You thought getting ketchup out of a bottle was hard? Ohio State University researchers have tackled an even harder problem: getting shampoo out of a bottle. The chemicals that make soap “soapy” also make them stick to plastic, but here a microscopic coating makes the soap just roll off.

This week, the university’s Office of Student Life Willie J. Young, Sr. Off-Campus and Commuter Student Engagement department led a neighborhood safety walk in the University District. The team included Student Life staff members, Ohio State University Police Division officers, Columbus Police and others, who went block by block to provide residents with helpful safety tips and information to help secure their homes while they’re away on spring break.
The safety walks are part of Ohio State’s ongoing commitment to help keep students safe and their property secure.

Using data from the James Webb Space Telescope’s first year of interstellar observation, an international team of researchers was able to serendipitously view an exploding supernova in a faraway spiral galaxy.
Future JWST observations will continue to help scientists develop their theories about star formation and evolution, but Tucker said that further access to other types of imaging filters could help test them as well, creating more opportunities to understand wonders far beyond the edges of our own galaxy.
Working on a university campus, Verna said, is “the dream.” A research institution like Ohio State allows for a different kind of experience for artists.

Led by a team of researchers at The Ohio State University, the study published recently in the IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) 2022 describes a framework for testing and characterizing the safety of legged robots, machines that, unlike their wheeled counterparts, rely on mechanical limbs for movement. The study found that many current legged robotic models don’t always act predictably in response to real-life situations, meaning it’s hard to predict whether they’ll fail – or succeed – at any given task that requires movement.

Trees have long been known to buffer humans from the worst effects of climate change by pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Now research from The Ohio State University shows just how much forests have been bulking up on that excess carbon.
The study finds that elevated carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere have increased wood volume – or the biomass – of forests in the United States. Findings showed that elevated carbon levels consistently led to an increase of wood volume in 10 different temperate forest groups across the country. This suggests that trees are helping to shield Earth’s ecosystem from the impacts of global warming through their rapid growth.

Scientists have taken the first step to creating the next generation of wearable health monitors. Most current sensors rely on sweat, and often require huge amounts of it just to get a reading. But this study from The Ohio State University suggests that a wearable sensor may be able to monitor the body’s health by detecting the gases released from a person’s skin.
It is completely non-invasive and doesn’t require the user to do anything to get the readings. Some wearable devices, like smartwatches or fitness trackers, are already capable of measuring pulse rates or temperatures, but this team’s method would allow the technology to sense biomarkers related to metabolic disorders, like heart disease or diabetes.

Blocking an immune response-related molecule holds promise in preventing or treating severe COVID-19 symptoms, Ohio State University research in mice suggests. Scientists traced development of extensive lung damage in infected mice to heightened levels of the molecule triggered by the invading SARS-CoV-2 virus. Blocking the molecule in infected mice reduced inflammation, tissue injury and blood clots in the lungs.
Versions of this molecule, which is an enzyme, exist and have similar functions in both mice and humans – they’re called caspase 11 and caspase 4, respectively. After finding that the enzyme is an attractive therapeutic target, the researchers are exploring compounds that could safely and effectively block its activation.

The collection was curated by John Low, associate professor in comparative studies at the Newark campus. Low teaches history, American Indian studies and religious studies. He is also an enrolled member of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians.
In September, Low gifted two baskets created by artist Jenny (Brown) Chapman to the university to celebrate Ohio State’s role in expanding educational opportunities for Native students, staff and faculty. President Kristina M. Johnson accepted the baskets for the university and then invited Low to display his collection at the Columbus campus.

Drake said he appreciates the likeness that Tennison actualized on canvas. A physician and member of the National Academy of Medicine, Drake said he took special note of how the artist portrayed the definition in his hands ̶ developed through years of exacting procedures in the operating room.
Drake said he’s hopeful that students who view his portrait will be inspired that they can become whatever they choose in life.
