#AcdaemicDiscussionQuestion #TOEFLwritingHow to improve and practice English writing skillsWrite to the Top2024-05-27 | Do you want to write better in English? Join Adam as he outlines the different steps you need to take to improve your writing skills:
1. Get the right tools: vocabulary & grammar 2. Understand the different types of writing 3. Gather content and organize your thoughts 4. Remember the reader: readability 5. Make good use of technology/resources
In this video, we look at what it means to have writing that ‘flows’, or writing that has good readability, and how to achieve this.
We discuss the following points, and then look at a sample essay with and without ‘flow’.
What is flow in writing? The reader’s ability to move smoothly through a text from beginning to end.
✨A reader should NOT: - have to stop to reread or go back to recheck something - struggle to find connections between ideas or have to fill in the blanks - have questions about your arguments/ideas - be exhausted by the effort - be bored
🏆How to achieve flow: - Clear syntax and effective sentence structures - Focused paragraphs (alignment of ideas, topic sentences, closings)—coherence - Clear & logical connections between ideas, sentences, and paragraphs—cohesion - Signifiers (transitions and linking terms, conjunctions, pronouns) - Maintain progression, avoid digression - Avoid wordiness, repetition, redundancy, the irrelevant and the obvious - Variety (words, structures, sentence lengths, approaches, tone, pace, etc.) - Plan before - Edit and rewrite after
In this video, we look at the changes made to the Writing section, specifically Task 2.
The new test does NOT have an essay component.
Instead, the new task asks for a paragraph as an online post in a discussion forum. The test taker needs to read the professor’s introduction and question, as well as the answers provided by two sample students. Then the writer needs to contribute to the discussion with a paragraph of at least 100 words. The writer has 10 minutes to complete the full task (reading and writing).
This video provides more details about the new writing test and provides some tips and strategies to follow to get a higher score.
Regardless which test you’ll end up taking to prove you can work or study in English, the one thing common to all is that they take practice and time.
Language tests aren’t all about grammar and vocabulary—they are about communication, which means making someone else clearly understand your ideas and arguments. They are also there to determine if you are ready to join a particular community or context, for example a university class or a workplace.
Treat each test like a project: a) Find as many practice tests as you can and do them in test conditions b) Discover your weakness and work to improve it c) Build your vocabulary base (this will help in all areas) d) Study sample answers e) Get help if you need it f) Give yourself enough time to prepare

In this video, I offer some general tips about academic writing.
The dos and don’ts I expand on are as follows:
Don’ts • Don’t write until you have a clear plan • Don’t use casual language (slang, colloquialisms, jargon)—use formal language • Don’t submit your first draft (on a second draft reduce word count at least 5 to 10 percent) • Don’t turn it into a personal narrative—keep it objective (avoid I, my, me) • Don’t have extra-long paragraphs
Do’s • Make sure you know the structure and style of what you’re writing (summary is not the same as a paper or book review or lab report) • Assume your reader is not an expert in the subject matter—make your ideas clear, write to a layperson • Use more verbs and in the active voice unless there is a specific reason/function for using the passive • Check your pronouns and make sure that it is always crystal clear what they refer to • Cite—using others’ ideas without crediting them is plagiarism

Add: in addition, moreover, furthermore, another, etc. Show similarity: likewise, in the same way,
There are many transition words that are useful for all kinds of writing, both in academic writing and business writing.

Now, we’ll look at grammar as a tool for controlling syntax.
What is syntax? The arrangement of words, clauses, and phrases in a sentence in a way that delivers a clear message.
In other words, we need to learn how to control sentences such that we can deliver the same message in a variety of ways to serve different purposes. For example, we can use different clauses and phrases, make different word choices and use different forms of words, make strategic use of punctuation to emphasize or add pauses, and so on.
This video is an introduction to Grammar & Syntax. It outlines the uses of syntax and the benefits of mastering it.

The idea is called ‘chunking’, which means learning words in small, related groups, or chunks, that relate to a specific topic, like shopping. By learning words in relation to one another, you have an added tool to help you remember them and apply them in many contexts.
Words should also be collected in categories. This lesson presents the six categories we will use to chunk our words.
