Many English words still in use today are borrowed from the Taíno language, such as iguana, hammock, cay, maize, cassava, and barbecue. Unfortunately, aside from sentences recorded in the chronicles and loanwords found in Caribbean Spanish, the Taíno language is largely lost. Recent revitalization efforts have aimed to resurrect or construct a new version of the language for modern descendants. These efforts include careful comparison with other Arawakan languages to extract surviving words and create a framework for Classical Taíno.The Taíno people had a complex social hierarchy with chiefs (kasīke) at the top and servants (aboria) at the bottom.
