Visitors to the exhibits will be able to learn about the work of Durham Aged Mineworkers’ Homes Association (DAMHA) and what it was like to live in an aged miner’s home in the 1950s. The space of two of the replicated homes will host sessions for older people, people living with dementia and other long-term health conditions, and their families and carers. This will build on the acclaimed work Beamish’s Health and Wellbeing Team already does at Orchard Cottage, at The 1940s Farm.
Thanks to the money raised by National Lottery players, the project was awarded a £10.9million grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2016 – a major milestone in Beamish’s history and the largest single investment ever seen at the museum.
Beamish is still fundraising for the project match funding, and there is a fundraising plan in place to guide this work.

Starting from Derwentcote Steel Furnace, it began the three mile journey to the Willey family at Broomfield Farm. Henry Willey bought the traction engine in 1921, it stayed at the farm for around 10 years – the same family still own the farm today!
In the 1930s the traction engine was sold to a Mr Whitfield of West Auckland, and by 1939, it had moved to Lincolnshire. It passed through several owners before the Bosworth family bought it in 1971. Whilst visiting Beamish, the owners felt it was the perfect opportunity for the traction engine to return back to its former home.

Listen to her chatting about her idyllic childhood farm holidays – mushroom picking and collecting eggs, gathering pails of water from a spring and enjoying hay time teas with ginger beer and granny loaf!
We are so very lucky to have these first-hand accounts of life on Spain's Field Farm, which has been saved and rebuilt here at Beamish.
Treat yourself to lunch at Middleton’s Quality Fish and Chips. Next door at John’s Café, why not choose a few tunes on the jukebox before settling into one of the original John's Café booths to sample fresh homemade ice cream.
Next you can head to No. 2 Front Street to hear the story of the Spennymoor Settlement of artists, writers and poets. The exhibit is based on the former Spennymoor home of celebrated North East artist Norman Cornish, where he lived from 1953 to 1967.
Now that you've brushed up on your knowledge of the 1950s you can stop in at Elizabeth’s Hairdresser’s to have your hair styled and make sure you look the part!

Today the Blaydon Race is known more as a road race, but originally it was a horse race, beginning in 1861 on a circular island - a mile in circumference - on the River Tyne called Blaydon Island, known locally as Dent’s Meadow.
Often described as the Geordie anthem, it’s still sung from the terraces at St James’ Park.

Maria Ebblewhite, formerly Parisella, made an emotional return to her father's café which has been recreated at the museum in our 1950s terrace. John’s Café, from Wingate in County Durham, was bought by her dad Giovanni Baptista Parisella, known locally as John, in the 1950s and Maria recently visited to see the recreated café at Beamish.
John's Café is part Front Street terrace, which will open with a week of celebrations this February Half Term (19th to 27th February 2022). The 1950s terrace also includes Middleton’s Quality Fish and Chips, Elizabeth’s Hairdresser’s and a recreation of the home of North East artist Norman Cornish.

Maria was visiting with her husband Kevin, who nominated her, and her son when she was surprised with the huge Beamish hamper worth over £200.
Maria supports various charities and this year she has raised money for Winlaton Centre, Dementia UK, Cancer Research UK, British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer's Research UK, Macmillan Cancer Support, Hill Top School, as well as so many others.
Maria has been battling breast cancer from July, but this has not stopped her. Maria and Kevin had to postpone their wedding day twice due to her ongoing cancer treatment and, when they were able to get married, Maria used their wedding reception as a Macmillan Coffee Morning to raise funds for the charity as they have supported her through treatment.
Kevin said in his nomination that Maria is so charity focused and has told all of their family and friends that when she loses most of her hair it will cost them, as she will shave it off for charity to raise funds to support cancer treatment.
He added: “We are so proud of her positivity and focus on always helping others. She is everyone's friend and is the kindest person you will ever have a pleasure to meet. Regardless of how much she herself has had to encounter this year, she has never stopped turning each negative into a positive and this is always charity or kindness related. We really feel she deserves this treat.”
From foodbank collections, raffles and anonymously-given gifts to buying toys to support church groups, inspiring others and giving treats to say thank you to those who have supported her through her own cancer treatment, Maria really is a deserving winner.
Our Random Act of Kindness competition was to spread Beamish joy this Christmas and we were overwhelmed with all the nominations, there really were so many deserving entries.
Congratulations to Maria and her family!

Road-rail vehicles with elevating work platforms carried out high-level work, with other specialist equipment, such as laser measuring, drones and test equipment, allowed a full inspection and survey to be undertaken. This will help plan any maintenance renewals or repairs for the coming years, particularly as part of the Remaking Beamish project trolleybus operation.
The visit was part of a scheme by Nexus that allows staff to do voluntary work to help the local community and not-for-profit organisations. As Beamish is a charity, the support was a huge boost for the museum whilst recovering from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

We caught up with Rosie Nichols our Keeper of Social History for an insight in to the history of Harvest Festivals.
Harvest Festival is a celebration of food grown on the land. The idea of the Harvest Festival as we know it dates back to the 1840’s when the church would be decorated with flowers and home grown produce and hymns such as “We plough the field and scatter” and “All things bright and beautiful” would be sung.
Traditional, harvest-time food and drink will be prepared and displayed at The 1940s Farm and Pockerley Old Hall. Harvest Home signified the end of the harvest. Suppers in celebration of the farming communities’ hard work took place around the region. Farm houses and barns were dressed for the supper and a Harvest Lord was often crowned – his role was to open the feast with singing, dancing and generally a good time!
