She's quickly becoming a favorite of mine. Both CRASH and BRAT were phenomenal albums, and I couldn't resist mashing up the brattiest track of them all: Von Dutch. At first, I paired it with Britney's 3. However, I soon learned that someone else made this banger of a mashup already, so I decided to pivot. Blur's Song 2 ended up providing some fun juxtaposition to the track, and I found another awesome Britney vocal for the chorus. I happened to hear Everything in It's Right Place in a movie recently, and was instantly obsessed. There are a lot of interesting things, musically, happening in that track, including an unusual time signature, and a perplexing key change / chord progression. Finding a vocal that would fit over this instrumentation was a challenge. But I think I found a winner in No Doubt's classic Don't Speak. This moody opener brings together Thom Yorkeβs meditative repetition and Gwenβs emotional wails, resulting in what feels like an unexpected therapy session on the dancefloor. PokΓ©mon, Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles... and now, Mortal Kombat. I particularly enjoyed Choose Your Fighter from the BARBIE soundtrack (though Speed Drive is the GOAT, no contest) and I absolutely loved how it sounded paired up with those classic Mortal Kombat beats! Then I added the Beastie Boys vocals and it really started coming together. Those three songs sort of solidified the fighting and partying theme, so it only made sense to add LMFAO, P!nk, and Kesha into the mix. The party really didn't start, until they walked in. (Side note... initially, I was going to include a DIGIMON mashup on SHOCK WAV... but I just wasn't loving how it was coming together. However, there was one specific genre that wasn't really represented yet on the album: Drum and Bass. And personally, it's not a genre I knew much about. So I did some research into classics of the genre, and came across the Origin Unknown track. (It's also worth noting that Wikipedia classifies the track as Jungle... the more you know π) Regardless, it was the perfect instrumentation for Billie and Dave's vocals. Fun fact... it was actually a happy accident that both All My Life and You Should See Me in a Crown use the lyrical phrase "one by one" - something I realized well into the mashing process lol. I had to shift the ABBA instrumental quite a bit in key, and I added a plethora of additional drums, percussion, synth bass, and other samples until I was fully happy with it. A version if it appears on MASHUP POWER HOUR 2, but the sources are switched up a bit. On MPH2, the backing track is Levitating. But when I went to make a FULL VERSION of this mashup, I realized there are other Levitating / Kryptonite mashups out there (really well done, too!) So I decided to completely start over and re-mash this track, instead using Crazy Town's Butterfly as the instrumentation, and letting Dua's vocals have their moment. I actually implemented a lot of the drum and percussion elements from the Levitating stems, and mixed them into the Crazy Town beat. This was a lot of fun to arrange, and I love how it turned out.
