Whisky Whereabouts 2025-10-17 | Benrinnes is a Diageo distillery and primarily makes whisky to go into Johnnie Walker and J&B Blended Scotch. As part of Diageo's Flora & Fauna series, which showcases distilleries without single malt core ranges, this 15 Year isn't well-presented (43%, Chill Filtered, and Color Added). BUT: it has a very distinctive character for a Speyside whisky, and this release is reasonably priced (where you can get it...). Is this a hidden gem wasted on blends? Bruichladdich Organic Barley 2011 Review - Does Organic Barley From a Single Farm Make a Difference? Whisky Whereabouts 2025-10-03 | Bruichladdich is big on experimenting with specific barleys and exploring terroir in whisky. This whisky is 11 year un-peated Bruichladdich, bottled in 2022. The barley is from a specific (Mid Coul Farm) farm northeast of Inverness, and to preserve the organic status, Bruichladdich has aged it in first fill bourbon casks (so as not to have any contamination with prior fills). Bruichladdich Classic Laddie Review - $60 Entry Level NAS w/ Great Presentation v. Bruichladdich 18 Whisky Whereabouts 2025-02-07 | Bruichladdich's entry level single malt - in its distinctive teal blue bottle - is very well-presented for its reasonable $60 price tag: 50% ABV, no fake color, non chill-filtered, made from all-Scottish barley, and matured on Islay in an exotic mix of bourbon and wine casks. BUT: while a portion of the vatting was aged 8 years, the rest the vatting lacks an age statement. Campbeltown Loch Review - Blended Malt of all 5 Campbeltown Malts v. Springbank 10 v. Kilkerran 12 Whisky Whereabouts 2025-01-31 | Campbeltown Loch is a blended malt (with no grain whisky) from Springbank's parent company that is said to include whisky from all 5 malts (Springbank, Hazelburn, Longrow, Kilkerran, and Glen Scotia) from Campbeltown's 3 distilleries. No age statement, but 46%, no chill-filtration, and no fake color. It should cost between $70-$80, and is probably easier to find than most entry-level Campbeltown single malts. In this video, I review and rate the Cambpbeltown malt, and then I put it head to head in a blind tasting against its big brothers: Springbank 10 or Kilkerran 12. Lagavulin 11 Offerman Charred Oak v. Caribbean Rum - Is the Charred Oak as Good as I Remember? Whisky Whereabouts 2025-01-24 | When I reviewed last year's Lagavulin 11 Offerman Release, the Caribbean Rum: youtu.be/BoAKynDCrn4?feature=shared I liked, but didn't love it, and I didn't think it measured up to its predecessor, the Charred Oak release from 2022. I recently came across a bottle of the Charred Oak, and I had to buy it so I could compare the two head-to-head. Was I wrong when I reviewed 2024's Caribbean Rum edition? When comparing the noses of these two whiskers, I was in for a surprise ... I also compare it in this video to 2024's Diageo Special Release cask strength Lagavulin 12, the "Fireside Tales," which was aged in refill casks. If you're not familiar, Lagavulin has released a series of 4 limited, special releases branded in partnership with American actor Nick Offerman. They are all 11 Year age statement, 46% whiskers, but unfortunately, they seem to have fake color an, absent any indication from the distillery that it's not chill-filtered, it probably is. Broken Cork in $600 Bottle of 25 Year Old Scotch Whisky! The Tough Choices I Made to Save the Whisky Whisky Whereabouts 2025-01-17 | I recently reviewed a $600 (or more...) bottle of Bunnahabhain 25 Year: youtu.be/UERFPzO_fEc?feature=sharedUnfortunately, when I first opened the bottle, the cork was split, and when I tried to extract it from the neck, it crumbled into the bottle. I decided to remove the whisky from the cork-contaminated bottle because I did not want to leave the cork material in the 46% whisky to degrade and potentially affect the flavor of this expensive Islay whisky. Unfortunately, my first attempt involving mesh straining into smaller bottles didn't do the job, and I had to make a tough choice about what to do before making a second attempt. 2 Year Experiment Tasting: Untreated v. Inert Gas v. Reduced Headspace Samples Whisky Whereabouts 2025-01-03 | I have been conducting an ongoing experiment to tests the effects of different techniques for storing whisky long-term to see what approach would work best for me to best preserve the bottles in my collection. Two years ago, I reduced the volume of 2 brand new bottles of Ardbeg Ten below 50%, and then I transferred the surplus whisky into smaller, 375 ml bottles with no headspace. One of the two 1/2 filled Ardbeg bottles was treated with inert gas. The second, I left untreated. One Year ago, I shared the results on my blind tasting flight that included the three samples, tasted after 6 months and after 1 year. If you missed that video: youtu.be/sShZKVtJrgI?feature=sharedLast year, I also removed 80% of a bottle of Ardbeg Wee Beastie, to see if the lower level had an effect over time. I filled two smaller bottles with this whisky, and wrapped the neck of one with Parafilm, to test if the screw top caps of the sample bottles would have any effect. In this video, I blind taste the samples from both experiments and rank them. My results are subjective, and there have been different outcomes at different stages of this ongoing experiment. I make no guarantees about any technique or product I've used in this experiment, and "your mileage may vary." I encourage you to conduct your own experiments with your own bottles to see what works best for you.
