a listening experience?

"Petite Camusette is a real Totentanz or danse macabre, reminiscent of the familiar topos of the lov- ing couple stalked by the figure of death (to nod to Albrecht Dürer’s engraving). The chanson evokes Robin and Marion, walking in the woods hand in hand and falling asleep, with Camusette or Camuse the personification of death, to whom the narrator exclaims, “A la mort m’avez mis” (“You have brought me to death”). Josquin emphasises the chanson’s dance aspect by writing triple metre figures in some parts, which we have enlarged here through instrumental accompaniment. The two middle voices are integrally canonical, while the two top voices and two bass voices engage in simulated canons. The song is a whirlpool of canons and semi-canons, floating between popular tradition and more detached sophistication."

VAN EYCK DIAGRAMS The Legacy of Gerard Van den Acker, Art Historian (2021)

On the occasion of the Van Eyck year, Björn Schmelzer and ensemble Graindelavoix created a performance with polyphony as a salute to the life and work of their faithful friend Gerard Van den Acker, whose untimely death abruptly ended a promising and sensational Van Eyck research. As a result of the current situation VAN EYCK DIAGRAMS was given new impulse as a feature film. It is not just a tribute to Van Eyck's universe and to his visionary interpreter, but also an evocation of the artist’s struggle to be heard, seen and understood. Polyphony portrait, art historical documentary, philosophical film noir or just Flemish Covid comedy? VAN EYCK DIAGRAMS is all that and much more.
Written, directed and edited by Björn Schmelzer Margarida Garcia, Co-Director With Alain Franco, Andrew Hallock, Albert Riera, Marius Peterson, Arnout Malfliet, Marlies De Munck, Bert Timmermans, Timothy Foubert, Paul Robbrecht, Babucarr Joof, Jana De Lange, Lisa Roelands, Sophie Hellemans, Peter Malfliet, Dauwe Bogaerts, Cas Ezzy, Sasha Lima, Manuel Mota, David Maranha, Margarida Garcia & Björn Schmelzer Felipe Pipi, Director of Photography Olivier Blanc, Anton Vodenitcharov & Alex Fostier, Sound Soundtrack by Graindelavoix Willem Van Vooren & Katrijn Degans, Production

Unfortuntately there was a lot of traffic around the church which contributes to the noise of this recording. Nevertheless, you get an impression of how Graindelavoix tackles the flamboyant English polyphony of the beginning of the 16th century!
