(2-Disc DVD Set) The Canton, St. Paul & Pacific Railway is a 1 1/2" scale live steam railroad. The phrase "live steam" refers to any scale model that operates on steam power in the same manner as the full size prototype. "Live steam" can be stationary boilers, traction engines, boats, and, in our case, railroad locomotives.
Throughout the history of live steam railroading, scale steam locomotives have comprised the majority of locomotives being built by hobbyists; however, in more recent years, more enthusiasts are building scale models of modern diesel-electric locomotives. Unlike scale steam engines which operate exactly like their full size counterparts, these are usually gasoline or electrically powered.
Located on twelve acres of virgin forest that are protected by the Southeast Regional Land Conservancy, our railroad was built and is maintained by a handful of hard working members using mostly hand tools, picks, shovels, and steam or diesel locomotive power. The track gauge is 7 1/2" inches.
Live steam locomotives and rolling stock are generally built by individuals in their free time in their own machine shops. Equipment is transported to and from the railroad with pickup trucks, trailers, etc.
This Two Disc set includes runby's of many trains and Loco's, On-Train footage with runs of the entire Railway, and a Bonus Disc with Extra footage, behind the scenes footage, details of the Railway, plus time lapse condensed footage of operations and runs on the entire Railway!
Join us on a fun filled & informative tour of the Canton St. Paul & Pacific Railroad.

The Golden Twilight of Postwar Steam Part-5 Steam on the Norfolk & Western Railway (1959-1960) (The Films of Frank W. Schlegel)
As the 1950s wound down, a few isolated pockets of steam remained on major railroads, or steam power was in storage waiting a call to return to work – a call that did not come until additional diesels had arrived to rule out a last hurrah for steam.
On the Norfolk & Western, things were different – very different. The N&W was a major railroad, operating big-time steam over its rail lines radiating out of Roanoke. Although diesels could be seen all over the railroad, the high iron was still dominated by the throaty sound of the steam whistle and the pulsating rumble of 12 or 16 drive wheels of steam giants, sometimes double-headed, pounding the railheads.
Steam was not stilled on the N&W until May 7, 1960. Fourteen months before this happened, Frank Schlegel made the first of four or five trips to Roanoke and West Virginia to film the final year of steam operations on the U.S.’s very last large steam railroad.

STEAM FINALE ON THE NEW YORK CENTRAL’S PUTNAM AND HARLEM DIVISIONS and the NEW YORK, ONTARIO & WESTERN (The Films of Frank W. Schlegel)
Trains and ferries were the way many people traveled to New York City in the pre-expressway late 1940s. Pulsating rail lines stretched in nearly every direction from America’s largest city as rail armadas of steam, diesel, and electric trains transported thousands of commuters and other passengers to and from the city every day.
Inland from the east bank of the Hudson River, trains of the Putnam and Harlem Divisions of the New York Central Railroad brought riders from stations in nearly 50 bedroom communities into the city.
While more riders crossed the Hudson River on ferryboats from Weehawken, New Jersey, after riding trains of the West Shore Line of the NYC, our focus on the west side of the Hudson is the struggling New York, Ontario and Western Railroad – operating into the Catskills from a connection with the West Shore at Cornwall, New York.
Join us as we relive bittersweet memories of when steam power slowly yielded to diesels on these once-critical rail arteries.

The nation's railroads were stressed nearly to the limit during World War II and then emerged from the conflict to confront nearly worn-out and aging steam locomotives and a dwindling passenger business.
Despite this, it was still a heady period on the high iron. Gene Miller was in the Heartland during this era shooting 16mm movies of this tough transition initially, in and around Evansville, Indiana.
Many of our rail action scenes were shot in Evansville where the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railway made an end-to-end connection with the Louisville and Nashville at the L&N passenger depot alongside the Ohio River. The C & E I entered Evansville from the northeast, ran down the middle of Division Street, and jogged over one block to end at the depot which had run-through tracks and a stub-end terminal for Louisville & Nashville trains.
The L&N headed west, across Pigeon Creek, where its line to St. Louis split off at a wye at North Howell. The L&N's Howell Yard and bustling engine terminal were alongside the line heading south to Louisville and Nashville.

The Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad was so impoverished when Amtrak started up in May 1971 that it could not afford to turn its long distance trains over to the new national passenger system. Instead, its four long distance intrastate trains; the two "Quad Cities" to and from Moline on the main line and the "Peorian" serving the Peoria Branch, continued to roll in and out of Chicago's deteriorating LaSalle Street Station even as the terminal had its train shed roof removed and the daily trains became shorter and shorter.
These were all that remained of the once-proud Rock Island Rockets that included the Rocky Mountain Rocket to Denver and Colorado Springs, and a timetable full of other trains. Some fans still referred to the remaining trains by their earlier Rocket names.
Meanwhile Metra, the Chicago Commuter Rail Service Authority, took over responsibility for the suburban trains run over the tracks of the Rock Island and most other Chicago land railroads. Roger Koenig was there with his Super Eight sound movie camera recording the slow decline of the Quad Cities and Peorian, and the Rock Island system.

By the late 1970s, the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad was living out the last years as a step-child of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.
The C&O had purchased the South Shore in 1965 as a bridge route for its freight business. A decade later, the drain on revenues from extensive passenger operations was taking its toll on the 91 mile railway running from downtown Chicago to South Bend, Indiana.
Born shortly after the dawn of the twentieth century, the South Shore had been the sturdiest of Samuel Insull's network of Midwestern electric interurban railways and it managed to survive on that strength when all the others faded away. By 1976, the paint on the cars was chipped and frayed, and the many stations were becoming, well, a little run-down.
Despite this, the South Shore rolled on in the hands of its capable employees. Join with us as we look at the 1976-1980 era South Shore through the movie camera lens of Roger M. Koenig.

Long after the Consolidated Rail Corporation, Conrail for short, absorbed the Penn Central and six other railroads in the Northeast on April 1, 1976, many locomotives continued to ply the rails in Brunswick Green paint, or in the paint schemes of the Erie Lackawanna, Reading, Lehigh Valley, or other roads.
Even as newly painted blue Conrail locomotives appeared here and there, the old power still held sway on the high iron, often with dark flanks after the Penn Central name had been painted over and with the "CR" initials stenciled on the nose where the interlocking PC emblem had once been.
Freight equipment went thorough a similar metamorphoses, as the newer cars were slowly repainted and the older rolling stock was replaced. This, then, is a very large railroad in transition, as Emery Gulash filmed the fading Penn Central giant during the late 1970s.

The Penn Central was a railroad suspended in financial limbo when Emery Gulash shot these scenes in the mid-1970s. Bankrupt since 1970, the re-organization court had decided in May 1974 that, based on its income, the PC was not re-organizable. The future of the PC and a number of other bankrupt railroads in the Northeast was placed in the hands of a government agency, the United States Railway Association.
The middle of the decade was the worst of times for the PC. It may not have been the best of times for the trackside observers watching the Penn Central's trains in action but the urgency was there to record on film all that they could before the curtain dropped on the large fleet of Brunswick Green locomotives, even as their appearance became a little shabbier.
The rail action on the PC was definitely dynamic. Eventually, Conrail picked up the pieces -- but that is for the next program in our Penn Central series.

On three successive days, Emery shot considerable footage of the struggle through the Appalachians of these vintage trains. The photography--well what can you say...typical Gulash. With incredible composition, many in twilight add to this outstanding DVD of one of America's most beautiful railroads.
THIS WAS THE ROCK ISLAND! Train Action on the Illinois Division 1975-1980 The Films of Roger M. Koenig Volume 3
SCANNED FROM SUPER 8 MM FILM IN FULL 1080I HD
The Rock Island Line was a mighty fine line. The musical ditty aside, there was something special about the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad that set it apart from other rail carriers. Maybe it was the image of an under-dog, surrounded on all sides by larger, more powerful—and richer—railroads. Maybe it was its short, fast passenger trains—appropriately named Rockets—barreling across the Western Prairies. Maybe it was the granger railroad, quietly and effectively going about serving its customers.
Roger Koenig grew up in Brainerd on Chicagos South Side. It was the first stop at ground level on the Rock Islands Suburban Branch after leaving the main line at Gresham Junction. He often rode into the city on its trains. Roger worked for two summers as an office boy for the railroad, and built his first home in Oak Forest on the main line to Joliet. His summer home was near the Peoria Branch. No wonder the Rock Island became his favorite railroad.
This is Rogers fast-moving movie kaleidoscope of The Rock during its final six years, from 1974 until shortly before the railroad shut down forever on March 31st, 1980.

By mid 1971, nearly all the locomotives of the predecessor Pennsylvania and New York Central railroads had been repainted into somber dark, dark Brunswick green. The railroad was mired deeper and deeper in bankruptcy, as a new national rail passenger carrier, Amtrak, was starting to emerge from the shadows of the PC's paint scheme following its launching on May 1st, 1971. Emery Gulash had his movie cameras trained on the rail action. He starts with a series of scenes in America's Railroad Capital, Chicago, as Amtrak and Penn Central trains burnish the rails in and out of Union Station. The old Michigan Central depot at Detroit serves as an anchor for Emery, as he returns again and again from his travels to photograph trains at the formidable structure. Amtrak demonstrates its United Aircraft Turbo train at Niles and Kalamazoo. Toledo comes in for its share of pulsating train operations, as do Ypsilanti, Dearborn, Jackson, Chelsea, New Buffalo, Ann Arbor, Westland, and Delphi Mills, Michigan. The Akron Canton & Youngstown, or AC&Y, was a 170 mile railroad located in Ohio, and operating west out of Akron to Delphos, near the Indiana border. There it connected to the Nickel Plate. Following in the footsteps of Santa Fe Odyssey Volume 1, comes this Volume 2 edition.
Filmed in the late 70's, Emery Gulash captured the transition of the Santa Fe as it aligned itself for the 80's and 90's. This DVD takes over where Volume 1 left off. Coverage starts in Illinois and continues west to include California.
There is incredible action in the mid-west and west, all photographed on bright, crisp 16mm color film. Action at Cajon Pass and Tehachapi are typical Gulash... Incredible coverage and photo composition-there is none better!
You will see plenty of passenger trains and freights galore, as well as some of the older transitory diesel paint and color schemes.

The action on this DVD set is a result of many rail-fan trips by noted rail photographer Emery Gulash, although none of the trips were devoted exclusively to the Santa Fe railroad.
Emery captured enough 16mm color film to produce an incredible chronology of the Santa Fe covering a period of almost 30 years! From 1952 until 1980, Emery shot the Santa Fe from Chicago to the west.
This DVD set displays the Santa Fe FT freight units, the PA passenger power, and a variety of switchers and road trains. The 'Warbonnet' paint scheme and the change to the Santa Fe blue scheme is also covered in this chronology. There are a great number of incredible shots of the famous passenger fleet, interspersed with freights over a vast portion of the line.

Volume 2 takes over where Volume 1 left off, in early 1962. In this fantastic two disc set, we will see the end of individualized passenger service, and the beginnings of Amtrak.
The 'Amtrak in Transition' portion of this DVD is worth the price of this set alone!
Before Amtrak, we will see passenger trains from: Milwaukee Road, CB&Q, Santa Fe, Penn Central, Gulf, Mobile and Ohio, Grand Trunk, Great Northern, Northern Pacific (and eventually the Burlington Northern), and Illinois Central.
Of course we haven't forgotten you freight fans either. You'll see freight on most of the railroads mentioned above as well on: Chicago & North Western, Soo Line, Elgin, Joliet & Eastern, Indiana Harbor Belt, Rock Island, Chicago & Eastern Illinois. There are cameo appearances on the Chesapeake & Ohio as well as the Baltimore & Ohio.
And in between all this, we'll catch commuter action on many of these roads as well: the Chicago, South Shore and South Bend, Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee, and the Chicago Transit Authority. You'll witness the changes in motive power and equipment on many of these commuter lines.
Finally, we end our tour of Chicago in 1973. We'll continue to watch the ever changing scene in both motive power, passenger and freight, as well as the Chicago skyline.

Where else in the U.S. can one find so much railroad action but in Chicago...especially in the 1950's and 60's!

(Re-Mastered to HD) For over 25 years, noted railroad photographer Emery Gulash set about to record activities on the East Broad Top Railroad. His coverage starts in the early 1950’s and begins well before the EBT was a tourist railroad.
Only one visit to the EBT is enough to realize how special this National Historic Landmark really is. The EBT is one of the very few places in North America where one has been able to see steam powered action AND railroad history virtually untouched by time.
With bright crisp 16mm color film, Emery caught all the action from the early 50’s through two Winter Spectaculars in the 70’s. You will see freight and passenger action, double headers and even triple headers as they work their way up and down the line.
This program contains almost two hours of nonstop action!
Witness the massive articulated or Mallet type steam locomotives whooshing by at speed with 100 or more cars, blasting a column of smoke skyward along with one or two helpers on a long freight drag up a steep grade.
Exciting action across America in the 40's and early 50's in full color from photographers such as Robert Flack, Emery Gulash, Tom Strid, and Jerry Carson. With exciting STEREO sound and some music, you will be thrilled as you view action on Union Pacific, Duluth Missabe and Iron Range, and N&W.
As an added bonus we have included a few scenes of the last few runs of Norfolk & Western's 1218, and double headed action with Union Pacific's 8444...culminating in the most spectacular steam giants video ever! Hope springs eternal as the snowbanks melt every spring. There was not much hope on the Penn Central, deeply mired in a bottomless financial quagmire in the spring of 1973. Nobody knew at the time, but the then five year old railroad was at the midpoint in its bankruptcy...it had failed financially on June 21, 1970...on April 1,1976, it would be absorbed into Conrail.
Meanwhile, the railroad and its employees and officials were making the best of the situation...continuing as usual, despite adversity, to provide service across its sprawling system. Emery Gulash was track side with his movie camera's, recording the pulsating PC rail action during another difficult year.
You will see; Electrics, Amtrak trains, First generation Diesels, Passenger trains, DT&I Loco's, a Circus train, Freight trains and more! Locations include; Dearborn, South Junction Yard, Michigan, Romulus, Wayne Junction, Ann Arbor, Ohio, The Northeast Corridor and more... 63 Minutes

Beginning in the summer of 1952, Emery Gulash began capturing prolific amounts of activity on this well known railroad. Back in 1952 Emery did not realize that in a few years the railroad would merge with the New York Central and be called the Penn Central. This DVD covers the time frame from 1952 to 1969.
Follow Emery and his 16mm Bolex cameras as he records in beautiful color the end of steam and the transition to first generation diesels. You'll see Decapods, Baldwin Centipedes, and Sharks, 'F' units, early Geeps, GG-1's, Alco RS-3's, just to name a few.
Locations covered are: Tunnel Hill, Horseshoe Curve, Holidaysburg, Altoona, Fort Wayne, Wallbridge Yard, The 'Corridor' as well as many other 'hot spots'. You'll witness many of the Pennsy's name trains such as The Duquesne, The Pennsylvania Limited, The Broadway Limited...And we haven't forgotton you freight and electric fans either.

This two disc set is a continuation of NYC Volume-1 starting in the summer of 1963. The transition to the Cigar Band Herald is quite evident. New jumbo Hi-Cube cars appear (for the auto industry) as well as piggyback service with highway trailers on flat cars.
You'll see action on the Toledo Division, the Electric Division, between New York's Grand Central Station and Harman, as well as other locations. Also covered are the RDC Jet Trials, where jet aircraft engines are mounted on an RDC car!
Mixed in with all this action is the continuing regular freight and passenger fleets, mile long trains of new auto loadings, as well as new second generation motive power.
We finally arrive at the Penn-Central merger. We'll see a few early views of merged power equipment, not yet revealing the demise of the mighty water level route. From the Camera of Emery Gulash

TrainTown Toronto (16mm Color Film From The Camera of Emery Gulash)
Travel along with us on a long-ago weekend adventure for Emery Gulash and his good friend Walt Sardinha.
The two friends came early and stayed late for a day, or maybe a few days, on the sunny side of the tracks of the Toronto Terminals Railway in the early 1970s, recording the passage of a wide spectrum of passenger trains, switching moves, and some freight traffic into and near the vibrant Beaux-Arts Toronto Union Station, opened in 1927.
This was the era before Via Rail Canada took over long-distance passenger operations in 1978. A non-stop parade of trains of the Canadian Pacific, Canadian National, Government of Ontario Transit -- GO Transit for short, and Ontario Northland are seemingly everywhere in these historic rail action scenes.

The Central was the main line that ran within fifty feet of Emery's bedroom when he was a child. It didn't matter that it was the outermost track of a casually used switch yard, it was still a main line to him.
During Emery's developing years, when he could afford a camera and film money, he moved to Dearborn, Michigan. Now he was in the big time--on a real main line! The Michigan Central ran through Dearborn, but in most circles it was known as The New York Central System.
Most of this Odyssey is from film generated in Detroit and the adjacent vicinity. Next Emery's interest trickled down to Ohio, predominately Toledo, which is on the Central's MAIN main line.
After Toledo, Emery encountered locations in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. These outlying encounters were usually in conjunction with other railfan destinations. So sit back and enjoy the Central as Emery saw it.

Detroit has a long history as a vibrant railroad city. Nearly a half-century ago, when Emery Gulash shot these action scenes of passenger trains in and around Motor City, more than a half dozen major railroads served the area, most with their own distinctive passenger service, often with cars from different railroads in the same colorful train.
Today all of them are fallen flags, absorbed or merged into larger companies during the non-stop mergers of the 1960s and 1970s. Go back with us to that era for a real blast from railroading's past. It was the Last Hurrah before the homogenization of passenger service nationwide by Amtrak.

Dennis Jenko left the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad in 1988, after 20 years as a locomotive engineer. His post-railroad plan was to find a place in commercial photography, and one of the possibilities was producing train videos. In 1990 Dennis purchased a professional S-VHS camcorder and began to capture all his favorite railroads before they were gone. Shooting CNW was always special because he would see old friends too.
This program is dedicated to all my fellow employees of the Chicago, Illinois, and Wisconsin divisions working in, or working out of Proviso yard, the Northwestern's largest. CNW pride and professionalism kept things moving even in the worst of conditions.
Shot from 1990 to 1995 (including the 1993 flood detours) all motive power of the era is represented from SD-40-2’s with their distinctive nose bells up to the new C40-8’s.
Fast paced mainline action from locations such as Proviso, Bryn Mawr, Des Plaines, Arlington Heights, Rochelle, Dekalb, Elburn, La fox, Geneva, West Chicago, Wheaton, Lombard, and Elmhurst. Enjoy this tribute to the CNW from one of its own. Highball Northwestern!
