Today I'm going to show you how to make a snuggly soft blanket with quilting cotton on one side and minky on the other. It's Fall here in Michigan. It's starting to get chilly at night, so who doesn't need a super soft blanket to curl up in?You'll notice I have a distinct Halloween theme going on here. Of course, you can choose whatever fabrics you want. I think it'd be fun to do a Christmas themed blanket. Maybe even make a bunch of them and give them out as gifts for the holidays. Because who doesn't want more blankets?Or skip the holiday theme and just pick a pretty quilting cotton that matches your decor.If you're not familiar with minky, it's a super soft fabric that's almost like a blend between short pile fur and fleece. It's very common in baby blankets -- which, by the way, is another great use for this blanket. Baby showers!You can easily switch out the minky for fleece or chenille or sherpa fabric. Ever since I posted my original bag tutorial, people have been asking how to make one that zips. It only took me 5 years to finally show you how!But one zipper isn't enough! I also show how to add zipper pockets to the interior/exterior of the bag.CORRECTIONS:- 0:50 - "...you won't see the lining." Sorry, I misspoke. You WILL see the top trim lining on the finished bag.- 1:36 - D-ring Loop Strap measurement should be 18" x 4". (I mistakenly wrote 18" x 2".) I also neglected to note that the D-rings I'm using are 1" wide.NOTES/ADDITIONAL INFO:- If you are *not* adding the option D-ring detail, you may want to add about 6" to the strap length. That would mean that your four strap pieces should measure 26" x 2" instead of 20" x 2".- Feel free to add a layer of interfacing if you want more structure to your bag or are using a very lightweight fabric. I used a layer of fusible light-to-medium weight interfacing on the main exterior bag pieces.- If you've never made this style of bag before, you might want to check out the original tutorial first: youtu.be/1hy_fieVhu0?list=PL805D59A562139423- If you're interested in making a bag in a different size, I recommend making a paper template first- that way you can fold the gusset and get an idea of the size of the bag (and make adjustments) before you start cutting and sewing. - If you do change the dimensions, remember to get an appropriately sized zipper (at least as long as the width of the bag). How To Sew A Formal Tulle Skirt - Sewing Tutorial smarmyclothes 2013-05-17 | This is a step by step tutorial for a ruffled tulle skirt with an fun printed underlayer that "peeks" out. This skirt would be perfect for Prom or any other formal event.And while it will probably take you a few hours to make, the materials are very inexpensive. If you're on a budget, this is the skirt for you!Here was the cost of my skirt:$3.50 - 3 yards of tulle*$10.00 - 1 yard underlayer fabric*$1.50 - 1 yard elastic*$15 - total*Please note that the amount of each material required depends on your sizing. Use the directions at the beginning of the video to determine the amount of each material that you need to make the skirt in YOUR SIZE.If you want a poofier skirt, you can use more tulle. Instead of calculating 3 times your waist size, you can do 4 times, 5 times, 7 times, 10 times.... I like to call this method the Cheater Method. Because it's just too easy. You can use this method to add a ruffle, gather a puff sleeve, etc.I'm using a 2 to 1 ratio of gathering for this video, which means I'm gathering 20" of fabric down to 10". How to Sew Knits and Stretch Fabrics with a Sewing Machine smarmyclothes 2013-01-13 | This tutorial will show you how to sew stretch and knit fabrics with a regular sewing machine.People often make the mistake of thinking they can't work with knits if they don't have an overlock machine, but knit fabrics existed a long time before sergers were commonly available as home machines, so don't be afraid to try it out. With a little practice, it's no harder than sewing with woven fabrics.Stitch settings: Unfortunately, there's no universal setting for stitch length and width, so my settings would almost certainly mean nothing to you and your machine. I personally prefer a medium zig zag (5 out of 5 on my machine, it doesn't go as wide as newer machines) with a medium/normal length (3 out of 5). Some people prefer a teeny tiny zig zag. Others prefer a really long, but not wide zig zag. It's mostly about preference, though certain fabrics may benefit with different settings. I'd test some different options on a scrap of whatever you'll be sewing.
