The present state of the world is not the proof of philosophy’s impotence, but the proof of philosophy’s power. It is philosophy that has brought men to this state. It is only philosophy that can lead them out.”That is a controversial claim from Ayn Rand, in her essay, For the New Intellectual (pg 50).In the sense that she means this, I agree. No group of people will create a kind of world that is livable across the long range without first being committed to proper methods of thought and a proper philosophy. Today we’re looking at Ayn Rand’s understanding of the virtues of integrity and honesty. These, along with the other virtues that Rand names, tend to be missing from our society, and even from our churches, in exactly the kind of way that would, in logic, lead to the kind of situation that the world has descended into today.Ayn Rand understood integrity as being loyalty to rational principles. And she understood honesty as the rejection of unreality. So integrity means a consistency within your own thinking and choices. Honesty is matching your choices and beliefs to reality—being consistent with reality and rejecting that which contradicts reality.

This flow is rooted and has its wellspring in the thoughts of people." That is a quote from Francis A. Schaeffer, in How Should We Then Live? How should we live? That is the question to which the philosophical branch called ethics seeks to provide a robust answer.Our reading is from 2 chapters this week. We’ll start with 6 pages on the topic of values as objective (as opposed to intrinsic, and this relates to topic of why should you choose to follow a moral code in the first place, and the Is-Ought Dichotomy. Then onto chapter eight: Virtue. We look at the first two derivative virtue of the primary virtue (rationality). It is the first of six. It is independence.On the topic in chapter 7, we have another video you might also want to look at: Moral Truths, Ayn Rand, and Christianityyoutu.be/ei9vxfRB8vMThat video goes into some depth on the Is-Ought topic and the question of how man’s moral responsibilities are ultimately to be rationally justified. What we’re exploring in the reading this week has a huge bearing on our understanding of theological topics. Once again, we run into disagreements with mainstream Christian notions, especially the moral argument for the existence of God, which is often discussed by those who follow Van Til’s Presuppositionalism. “Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life and obtains favor from the Lord, but he who fails to find me injures himself; all who hate me love death.”-Proverbs 8:33-36 ESV An area where we agree with Ayn Rand is that morality is practical, and it is based on life as the standard of value.

We work to make it clear where Christians might agree with parts of Rand’s argument and disagree with other parts.We tend to agree with Rand and Peikoff’s definitions and conclusions about value (or with modified versions of those conclusions), but we reject some of the key substance of how Rand and Peikoff argue.Some of the material in this reading relies on Rand's immortal robot argument, which we find unpersuasive. We also criticize some of Peikoff’s arguments.Within a Christian philosophical context, we do not need to rely on several of the specific (seemingly inadequate) arguments found in this section. Nevertheless, much of the material is correct and useful.

Christian today, for understandable reasons, have taken an aversion to the idea that life is all about gaining wealth, life is all about gaining success. We're concerned about the false prosperity gospel. But, we must also encounter Scripture's teaching on prosperity.Genesis 13:2 tells us: Now Abram was very rich in livestock and silver and gold. 2nd Chronicles 1:11 says "God answered Solomon: Because this was in your heart, you've not asked for possessions, wealth, and honor, or the life of those who hate you--you have not even asked for a long life, but have asked for wisdom and knowledge for yourself so that you may govern my people..." then he says: I'm going to give you all those things: I'm going to give you possessions, wealth, honor, long life. So it is a good thing. It is a blessing of God. It is one blessing. It is not the only blessing. Perhaps not not the kind of blessing we should fixate on so much that we forget other things. But it is a significant good.
